Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Ah Yun, I Miss You
Weaving through the tree-lined campus, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, Wu Yun was the very picture of youth.
Capital City Normal University had a very low building density. The buildings were spaced far apart, dotted with groves and lakes, making it feel more like a park.
However, Wu Yun was in no mood and had no time to linger. He just headed straight for the sports field.
"One~ two~ three~ four~ one two three four!"
Ringing chants and the sound of synchronized footsteps filled the air. They were all male voices. It seemed to be the same everywhere: during military training, the guys always had it the worst. Enduring the blazing sun overhead, standing on the sanitary pads in their shoes, their throats felt like they were on fire.
Wu Yun felt rather lucky he had been excused; otherwise, he too would be struggling against the scorching autumn heat with them.
Looking at the vast sea of military green, Wu Yun felt a bit stuck. ’How am I supposed to find her in this?’ They were all wearing the same uniform. Never mind him, even a drill instructor could get lost in this crowd.
The very air he breathed felt hot. Even though Wu Yun was on a bike, his back was already soaked with sweat.
Instead of searching immediately, Wu Yun first turned his bike and headed toward a small stand run by some upperclasswomen.
"Hi! What can I get for you?" a girl with a few pimples on her face greeted him warmly.
Wu Yun thought for a moment, then playfully made a show of calculating on his fingers. "I’ll take two bottles of mineral water—one room temperature, and one frozen."
After placing the water bottles into the front basket, Wu Yun got back on his bike and started circling the sports field.
Wu Yun planned to call Bai Yue if he couldn’t spot her after two laps. ’It’ll be less of a surprise, but showing up out of the blue is still a surprise in itself.’
"Hey! Xue’xue, look, quick! A handsome guy!" a girl with sweat-streaked cheeks said from her spot in the shade, patting her friend’s shoulder.
"I already saw him. This is his second lap," the girl replied nonchalantly. "See how he keeps looking in? He’s either checking out girls or looking for someone." ’With how handsome he is, I’m definitely not his type.’
Wu Yun’s appearance excited many of the girls who held romanticized ideas about college, and they began pointing and whispering in his direction.
As Wu Yun began his second lap, a drill instructor near the fence noticed the growing commotion and barked, "Quiet! Rest properly! No chattering, or you’ll all get up and stand at attention!"
After that, he stood by the fence and yelled at Wu Yun, who was a few meters away, "Hey, student! What are you doing wandering around for no reason? If you’re bored, go eat! What girls are you trying to check out over here?"
The drill instructor’s words made many of the girls giggle.
Wu Yun was pretty thick-skinned. Instead of leaving, he pushed his bike closer and said, "Sir! I’m looking for someone—my girlfriend. Could you tell me where the Chinese Language and Literature majors are?"
But who would’ve known the tall drill instructor would shout back, "Get outta here! I don’t even have a girlfriend, and you’re coming here to brag about yours? Go find somewhere cool and stay there!"
"Hahahaha!~"
Unfazed by the girls’ laughter, Wu Yun grinned cheekily. "Hey, don’t be like that! Be a gentleman! There are so many girls here; one of them might take a liking to you! Come on, tell me where the Chinese Language and Literature majors are. If you don’t have a girlfriend, I can introduce you to someone. I’ve got a ton of connections..."
The drill instructor was young himself, probably only a year or two older than Wu Yun. Hearing this, his expression immediately brightened. "The liberal arts students are over by the main platform. The person you’re looking for should be there. Now, quick! Show me which beauty you’re going to introduce me to."
Wu Yun hopped onto his Little Yellow Car, made a show of pulling out his phone, and suddenly shouted, "Any of you ladies have your eye on the drill instructor? Quick, raise your hands!"
The words had barely left his mouth when the Little Yellow Car shot forward like an arrow released from a bow. By the time the drill instructor realized what was happening, Wu Yun was already ten-odd meters away.
"Holy fuck! You little shit, you better not let me catch you!" the young drill instructor cursed at Wu Yun’s retreating figure. Then he turned around and saw a group of girls staring at him intently.
"Sir! How about me?"
"Sir, you really don’t have a girlfriend?"
....
Unfortunately, the main platform was inside the sports field, so Wu Yun had to lock his Little Yellow Car by the side of the path. Grabbing the two water bottles from the basket, he walked calmly onto the field and headed for the spectator stands beside the platform.
Wu Yun was grateful for his foresight. The frozen bottle of water was still mostly a chunk of ice, providing him with a constant source of coolness.
"Fall in!" A whistle blew. After several days of training, the resting freshmen quickly fell into formation.
At that moment, Wu Yun stuck out like a sore thumb. Many people noticed the guy in the white T-shirt heading toward the stands.
The sun wasn’t directly overhead yet, so a portion of the stands next to the main platform was still in the shade.
Wu Yun paid no mind to the dust on the stands. He simply blew a spot clean, plopped down, and let out a comfortable sigh as he felt the coolness of the concrete bleacher.
Instead of trying to act cool by winking at the girls below, Wu Yun carefully scanned the crowd, searching for the one person he came to see.
Perhaps it was a coincidence, but in the very squad directly in front of where he was sitting, his eyes immediately fell upon Bai Yue. Even in a baggy military uniform, she stood out like a crane among chickens.
Seeing Bai Yue’s eyes wide with disbelief, Wu Yun smiled and blew her a kiss.
"Oh my god, that handsome guy just blew me a kiss! It’s over, I’m totally smitten. What should I do? Teehee! So embarrassing!" Bai Yue heard the girl next to her whisper.
The first girl had barely finished when another piped up, "He was obviously blowing it to me! He’s so handsome! I think I’m in love!"
Wu Yun’s blown kiss caused a small commotion in Bai Yue’s squad, but it was over as quickly as it began, immediately quashed by their drill instructor.
"What are you fidgeting for? Don’t you want to eat lunch? Stand still! No whispering!" he barked, then shot a fierce glare in Wu Yun’s direction.
Wu Yun held up his hands in an innocent gesture, then raised his phone for Bai Yue to see.
"Want to go out for lunch?" Wu Yun texted Bai Yue, then remained on the stands, sending her flirtatious looks from time to time.
An unstoppable smile bloomed on Bai Yue’s face. Now the girls around her knew something was up, but intimidated by the drill instructor, none of them dared to turn around and see what was happening.
A series of turning commands echoed across the field, and the sea of green began to move, flowing in an orderly fashion toward the exits.
Seeing this, Wu Yun stood up as well. He gestured toward his phone again at Bai Yue, then grabbed his water and headed for the exit ahead of the moving squads. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
He followed the marching columns to the cafeteria entrance, where he found a conspicuous spot to stand and wait for Bai Yue’s group to arrive.
Soon enough, Wu Yun spotted Bai Yue at the edge of her formation.
He watched as Bai Yue exchanged a few words with her drill instructor. After getting permission, she broke from the line and ran toward Wu Yun with light, happy steps.
Wu Yun was hit by a gust of fragrant air mixed with other scents, followed by the feeling of something soft pressing against his cheek.
"Ah Yun, I missed you!"
