Chapter 267: Boons

"I’m...sorry..."

The room was silent, almost frozen in time.

All that echoed were sobs. Ariel almost instantly broke down, unable to stop himself, and so did Samael, the tears they both shed pouring out without end.

Unable to stop herself anymore, she rushed forward to Ariel’s side, kneeling beside him and doing her best to comfort him.

Uriel’s gaze flickered at the sight, and he felt a tinge of disgust and warmth flow through his heart. His lip twitched and he nearly lost control again, but in the end, he managed to hold on.

He looked away.

He didn’t try to comfort Ariel, he didn’t ask Samael any questions, nor did he say anything else.

He simply walked away.

...

In a corner of the room, Uriel sat on a stump he’d conjured. He faced away from the group, his expressionless face lowered as he stared at the ground.

He leaned forward, elbows resting against his thighs.

At times, his face was blank, but then his nose would twitch and his eyes would turn red, only for them to become a blinding sea of rose before collapsing back into ivory.

Uriel tried to control his breathing, but he couldn’t. He tried to control his heart rate, but he couldn’t. He tried to control his mind, but he couldn’t.

All he could feel was rage and shock. There was no end to any of it.

’Why did I say that...why did I...’

His words had been as violent as they could’ve been given the context, and he’d uttered them without even thinking. They came from the deepest depths of his heart and from years of solitary thought.

They’d cut so deep that even the seemingly mighty Ariel had instantly broken down.

But it wasn’t the way Uriel did things.

He was supposed to be happy to have his brother back, elated to discover a new member of his family, and in ecstasy at the thought of finally having family again.

But he just...couldn’t. All he felt was rage.

"Why the hell did I...how the hell is he alive...’

Uriel clutched his head, then closed his eyes and took a deep breath in.

There were so many questions. So many thoughts.

Too much.

’Damn it!’

Uriel’s eyes snapped open and he directly opened his weave. If he couldn’t get his mind to stop, then he’d distract it with the results of his evolutions.

’Weave status!’

It was time he discovered what his past self had forged him into.

Then, the system seemed to pause.

[You have unlocked a new Weave Slot category!]

As far as Uriel knew, Characteristics were boons from one’s subjects that mainly affected the body, showcased through his Void-Bound Iron Body, for example.

While, on the other hand, the traits were either physical or spiritual boons acquired from branching subjects, which could be seen through Uriel’s shell layers or his chaos blood. As of now, he didn’t have any spiritual traits, so to say.

But who was to say that Characteristics couldn’t have a spiritual counterpart?

[You have gained an Astral Spark Form!]

[You have gained an Astral Spark Form!]

It was a hidden part of one’s Weave, one that only some of the luckiest and most talented Ascendants would ever unlock.

From now on, as Uriel evolved, not only would he be getting Characteristics for his body, but he’d now also be getting Astral Forms for his soul.

And given the essence of his spark...that would be like adding more wings to an already flying tiger.

Uriel took the time to read every single line of his status, noticing all that was new, all that had changed, and all that he didn’t understand.

And as he read, he calmed down, and as if recognising his stabilising state, one by one, his new abilities settled into his form and activated, just as the last ebbs of information about Astral Forms streamed into his mind.

A couple moments passed, and he found his mind to be deathly still. Calm beyond words.

’These Astral Forms...that’s probably how I managed to fight my corruption so easily.’

Uriel didn’t waste time and immediately inspected his new boons, letting them unfold before him.

The first to appear were his shells, detailing the changes they’d undergone.

[Spark Characteristic: {Divine Sky Shell}

>Details: A Shell of Divine Ivory that fused into the body and skin, granting immense physical boosts and unmatched defensive enhancements.

•The body’s defenses are otherworldly, making it nearly impossible for the body to bleed out or lose limbs.

•The Shell also acts as a Primary Foundation for any future shells.]

But now, it was...

[Spark Characteristic: {Divine Void Heaven Shell}

>Details: A Shell born of Heaven and the Void itself, of divine fire and profane lightning, forged into an inborn jade wrapped and fused into the body and skin, granting immense physical boosts and defensive enhancements, but also unmatched senses.

•The body has been forged to be unbreakable and stands immune to most non Will-Infused aether, making injuries a rarity beyond words.

•The Shell acts as the primary foundation for any future shells and bodily characteristics, feeding off one another to form a foundation superseding all things.]

His Shell Traits, too, had changed, condensing into one boon as opposed to the numerous layers they’d had before, appearing as one within his weave.

They now read as such.

[Spark Characteristic Trait [Pioneer-Boon]: Void Heaven Shell Layers

>Details: An innumerable amount of shells layered beneath the heavens, beneath the void, and beneath the skies, using chaos and order as a foundation to grant one nearly endless stamina and defense as robust as earth’s will.]

...

Immediately, Uriel found this odd.

’Why did it all become hyper focused?’

Before, he’d had six shell types, some granting regeneration, some granting speed, some granting sensorial enhancements, amongst other things.

But now, it had become hyper focused on defense and stamina. Not only that, the Trait’s status described an ’innumerable’ amount of shells.

He was supposed to only have six. It was a minute detail, and most would simply take it as the system embellishing the truth, but Uriel didn’t think that to be the case.

After his encounter with the Regulator, he’d realised that the system was much more...alive and involved than he’d previously thought it was.

’That’s fine. With my hound evolution, I don’t need any offensive add-ons, plus regeneration doesn’t work on me, so perhaps this is for the best.’

He sighed.

’But if this is a boon my past self wanted me to have, I’ll have to assume it’s because I’m going to be getting hammered soon.’

He shook his head, then ignored the thought.

He focused on the next boon he’d gained from his massive evolution, these so-called ’structures’.

’....?!’
