They drove stakes into the dike and then placed sandbags on top. This way, things were much simpler and less labor-intensive.
Jiang Xue had been on the mountain all the time, but she could see the situation below clearly. Once the stakes were almost done, she stopped and sat down to rest.
At this moment, a sound of footsteps came, and Mu Qiancheng appeared in front of Jiang Xue. Seeing him, Jiang Xue smiled and asked, "Why did you come up? Are you done down there?"
"Not yet, almost finished. I came up to check on you," Mu Qiancheng said as he sat down beside Jiang Xue and held her hand. "Xue’er, thank you for your hard work!"
"It’s nothing!" Jiang Xue shook her head, keeping silent about the help from Big Tiger and Little Fox. Let her keep some mystery.
Jiang Xue and Mu Qiancheng didn’t sit for long before they went back down. After all, the task wasn’t complete, and they still needed to help out.
Mu Qiancheng got back to work on the flood defense after going down, while Jiang Xue sat by the side, helping to treat any soldier’s injuries if needed.
They kept busy like this until late in the night. The river dike was finally secured, but the brothers were exhausted. They couldn’t care less about the dirty ground and just sat down.
Seeing the brothers tired and hungry, Jiang Xue felt a bit distressed. She suddenly stood up and headed to a secluded spot.
She planned to take out some food from her space so everyone could have a bite and not go hungry. It would be best if they could have something hot, but unfortunately, all the firewood outside was soaked by the rain and couldn’t be used.
So, they could only eat some braised meat and dry rations.
At first, Mu Qiancheng thought Jiang Xue left to relieve herself. But when he saw her returning with a box, he immediately understood her intention.
So, he quickly stepped forward, took the box from Jiang Xue’s hands, and said to everyone, "Brothers, Xue’er and I brought some food when we came. Since everyone is hungry, let’s share it."
As Mu Qiancheng spoke, he placed the box in front of everyone. Seeing the food, everyone immediately cheered up. When they opened the box, they found it filled with packaged braised meat, which made them even happier.
These days, they hadn’t had many chances to eat meat. During missions, they usually only had dry rations and rarely even had jerky.
Having braised meat now was a true delight. The box of food was quickly shared among everyone. Of course, portions for Mu Qiancheng and Jiang Xue were kept aside.
A group of people gathered around to eat. Although there was no fire, they still felt warm. After eating, everyone had rested sufficiently, and seeing the dike looking stable, the brothers decided to return to the main camp.
By the time everyone returned to the main camp, it was almost dawn. No one even washed up; they just stripped off their dirty clothes and fell asleep.
Jiang Xue and Mu Qiancheng also went back to their tent. Seeing Mu Qiancheng covered in dirt and herself not very clean either, Jiang Xue pulled him into the space. The couple took a shower together, changed their clothes, dried their hair, and then went to sleep.
Since everyone was tired and returned quite late, they all slept until noon. This way, breakfast was skipped, and they got up to have lunch directly.
After lunch, Jiang Xue saw the brothers discussing something.
