Chapter 10: Chapter 10 - The Royal Wedding (Part 4)

The royal garden was unusually quiet.

The grand wedding ceremony was due tomorrow, and therefore the palace was buzzing with servants who were busy with their preparations.

Rows of white roses grew along the marble walkways.

Crystal fountains glittered in the sunlight.

Musicians were rehearsing elegant tunes from a distant pavilion.

Jennie walked about in the garden by herself.

Well, at least...

She thought she was alone.

"Mother and Father are busy with noble guests."

"Lucas is probably eating himself silly with palace desserts."

"So I am left..."

She glanced around her.

"Free."

Rare luxury.

She took a deep breath of fresh air and smiled faintly.

Being Jennie Queens wasn’t that bad.

Peaceful.

Comfortable.

And wonderful freedom from royal paperwork.

"...So you’re the girl."

A confident voice disrupted her thoughts.

Jennie turned around.

A little girl of six years old stood on top of a small stone bridge.

Golden hair flowed to her waist.

Sapphire-blue eyes sparkled confidently.

She was wearing a white royal dress embroidered with silver lilies.

Jennie recognized her at once.

Princess Lilia KingHeart.

The second princess of the kingdom.

The princess crossed her arms.

"So."

"You’re Jennie."

Jennie made a curtsy.

"Your Highness."

Lilia blinked.

"...That’s all?"

Jennie tilted her head.

"Pardon?"

"I expected some reaction from you."

Jennie smiled politely.

"I know you."

"..."

Lilia frowned.

"Why doesn’t she react?"

Generally...

When kids met a princess, they either became scared to death or too excited.

But Jennie didn’t do anything of this sort.

She just stood there.

Calmly.

Like talking with royalty was absolutely normal thing to do.

Which...

For Leonis KingHeart...

Was true.

Lilia puffed out her cheeks.

"Hmph."

"I heard you embarrassed Cedric Ashbourne yesterday."

Jennie nodded.

"He embarrassed himself."

Lilia’s eyes widened.

Then she burst into loud laughter.

"Hahaha!"

"I like this answer!"

Jennie smiled gently.

"Energetic kid."

Lilia walked closer, standing face-to-face with her.

"I challenge you."

Jennie blinked.

"To what?"

"A race."

"No."

"A game."

"No."

"A duel!"

Jennie sighed mentally.

"Why do all children in this palace want to duel with me?"

Aloud, she said politely.

"Your Highness, I don’t think it’s a good idea."

Lilia frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because I would like to enjoy the flowers."

"...Flowers are boring."

"I disagree."

"They are peaceful."

Lilia groaned dramatically.

"You are only four!"

"You sound like an old grandma!"

Jennie almost coughed.

"Grandma?"

"I was a king, thank you very much."

Her polite smile didn’t change.

"My apologies."

"I will try to be less grandmotherly."

Lilia narrowed her eyes.

"...Are you laughing at me?"

Jennie’s expression remained innocent.

"I would never."

Inside her mind...

"Perhaps just a little."

Lilia stamped her foot.

"You are definitely!"

Jennie smiled.

"No."

"Yes!"

"No."

"YES!"

"No."

Princess Lilia blushed brightly.

She clutched both fists.

"She is doing it on purpose!"

"I want to throw her into the fountain!"

"No..."

"Father said princesses should behave with dignity."

She took a deep breath.

Silent counted.

One...

Two...

Three...

Then she forced a smile on her face.

"I... am... calm."

Jennie nodded approvingly.

"Very good."

Lilia almost exploded.

"She is praising me like an adult!"

"She is only four!"

"Why does she seem older than Father?"

Jennie watched as princess tried to remain calm.

"She has spirit."

"With proper upbringing..."

"She can become an excellent ruler someday."

Before the discussion continued, a palace maid ran to them.

"Your Highness!"

"The Queen is looking for you."

Lilia sighed dramatically.

"I have to go."

She pointed at Jennie.

"We aren’t finished!"

Jennie made a graceful bow.

"I will wait for our next conversation."

Lilia walked away.

Halfway along the path...

She turned around.

Jennie calmly looked at flowers as though nothing happened.

"Hmph!"

The princess stomped away again.

Jennie chuckled quietly.

"Interesting kid."

The next morning...

The Royal Palace woke up before sunrise.

Golden banners with lion emblem of Seraiya proudly waved in the wind.

Thousands of guests gathered inside the Grand Cathedral.

Kings.

Queens.

Dukes.

Marquises.

Counts.

Envoys from distant kingdoms.

The wedding of the Crown Princess was an event that all the continent waited for.

Jennie stood beside her family in a magnificent hall.

Sunlight streamed through the colorful stained glass windows, painting the marble floor in bright blue, red and golden colors.

Fresh white lilies decorated each pillar.

Roses’ fragrance hung in the air.

The musicians started playing the slow and elegant tune.

The big doors opened.

Princess Eleanor entered first.

She was wearing gorgeous white wedding gown embroidered with golden threads.

Delicate crown rested on her silver hair.

The whole cathedral became silent.

Even Jennie couldn’t help but admire the sight.

"Beautiful."

On the other side of the hall, the Crown Prince Victor of Kingdom of Tricus was waiting.

Wearing his formal royal clothes, he was standing proudly with a friendly smile.

King Aldric was escorting his oldest daughter along the long aisle.

Though he smiled...

Jennie noticed that tears glittered in his eyes.

"A father..."

"Will always be a father."

Once the princess got to the altar, the ceremony started.

The vows were exchanged.

The promises made.

Two royal families united into one by marriage.

As the High Priest declared them husband and wife...

The whole cathedral broke into thunderous applause.

Outside, hundreds of white doves flew up into the sky.

Church bells rung throughout the capital.

Fireworks lit up the sky with amazing colors.

All over the city, people were celebrating.

Markets were overflowing with laughter.

Children were dancing in the streets.

Musicians played till the late evening.

For one day...

All the Kingdom of Seraiya forgot about politics, statuses and wars.

There was only celebration.

Standing quietly beside her family, Jennie looked at the happy couple.

Faint smile appeared on her lips.

"May your future..."

"Be more peaceful than mine once was."

Nobody realized that...

This peace will last only several days more.
