Chapter 1909: Chapter 973: Life Is Like a Play (Part 2)

This matter didn’t bother Lady Zhang herself. She just felt aggrieved for Wu Lang and couldn’t be at ease without expressing it. She was standing up for Wu Lang.

"Mom, let it go. I never expected much from her anyway." Seeing Lady Zhang getting increasingly angry, Wu Lang hurriedly comforted her, "As long as she doesn’t stir up trouble, it’s already good enough." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

In this matter, even for the sake of family harmony and sweeping things under the rug, Lian Shouxin couldn’t find any excuse to defend Lady Zhou.

"Old lady, she’s just that kind of person in this lifetime. Let’s... let’s just forget about it. We don’t lack anything, nor does Wu Lang. We don’t lack... her piece... of thoughtfulness." Lian Shouxin racked his brains but couldn’t find the right words to say.

In truth, it wasn’t that Lian Shouxin was the most foolish, but that Lady Zhou acted too harshly and unreasonably. And since Lian Shouxin was reluctant to speak harshly, he naturally couldn’t find suitable words.

"Dad, speaking of which, when my brother gets married and brings his wife home for the New Year, should they still go over there to pay respects to the old lady?" Lian Manman asked. Since Lady Zhou didn’t adhere to the duties and affections of being an elder, or treat them as her younger relatives, should they still observe the duties and affections of the younger generation and continue to respect Lady Zhou as an elder?

The whole family looked at Lian Shouxin.

"Sigh..." Lian Shouxin let out a long sigh. There was no need to mention himself and Lady Zhang, since their children had always been endlessly indulgent and tolerant towards Lady Zhou under his influence. But Wu Lang’s future bride wasn’t raised in this household. Would the young lady understand such a strange phenomenon, and would she willingly endure it?

Lian Shouxin was worried.

Meanwhile, at the old residence of the Lian Family in the village, after sending off Lian Shouxin’s family, Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, and Lady Chiang had all returned indoors. Lady Zhou sat alone on the kang, her face expressionless.

"Grandmother, should I tidy up these things?" Lady Chiang cautiously asked Lady Zhou for instructions.

Even for such small matters, Lady Chiang would always seek Lady Zhou’s consent before taking action. Lady Zhou had an extremely strong desire to control domestic affairs, and Lady Chiang, knowing Lady Zhou’s temperament, was always very careful. Thanks to her meticulousness, even someone as picky as Lady Zhou found it difficult to find fault with Lady Chiang.

"Tidy up." Lady Zhou finally showed some expression on her face, "Leave some peanuts and dates for Yaya and Niuniu to eat."

"Alright." Lady Chiang agreed and brought over an empty dish, then moved the plates of dates and roasted peanuts to Lady Zhou’s side. Lady Zhou grabbed some from each plate and placed them on the empty dish, handing it to Lian Yaya and Da Niuniu.

"Eat well, both of you." Lady Zhou said, her face always softened noticeably when she looked at Lian Yaya and Da Niuniu, especially Lian Yaya.

Lian Yaya and Da Niuniu both smiled and called her grandmother, taking the dish but setting it aside instead of eating right away. The aunt and niece helped Lady Chiang tidy up the plates and clean the kang and floor.

Lady Zhou lifted her eyelids and noticed Lian Shouren. He sat dejectedly in the corner, silent.

"Jizu’s wife," Lady Zhou called out to Lady Chiang, "leave the peanuts, Niuniu, bring another dish and help me peel these peanuts. We’ll use them for your grandfather’s drinks tonight."

Hearing this, Da Niuniu immediately responded and went to get a dish. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Lian Shouren, hearing Lady Zhou mention him and even saying she would let him drink in the evening, looked up at her. However, Lady Zhou didn’t acknowledge Lian Shouren, instead dropping her gaze and starting to peel peanuts.

Lady Chiang’s mouth twitched faintly, fully understanding the situation. Though weary at heart, she had to feign joy on her face. It was typically her turn to speak at times like this.

"Grandmother still dotes on her grandchildren." Lady Chiang smiled, "She knows Niuniu’s grandfather hasn’t had a drink in days. But grandmother, is peanuts the only thing for the drink?"

"What else should I prepare for him? Look at how he irritates me; he doesn’t deserve any good food." Lady Zhou replied angrily, without looking up, continuing to peel peanuts.

It was Lian Shouren’s turn to speak.

"Mom, you’ve been scolding me all this time, and I haven’t said a word." Lian Shouren managed a slightly pleading smile on his face.

If someone saw Lian Shouren’s expression at that moment, they would struggle to tell if he was laughing or crying.

This was something the family had long grown used to.

"What, do you want me to scold you more?" Lady Zhou finally looked up, casting a glance at Lian Shouren. Yet, her tone was no longer angry, and her glances weren’t fierce.

"How dare I?" Lian Shouren lowered his head, chuckling.

Lady Zhou snorted coldly.

"Wasn’t there still meat bought the day before yesterday? There should be more than half a pound left. Cook it with potatoes for dinner. Otherwise, they’d say there’s nothing for the drinks." Lady Zhou thought for a moment and instructed Lady Chiang.

"Alright." Lady Chiang replied promptly, "Grandmother really cares for her son."

Only then did the commotion over Lady Zhou scolding Lian Shouren completely settle down. In this little drama, everyone in the room had likely rehearsed many times, except for Lady Zhou, who never tired of it and truly enjoyed it, whereas Lian Shouren and Lady Chiang felt deeply helpless and weary.

However, they couldn’t avoid playing out this routine. If they didn’t follow through with it, Lady Zhou would continue to make a fuss until they cooperated and performed this skit, only then would she stop.
