Chapter 90: Chapter 90 - Mage , Wolf And The Girl ( Part 2)
The entire Eldoria Sanctum shook.
The ancient bells buried somewhere in the ruins began ringing for the first time after more than two thousand years.
The blue mana flowed through a multitude of inscriptions carved in the walls.
The rays of mana spread through the corridors in wide streams.
The dust began falling from the ceiling.
The stone pillars were shaking.
The very air seemed to carry some ancient mana.
Jennie put one hand on the hilt of her Excalibur.
Snow lowered himself, his ears perked up.
Roxy nervously swallowed.
"...I don’t think..."
"...that button was supposed to do that."
Jennie looked at her.
"No."
"I don’t think it was."
There was a deep roar under their feet.
The floor cracked.
An enormous stone platform slowly rose from the center of the room.
First...
There were two blue lights in the dark.
And then...
There appeared two giant hands holding on to the edges of the platform.
And then the golem slowly got up on its feet.
Its every move echoed like thunder.
And when it stood on all fours...
Even Snow was compelled to look up.
The height of the guardian was almost twenty meters.
The golem was made of a hard white stone.
Thousands of glowing inscriptions were spread over its body.
The ancient gears were slowly turning in the shoulders of the golem.
In the center of its chest...
There was a glowing blue mana crystal beating like a heart.
Every beat of the crystal was spreading mana in the room.
Roxy’s face paled.
"I..."
"I know this one..."
Jennie glanced at her.
"You do?"
Roxy nodded frantically.
"The Ancient Guardian Golem."
"That is an autonomous weapon created for protecting Eldoria Sanctum."
She gulped.
"S-Class."
Silence.
And then she screamed.
"WHY IS THAT S-CLASS GOLEM STILL WORKING AFTER TWO THOUSAND YEARS?!"
The golem slowly raised one enormous arm.
Its eyes focused on three trespassers.
The mechanical voice reverberated in the chamber.
"Unauthorized entry confirmed."
"Initiating elimination."
Its giant fist was falling down like a mountain.
"RUN!"
Roxy shouted.
The three scattered just in time to avoid being smashed into the stone floor.
The hit shattered the floor into pieces.
Roxy quickly regained her balance.
"I can help!"
She raised her staff.
"Grand Frost Spear!"
A circle of ice appeared in front of her.
Three huge spears went flying toward the guardian.
All of them missed.
They hit the opposite wall.
BOOM!
The chunks of stones began raining from the ceiling.
Jennie glanced to the side.
"...You missed."
"I noticed!"
Roxy shouted.
She hastily cast another spell.
"Lightning Chain!"
But this time...
The lightning took a strange turn.
Instead of hitting the golem...
It struck Jennie’s shoulder.
Jennie calmly wiped a little frost and smoke off her sleeve.
"...Please aim elsewhere."
Roxy’s face turned bright red.
"I’M SORRY!"
She hastily started running away from the angry golem.
"I’M HELPING VERY BADLY!"
Snow sighed.
"...She possesses a remarkable confidence."
Jennie smiled helplessly.
"And remarkable accuracy."
Snow looked at the shattered wall.
"...Against the architecture."
Even Jennie laughed.
The golem attacked once again.
But this time...
Jennie moved towards the golem.
She didn’t draw her Excalibur.
She just watched.
The golem punched.
Jennie moved only by one step.
The huge fist passed beside her.
And she continued watching.
The silver eyes of Jennie carefully analyzed the inscriptions on the body of the giant.
Every rune.
Every movement.
Every connection.
"Interesting..."
The runes on the shoulder lit first.
And then the elbow.
And then the wrist.
Jennie’s eyes narrowed.
"They’re not decorations."
"They are the control circuits."
Excalibur whispered.
"You have noticed it."
Jennie nodded lightly.
"Each group is controlling one joint."
"There is no need to destroy the whole body."
"All I need to do is disrupt the connection."
Snow smiled.
"She solved the puzzle."
Roxy blinked.
"...Puzzle?"
The golem tried swinging its enormous arm.
But Jennie finally drew her sword.
One precise slash.
Not at the arm.
At one glowing rune beneath its shoulder.
The rune shattered.
And the whole left arm suddenly stopped moving.
The golem was staring at its arm.
It couldn’t move.
Roxy’s mouth slowly opened.
"...What?"
Jennie calmly returned to the position of the guard.
"One."
The golem immediately tried attacking with its other arm.
Jennie easily avoided the enormous punch.
She moved to the side of the left knee of the golem.
One more precise slash.
One more rune split apart.
The whole left leg suddenly became immobile.
The giant staggered.
The ground shook from the hit of the knee of the golem on the floor.
"Two."
Snow silently watched.
His tail lightly waggled.
The golem adapted.
The blue mana began flowing in other inscriptions.
Its other arms were becoming brighter.
The ancient battle calculations were changing.
The golem concentrated all of its power into one blow.
Its fist descended straight at Jennie.
Roxy screamed.
"LOOK OUT!"
But Jennie didn’t move.
Until the last heartbeat.
She moved one step to the side.
And her blade barely grazed the glowing inscription near the wrist of the golem.
But this little change of the direction was enough.
The direction of the fist of the golem changed.
BOOOOM!
The golem punched its own damaged shoulder.
Dozens of control runes were destroyed.
And its other arm now hung uselessly.
Jennie quietly smiled.
"Three."
Roxy stood stock-still.
"She..."
"...is using its own power against it."
Snow nodded.
"Elegance."
The golem let out a loud mechanical roar.
The mana crystal in its chest lit brighter than ever.
Mana flooded in the rest of the inscriptions.
The whole ruin was trembling.
Roxy backed away.
"It is overloading its core!"
Jennie looked at the glowing blue crystal.
And this time...
She quietly returned her sword in its scabbard.
Roxy looked puzzled.
"...Why are you putting away your sword?"
Jennie smiled.
"Because..."
"I only need one draw."
She lightly turned to Roxy.
Their eyes met for the first time during the fight.
Roxy realized something.
She didn’t know the name of this mysterious swordswoman.
Jennie gave a gentle smile.
"People call me Raven."
She laid one hand on her sword.
"But..."
"You may call me Jennie."
Before Roxy could react...
Jennie disappeared.
No explosion.
No burst of mana.
Just...
Gone.
The world seemed to stop.
For one brief moment...
Only a silver line crossed the battlefield.
The golem didn’t see her.
Neither did Roxy.
Jennie appeared right behind the colossal guardian.
Her sword smoothly went back in its scabbard. freewebnøvel.com
And there was a thin line going across the glowing mana core.
Silence.
And then...
The crystal split in half.
All inscriptions on the body of the golem lost light at once.
The blue light dimmed.
And the enormous guardian remained standing for one moment.
Then...
It crashed on the floor in thousands of stone shards.
The impact echoed in the Eldoria Sanctum and faded into silence.
The dust settled.
The fight was over.
Silence after the guardian fell seemed surreal.
Scattered pieces of the golem remained in the chamber – like pieces of some dead giant.
For several minutes...
No one said anything.
All that could be heard was a faint hum of mana leaving the chamber of Eldoria Sanctum.
Afterwards, the glows on the walls, inscribed with the symbols of enchantments, started to fade one by one.
Mana crystals resumed their glow in the usual blue color.
The city understood that its guardian had done his last duty.
Roxy walked towards the remains of the golem.
In her eyes shone not the slightest trace of fear but only amazement.
She carefully kneeled near one of the pieces.
"So this..."
"...was an Eldorian Guardian."
She delicately wiped the centuries-old dust from one of the inscriptions.
"It has been living for more than two thousand years..."
"And yet its enchantments are so beautiful."
Jennie approached them quietly.
"You admire it."
Roxy nodded without turning away.
"Sure."
"People always believe that mages are interested only in powerful enchantments."
She smiled.
"But these ruins..."
"They show that magic wasn’t created for wars."
She pointed at the glowing runes.
"Somebody spent his whole life working on these enchantments."
"In order for strangers like us..."
"...to see their work in thousands of years."
Jennie silently looked around the chamber.
Self-healing walls of the sanctum had already started repairing the cracks made during the battle.
Little bits of stone floated through the air, finding their own place in the structure under the influence of old magic.
She simply couldn’t help smiling.
"They really managed to create something which will live longer than them."
Snow silently observed the ancient city.
"The citizens of Eldoria knew one thing many kingdoms forget."
Jennie looked at him.
And Snow added:
"Strength fades."
"Wealth vanishes."
"Even heroes turn into legends."
"But knowledge..."
"If preserved..."
"...is the thing which will guide future generations who haven’t ever seen its authors."
Jennie looked down.
Those words made her recall the kingdom she had left behind.
Nobody remembers her there.
However...
The kindness Arthur taught her.
The warmth Elena gave her.
The courage Lilia inspired her.
They remain.
Maybe...
People can be forgotten.
But the things which they left can change the world.
Roxy suddenly exclaimed.
"Oh!"
"I completely forgot!"
Jennie blinked.
"What happened?"
Roxy ran over to the stone pedestal and took a dusty crystal tablet.
"This is what I came for!"
She embraced it.
"My research!"
Afterwards, she turned to Jennie with sparkling eyes.
"Miss Jennie..."
"No..."
"Miss Raven..."
"I learned so much from your fighting during the five minutes..."
"...that I haven’t learned while studying the books for five years."
Jennie awkwardly smiled.
"I think you’re exaggerating."
It is!
Roxy said resolutely.
"Books teach theories."
"You taught me how to think."
Jennie just didn’t know what to say.
She just smiled and scratched her cheek.
Praises had always embarrassed her much more than fights.
Snow noted it and laughed silently.
"Some things never change."
Snow looked at the shattered golem.
"...Elegant."
Roxy stood frozen.
Her emerald eyes shined brightly.
"...Amazing..."
She immediately threw her backpack to the floor.
The books scattered.
She pulled out a notebook.
And then another one.
And then three more.
And she started writing.
"Impossible footwork..."
"Minimal movement..."
"Perfect runes analysis..."
"She is redirecting the momentum..."
"Single-draw finishing technique..."
In several minutes...
She already filled three whole pages.
Jennie quietly looked at Snow.
Snow understood at once.
Without uttering a sound...
The two slowly moved to the exit.
Neither of them wanted to disturb Roxy’s writing.
A few minutes later...
Roxy proudly completed her notes.
Her lips curved in a smile.
"I’ve done it!"
She raised her gaze.
There was silence.
"...Huh?"
The place was deserted.
Roxy blinked twice.
"...Where has she gone?"
Somewhere far away through the old halls Jennie and Snow went on with their travel.
And Jennie...
It wouldn’t be the last time she would see the driven young mage again.
