Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Successfully Passing the Test
A brilliant smile on his face, Wu Yun greeted Wenfeng and Tang Chunmei. "Uncle, Auntie! Hello! I’m so sorry. I had a company meeting this morning, so I’m just getting back now!"
Tang Chunmei rose from the sofa and walked over, saying, "It’s no problem, no problem at all. I didn’t realize Xiaowu was so young and accomplished. Our Wen Meng is really marrying up!"
Just a moment ago, Wen Meng had already given her parents the rundown on Wu Yun—except for the fact that he had two other girlfriends.
The more Tang Chunmei and Wenfeng looked at Wu Yun, this young man who had already built such a massive enterprise, the more they liked him. And when they factored in his handsome appearance, Tang Chunmei couldn’t have been more satisfied.
Wu Yun had expected them to grill him with personal questions, but after he arrived, they only praised him a few times. Wenfeng, in particular, was very interested in his company.
During a lull in the conversation, Wu Yun glanced over at Wen Meng.
Wen Meng gave him an "OK" sign, and Wu Yun felt half his tension melt away.
It was getting close to mealtime, so after chatting for a little while,
Wu Yun stood up and said, "Uncle, Auntie, let’s go eat! I was going to cook for you at home, but it seems we’re short on time."
Naturally, Wenfeng and Tang Chunmei didn’t object.
Wu Yun had originally planned to take the three of them to a high-end private kitchen, but after their repeated protests, they finally settled on a hot pot restaurant just outside the residential complex.
The scorching-hot, beef-tallow red broth bubbled away. Tang Chunmei plucked a piece of tripe, shrunken from the heat, out of the pot and dipped it into her oil sauce.
As she ate, she remarked, "It’s a good thing Xiaowu is from Sichuan. Otherwise, coordinating our tastes for family reunion dinners would be a nightmare. I’ve always told Meng Meng not to find a boyfriend from too far away."
"Otherwise, when we go to visit her and help with the baby, we wouldn’t be able to get used to the local food. But now, we don’t have to worry about any of that!"
Tang Chunmei chuckled, popping the piece of tripe, now coated in chopped bird’s eye chilies, into her mouth and nodding with satisfaction.
Wu Yun placed a freshly cooked slice of tender beef into Wen Meng’s bowl before smiling. "Auntie and I have similar tastes; we both love spicy food. We have a specialty dish in Jingyang called ’Mute Rabbit.’ I wonder if you’ve ever tried it, Auntie?"
"I haven’t heard of it! What is it like?" Tang Chunmei asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Mute Rabbit, as the name implies, is rabbit so spicy it leaves you speechless." Wu Yun recalled the flavor—so spicy it had given him a stomachache—and his mouth began to water just thinking about it.
"We definitely have to try that!"
"Alright, next time I come to visit Mianzhou, I’ll bring a few boxes with me! I guarantee you, once you try it, you’ll be hooked!"
Wu Yun adeptly catered to their interests. Whether Tang Chunmei was talking about food or Wenfeng was discussing business and current events, Wu Yun was able to jump into the conversation.
This raised their opinion of him even higher.
However, when Tang Chunmei spoke about him and Wen Meng, she subtly hinted that they needed to be careful and not get her pregnant.
She suggested it wouldn’t be too late to consider such things after Wu Yun graduated and reached the legal age for marriage.
After dinner, the four of them stood in the underground parking garage. Wen Meng’s parents planned to do some sightseeing in the provincial capital, so they weren’t going to disturb the young couple any longer.
Tang Chunmei took a red envelope from her handbag and stuffed it directly into Wu Yun’s hand.
Wu Yun quickly tried to refuse. "Auntie, you don’t have to do this. It’s too much!"
"Take it! It’s a tradition where we’re from. The parents always give a red envelope at the first meeting. Or what, you don’t accept me as your ’Auntie’?" Tang Chunmei played her traditional trump card.
"Xiaowu, I know this red envelope is a small amount for you, but it represents a token of your Uncle’s and my goodwill. You have to accept it!"
Wu Yun didn’t put on an act, simply tucking the red envelope into his pocket. "Well then, thank you, Auntie and Uncle!"
Tang Chunmei got into the passenger seat, rolled down the window, and said with a smile, "Xiaowu, your Uncle and I are leaving now. You two take care of yourselves. And if you want something to eat, have Meng Meng cook for you. She knows how. Don’t let her fool you!"
"Alright! Come back to Mianzhou with Meng Meng for the holidays! And remember to visit for New Year’s this year!"
...
Wu Yun watched the taillights of the BMW 5 Series disappear around the corner of the garage, leaving a completely flustered Wen Meng and a smiling Wu Yun in their wake.
"What are you looking at?!" Wen Meng said, a little unnerved by the strange look in Wu Yun’s eyes.
Wu Yun gave her full, pert backside a playful swat. "So, you told me you only knew how to cook noodles, huh!"
"I also know how to make stir-fried beef with bamboo shoots!" Wen Meng said with a grin, then turned and bolted for the elevator.
It took Wu Yun a second to react. He brandished his palm, shouting after her, "I’ll give you a taste of something else first! You stand right there! Behave yourself~"
"Haha—ah!"
...
"Old Wen, what do you think of that young man, Wu Yun?" Tang Chunmei asked from the passenger seat.
Wenfeng glanced in the rearview mirror as he drove. "Don’t you already have an answer in your heart? Why are you asking me?"
"I just wanted to be sure. But that Wu Yun really is an outstanding young man! To be so self-reliant and build such a large business! Looking at the entire country, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone his age who can compare!"
"I’m just worried!"
"Worried that Meng Meng won’t be able to handle him?" Wenfeng cut straight to the point.
"Yes!"
Wenfeng wasn’t worried. He smiled and comforted her, "From what I observed today, that young man is a loyal and generous person. He’s also genuinely good to Meng Meng. Did you notice how he kept putting her favorite dishes on her plate?"
"So, let’s just focus on the present. At least they really like each other right now! As for marriage, it’s still too early. Anything can happen!"
After going upstairs and teaching Wen Meng a "lesson," Wu Yun flopped onto the sofa, pulled out his phone, and made a rare appearance in the class group chat.
"Hello everyone, congrats on finishing the military training! I know a lot of you are planning to go out this afternoon, so just a reminder: remember to gather at Shangyan at 6 p.m. tonight. Don’t forget!"
"Oh! And by the way, if you get there early, just give them my name."
After telling Zhao Yuqing about his plan to treat the whole class, Wu Yun had his secretary, Wang Hao, call Shangyan and book a table for 40 people that evening.
Because it was such a large group, Shangyan even gave him a discount. The total bill came to only 20,000 yuan.
As soon as he sent the message, many of the girls in the chat started posting animated "Thanks, boss!" stickers.
Interspersed between them were messages like, "Thanks for the treat, Witch Commander!"
But when Li Shiming popped up, the tone of the conversation shifted.
"Boss! I’m so jealous! You were out living the high life while we were in military training! We’re all tanned as dark as charcoal! Waaaah! No one will want me now, Boss, I can only rely on you!" Li Shiming whined.
"Get lost! I’m not gay! And I’m not interested in guys whose buttholes are tanned black!" Wu Yun typed back, laughing.
Wu Yun was just about to unsend the message when Li Shiming’s reply popped up.
"You’re lying! I just looked, and it’s clearly red!"
Liu Yongheng jumped in below: "Tang Taizong, how did you see that? What red chrysanthemum? Did your hemorrhoids just flare up?"
"Hahahaha!"
"Hahaha!"
"I’m usually a very serious person, unless I can’t hold it in! Hahahaha!"
...
Wu Yun chuckled and typed a few more replies before closing the QQ interface.
Yawning, Wu Yun got up, went into the bathroom for a shower, and finally laid down on his bed.
