Chapter 55: Chapter 55

Kyra’s POV

My wolf, Sylvia, was practically doing backflips in my mind as I stormed away from my office. "You accepted his courtship!" she howled with glee. "Our mate will claim us properly now!"

Ever since that night with Kieran, Sylvia had become utterly smitten with him. She adored Ronan, Kieran’s wolf, with an intimacy that bordered on claiming him as our mate. While I wrestled with guilt over our step-sibling ties, Sylvia felt no such conflict.

"No shared blood, no broken laws," she’d huff in my mind whenever I hesitated. To a wolf, our non-biological connection changed nothing.

I stopped dead in my tracks, pressing my palms to my burning cheeks. Moon Goddess, what had I just agreed to? By nodding to Kieran, I’d essentially accepted his courtship—a huge step. And there was no taking it back now, not with an Alpha as stubborn as Kieran.

The thought sent both excitement and terror coursing through me. What if this was another game to him? What if I ended up with my heart shattered again? But the raw sincerity in his blue eyes when he’d asked for a chance... that hadn’t been faked. No Alpha could fake that intensity.

"Stop overthinking," Sylvia chided. "Our mate’s scent doesn’t lie. He wants us."

"I smell something..." Yara’s voice snapped me from my thoughts. The she-wolf was grinning like she’d caught the scent of gossip—ironic, since her nose couldn’t actually detect the pheromones currently flooding the air around me.

"Nothing happened," I said too quickly, my face flaming.

Yara waggled her eyebrows. "Oh! I didn’t say anything, Ms. Kyra."

I bared my teeth in what I hoped was a falsely threatening snarl, hoping she’d understand the warning. "You wanna get fired?"

"Uh oh!" She danced out of reach, still grinning. "You won’t do that. So... he’s your mate now, right?"

The word "mate" sent an electric jolt down my spine. "Yara!"

My assistant was relentless. "Did you two discuss claiming bites? Or maybe some steamy nights—Ouch!"

I swatted at her, feeling like crying from embarrassment. Yara just giggled.

Sylvia, the traitor, was laughing in my head. "She’s not wrong. We should be howling for him."

My cheeks burned even more as I gasped. "Yara, stop it!"

"Ehh! From the looks of it, you already had a long steamy night—" freeweɓnovel.cѳm

I tried to hit her again, but before my palm landed on her arm, she quickly fled away from me and greeted the new customer that entered.

I palmed my forehead and squeezed my eyes closed. Gosh! She’s corrupting my mind, and because of everything she said, I didn’t know if I could properly face Kieran later.

The customer who picked up her orders came, and I was the one who entertained her. After she left, Yara came beside me again. I thought she was going to talk about work, but she had another vulgar comment that could corrupt my mind.

"Ms. Kyra, did you already try bj on him?"

I blinked. "What?"

Her grin turned wicked. "My innocent boss! You know..." She leaned in, whispering words that made my ears burn.

"YARA! I’m seriously firing you!"

She scampered off again, the perfect picture of innocence as she helped another customer. Meanwhile, my mind was spinning with images I had no business imagining—Kieran’s strong hands, his minty scent, the way his canines would feel against my—

"Focus!" Sylvia snapped, though she didn’t sound any less distracted.

The evening only got worse when Kieran arrived to pick me up. His cedar and musk scent wrapped around me the moment I slid into his car, making my pulse race.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when he leaned over to buckle my seatbelt—his forearm brushing my chest, his breath warm on my neck.

"What’s going on in that pretty head of yours, Kyra?" His voice dropped to that rough Alpha timbre that made my pulse leap.

"Nothing," I lied, staring resolutely out the window.

Kieran chuckled. Then suddenly he was closer, so close his lips nearly brushed mine.

"What are you doing, Kieran?" I asked, not even daring to look at him.

He chuckled softly again. "I’m planning to kiss you."

"What—" I was taken aback when I looked at him and realized our lips were almost touching. My heart raced like crazy.

I swallowed hard. "M-Move away..."

"No!" He looked straight into my eyes. "I’m going to bite your tongue and get the answer myself since you don’t want to tell me what’s on your mind."

I panicked. I knew him as a man who would do anything he said.

"I’m hungry! So I was thinking about our dinner."

Kieran’s smirk could have lit up the darkest night. "Dinner date, little wolf. Our first official date."

I expected him to pull away. Instead, his lips captured mine in a searing kiss that sent electric shocks straight to my core. It wasn’t deep or demanding—just a firm press of lips that somehow left me trembling more than any passionate kiss ever had. freewebnσvel.cѳm

When Kieran finally pulled back, I couldn’t tear my gaze from his. His blue eyes held mine captive, swirling with possessiveness and something deeper I wasn’t ready to name.

I sucked in a breath as he moved away after a few seconds. I looked at him slowly as he put his seatbelt on and looked at me with a grinning face.

I couldn’t look away. I felt like his eyes were drawing me in, tempting me to stare at him longer.

"Don’t worry about our date. Everything’s planned perfectly."

He planned everything? But why did I feel disappointed?

My eyes then landed on his lips as he started the engine and drove.

I swallowed hard, realizing why I was disappointed. It was because I expected him to kiss me more deeply and longer, but he didn’t.

I had a hard time convincing myself to stop sulking and just forget about what happened.

When we reached the restaurant, I was shocked to realize it was my favorite place.

Kieran’s hand settled at the small of my back as the hostess led us to our table, his touch burning through my dress. When he pulled out my chair, his lips brushed my ear: "You look happy, little wolf. Think I deserve a reward later?"

My cheeks burned again. I sat there stiffly while he walked to the chair across from me and sat down. I stared at his grinning face, but my line of vision suddenly got distracted by the people at the table behind him.

Nathan and Sophia. My former mate and his fated mate, dining at the same restaurant on the very night Kieran had chosen for our first date.

Kieran followed my line of sight and immediately stiffened, his Alpha instincts flaring. "Let’s exchange seats," he growled, already moving to shield me from view.

I appreciated what he said, but it was too late. The Moon Goddess clearly had a cruel sense of humor. Of all the nights for fate to intervene, it had to be this one.
