Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Puppy Love?

"You do have it! I saw you crumple it up and stuff it into this pocket." Zhang Liye seemed shocked that Gu Nuan Nuan would dare to lie and deny it right in front of Teacher He.

"I really don’t."

Gu Nuan Nuan looked at him with an innocent expression, glanced at Teacher He, and then turned out her pockets to show everyone.

"Impossible. It must be in the other one." Zhang Liye pointed to her other pocket.

Without another word, Gu Nuan Nuan turned out her other pocket as well.

"Did you secretly put it in your desk or your bookbag?" Zhang Liye’s face flushed red, his voice trembling.

Gu Nuan Nuan simply pulled her bookbag straight from her desk, shoving it into Zhang Liye’s arms. ’She’d be damned if he could find anything in there.’

Zhang Liye searched Gu Nuan Nuan’s bookbag once but found nothing. Sweat started to bead on his forehead. Unwilling to give up, he searched it again and again, two or three more times. Finally, in a panic, he got down and checked the desk and even the floor. His small eyes were practically bulging out of his head, but he still found nothing... Drenched in sweat and still not convinced, he looked back, casting a suspicious glance at Dong Xinran.

Dong Xinran had long since returned to her normal self. She secretly shot a provocative glare back at him. Then, with an air of complete openness, she copied Gu Nuan Nuan, first emptying her own pockets and then holding out her bookbag. "You want to search my bag and desk, too?"

"That’s enough. Everyone sit down and let’s continue the lesson." Teacher He shot Zhang Liye a harsh glare. "Come to my office after class."

"Teacher He, I really did see it..." Zhang Liye whined, his face crestfallen.

"I said, sit down." Teacher He’s brow furrowed, her tone sharpening. She turned and went back to the lectern. A moment ago, seeing how calm and unhurried Gu Nuan Nuan was, she had already started to suspect that Zhang Liye was lying. ’That child has always been a bit petty. For some reason, he just doesn’t get along with his deskmate, Gu Nuan Nuan. He’s always coming to me with some harmless little complaint. I never thought much of it before, since it wasn’t a big deal. To think it’s now escalated to him slandering his own deskmate? For the sake of harmony in the classroom, it would be best to separate them.’

Homeroom Teacher He was a decisive person who acted as soon as she had an idea. Seeing that the students below were all whispering to each other, their attention completely diverted, she frowned in displeasure. After another glance at Zhang Liye, she casually pointed to a seat diagonally across from him, two rows back. "Zhang Liye, you switch seats with Xu Liang."

Zhang Liye immediately looked dejected. With red-rimmed eyes, he gathered his textbooks and bookbag and stood up. Gu Nuan Nuan’s new deskmate soon arrived in his place—this time, it was a delicate-looking and slightly shy little boy.

’Hm, this one’s good. He’s quite easy on the eyes.’

Gu Nuan Nuan flashed him a wide, friendly, sweet smile. Her new deskmate flinched slightly before quickly forcing a smile that looked more like he was about to cry.

Gu Nuan Nuan frowned. ’Am I that scary? Looks like my new deskmate is a bit of a scaredy-cat.’

The bell for the end of class rang. The moment Homeroom Teacher He walked out, the classroom erupted into noise. Gu Nuan Nuan’s new deskmate vanished in a flash. Dong Xinran immediately darted to the front and threw her arms around Gu Nuan Nuan’s neck, cheering, "Nuannuan, you were amazing!"

Gu Nuan Nuan smiled without a word. ’Even though I still remember the names and faces of these classmates, I never really got to know them in my past life, so I don’t really understand their personalities. Still, the students now are nowhere near as precocious as the kids of later generations. Most of them are still innocent and pure.’

"Hmph! Gu Nuan Nuan, you just wait!" Zhang Liye rushed over and spat a fierce threat at Gu Nuan Nuan. Then, before she could even react, he turned and left. Teacher He had told him to find her after class, and he didn’t dare delay for too long.

"That guy..."

Gu Nuan Nuan found it both amusing and baffling. ’In my memory, this elementary school deskmate of mine was incredibly petty. He not only liked to draw a line down the middle of the desk but also used his compass to defend his territory. As a child, I really hated him for it, but that dislike gradually faded as I grew up. He just became an unimportant classmate in my memory, one whose name had even become blurry. That’s all...’

"Don’t be afraid of him. He’s just Lin Jiayi and Lin Jia Bao’s little lapdog. Let me tell you, he secretly has a crush on Lin Jiayi. That’s why he’s always picking on you," Dong Xinran said, her eyes filled with contempt as she watched Zhang Liye’s departing figure.

"Uh..." ’What is this, puppy love? Or a secret crush? Isn’t it a bit too early for that?’

Gu Nuan Nuan complained silently. ’No wonder Zhang Liye was never friendly to me.’

"Nuannuan, I thought I was done for! If my parents found out I was goofing off in class, they’d definitely beat me. You’re so amazing, you weren’t scared of Teacher He at all! Quick, tell me, where did you hide it? How did Zhang Liye not find it?" Dong Xinran chattered on excitedly. When she asked the last question, though, she at least had the sense to lower her voice, and she looked at Gu Nuan Nuan with an expectant expression.

"This is a sect secret, not to be passed on to anyone but my personal disciples." Seeing Dong Xinran’s clear eyes, flushed cheeks, and the excited, expectant look on her face, Gu Nuan Nuan let the joke slip out.

"Aww—" Dong Xinran was a little disappointed but not angry. Instead, she looked eager. "How about I join your sect, then?"

"You can’t. I’m already the Closed-door Disciple," Gu Nuan Nuan said, shaking her head regretfully.

"Aww..."

"Hahaha..." Seeing that Dong Xinran only looked disappointed and not the least bit angry, Gu Nuan Nuan’s favorable impression of her grew immensely. ’Maybe if I can shake off the shadows of my past life, I can try to make a good friend or two in this one, starting now. After all, friendships from your school days, especially elementary school, are the purest and least complicated.’

"Nuannuan, there were so many people watching the commotion over at our place yesterday. They were saying all sorts of things... I even saw several of our classmates there watching..."

Seeing that Gu Nuan Nuan wasn’t going to share her secret of how she hid the item, Dong Xinran didn’t press the issue. She steered the topic back to something she was interested in, whispering in Gu Nuan Nuan’s ear, "You know, my mom secretly told me yesterday to play with them less in the future. Hmph, hmph. I never liked Lin Jiayi anyway. She’s so arrogant all the time, acting like she’s the only princess around. She doesn’t just like to bully you; I’ve suffered at her hands plenty of times, too. All she does all day is throw her weight around because her grandfather is the director of my dad’s factory. Her brother is no good either. He always backs her up, making it seem like it’s the other person’s fault when she’s the one bullying them. And every single time, my parents just tell me not to argue with them and to just let them have their way, or else my dad will be in trouble... So, I’m sure we’re not the only two who hate her."

Dong Xinran couldn’t help but gloat as she spoke.
