Chapter 133: Chapter 133: Two Pieces of News
Xu Chenxi felt a little frustrated. Her tried-and-true tactics of praise and seduction seemed to be having no effect today. The food in front of him was apparently far more alluring than she was.
She watched as Wu Yun popped a whole garlic prawn into his mouth, his eyes already darting toward the mantis shrimp on the table. He looked like a man who hadn’t eaten in days.
Wu Yun’s mouth was stuffed. Seeing Xu Chenxi staring at him, he gulped down the shrimp meat and said, "What are you looking at me for? Eat up! This place is pretty good. Thanks for the treat!"
The corner of Xu Chenxi’s mouth twitched, but she quickly put on a gentle smile. "Young Master Wu, watching you eat really whets the appetite. Have you been too busy in Modu and the Capital City for a proper feast?"
"But that’s understandable. The cuisine over there doesn’t quite match the palate of the Ba and Shu Region."
Xu Chenxi picked up a garlic shrimp, used her chopsticks to scrape the minced garlic and chili off onto her plate, and only then took a small, delicate bite, chewing slowly and gracefully.
"Yeah, I’m just used to the spicy stuff," Wu Yun said as he picked up an abalone.
Xu Chenxi placed a piece of cooked lobster onto Wu Yun’s plate, a puzzled expression appearing on her beautiful face. "A handsome guy like you, Young Master Wu, must have tons of girls chasing after you at school. How come I didn’t see your girlfriend at the airport to meet you?"
"Sigh. If I had a boyfriend like you, I’d be at the airport in a heartbeat to welcome you back, as long as I was free. But alas, I don’t have a boyfriend."
As soon as she said it, Xu Chenxi acted as if she’d misspoken and hurriedly apologized. "Oh, I’m so sorry, that’s not what I meant! I just... I just meant I really want to find a boyfriend."
Her explanation only made things more muddled, making Xu Chenxi seem flustered and incoherent, like a startled fawn.
It was Wu Yun’s first time encountering such a high-level "green tea," and he found it rather amusing. ’Since you want to put on a show,’ he thought to himself, ’I’ll be happy to play along.’
"No need to apologize. You’re not wrong," Wu Yun said, even offering her a smile to ease her supposed tension. "I do have a girlfriend. In fact, I went to Modu this time just to see her."
By the end of the buffet, Wu Yun couldn’t even remember what he’d eaten. He only recalled spending the entire time locked in a battle of wits with Xu Chenxi, each of them probing the other’s intentions.
When Wu Yun dropped Xu Chenxi off at the entrance of the Hilton Hotel, she said coyly, "Young Master Wu, would you like to come up for a bit? We could just chat."
Wu Yun feigned hesitation. "Is that really a good idea? A man and woman, alone together... Besides, what if my girlfriend calls to check up on me? We’re friends now, there’s plenty of time in the future!"
But Xu Chenxi just smiled. "It’s fine. If she video calls, I can just hide off to the side. I really just want to talk with you. I feel like I learn so much from our conversations."
"And if..."
Xu Chenxi let the words hang in the air, building the suspense.
"And if... you wanted to stay the night, that would be fine too. The suite is huge, after all. I should be thanking you for booking such a nice hotel for me. I can just sleep on the couch."
Wu Yun looked conflicted for a moment before finally agreeing. "Alright. But just for a little chat. If it’s still early when we’re done, I’m going home to sleep."
"You go on up to the lobby and wait for me."
Seeing the confusion on Xu Chenxi’s face, Wu Yun explained, "I’m going to video call my girlfriend first."
Xu Chenxi nodded understandingly and smiled. "No problem. You two take your time. I’ll be on the sofa over there in the lobby!"
Once he saw Xu Chenxi walk into the lobby, Wu Yun pulled the car into a nearby parking spot and started a video call with Qi Fei.
A black face with only its eyes and mouth visible appeared on his phone screen, making Wu Yun’s hand tremble.
"Xiaoyunzi, you miss me?" Qi Fei’s voice sounded a bit stiff from the face mask she was wearing.
Wu Yun chuckled. "Hey, the *Wolf Warrior* crew is about to get started, with filming expected to begin at the end of the month. You’ll need to coordinate your classes. Oh, and your role isn’t that big, so there’s no need for you to be on set the entire time."
On the other end of the call, Qi Fei mulled it over for a moment before replying, "Xiaoyunzi, I still want to spend more time on set to learn. Don’t worry, I’ll coordinate my classes. My studies won’t be affected."
On his end, Wu Yun nodded. He then recalled something Wei Feng had told him earlier and quickly added, "Also, find some time in the next few days to go to Phoenix Entertainment and sign on as one of their actors. It’ll make it easier for them to direct resources your way. I’ve already seen the contract; the terms are very generous."
After all, Wei Feng was also a shareholder in Phoenix Entertainment. Even though Wu Yun was the majority shareholder, not having a formal contract in place would cause problems. Wei Feng might not say anything now, but once the company started funneling significant resources to Qi Fei, he and the other artists would inevitably have their own opinions. This would be detrimental to the company’s internal harmony.
Of course, this wasn’t to say that no one would be jealous once Qi Fei was a signed actor, but it would eliminate a whole host of unnecessary problems.
Qi Fei was thrilled, knowing that she was about to officially embark on her acting career.
Since Qi Fei had the call on speaker, the other three girls in her dorm room heard every word from Wu Yun loud and clear. While they were happy for Qi Fei, they were also incredibly envious.
"Oh, right," Wu Yun added. "I also had Wei Feng arrange for a female assistant and a female bodyguard who will double as your driver. You just focus on your studies and acting; leave everything else to them!"
His words sent a stir through Qi Fei’s dorm room.
Qi Fei hesitated. "Is that... really okay? I don’t have any fame to my name yet. Won’t people say I’m acting like a diva? Besides, I’m sure Brother Jing won’t give me a hard time on set."
"You’re bringing funding to the production. What’s wrong with having money? And it’s just a bodyguard and an assistant. It’s a far cry from the truly high-profile, ostentatious entourages some people have."
"Alright! I’ll let you girls get back to it. Remember to sign the contract. Oh, and don’t forget to go house-hunting. A villa or a large apartment, either is fine!" Wu Yun’s words plunged the dorm room into stunned silence.
The room erupted in a flurry of noise the moment Wu Yun hung up.
"Feifei! You still looking for someone to ride your coattails?"
"Feifei, you guys are buying a house now?!"
...
Earlier that afternoon, Wei Feng had brought Wu Yun two pieces of good news. First, they had secured the film rights to *Wandering Earth* and *The Three-Body Problem*. *Wandering Earth* cost 1.2 million, and *The Three-Body Problem* cost 2.4 million.
All in all, the prices were within their expected range.
The rights to *Ghost Blowing Light* were still being negotiated, and it looked like there were still many issues to resolve.
As for other properties, Wei Feng’s people had easily scooped up a whole pile of promising film rights, such as for *Spy War on the Bund*, the original novel that *Disguiser* was based on.
Wu Yun had also told Wei Feng to keep an eye on the rights for some of the bestselling novels on Singularity.
Wu Yun was very satisfied with Wei Feng’s efficiency and speed. The company had only been established for a few days but was already achieving results. The credit for this went largely to Wei Feng and his team.
After hanging up the video call, Wu Yun called Bai Yue to whisper some sweet nothings, then dialed Wen Meng’s number.
By the time he was finished with all the calls, Wu Yun had been sitting in his car for nearly half an hour.
