Chapter 160: Chapter 160

Kyra’s POV

Thanks to Luna Marlene’s suspicious car troubles and Snow’s not-so-subtle matchmaking attempts, I found myself driving Nathan to work.

He sat silently in my passenger seat, having quickly caught on to his mother’s scheme and, from what I could tell, fully embraced it.

"Kyra..." His voice broke through my thoughts.

I glanced over, catching him staring at me with those intense eyes. I bit my bottom lip, fighting the urge to kiss him.

"May I go with you whenever you need to visit your doctor?" he asked softly.

My heart fluttered wildly at the thought of him accompanying me to my pregnancy appointments. The image of Nathan beside me, watching our baby on the ultrasound screen, made me feel warm inside.

I managed a smile. "You don’t need to ask permission for something like that."

His face brightened. "Thank you. Uhm... are you really coming to the beach this weekend?"

"Why wouldn’t I?" I glanced at him again. "I could use some time to unwind."

"What about your investigation?"

"Even I need a day or two away from all this," I replied. "Unless... you’d rather I didn’t come?"

"What? No!" His response was immediate. "Having you there would make me very happy, actually."

As I pulled up in front of ADE headquarters, I turned to face him fully. "I’ll be there. Just let me know what time."

He nodded. "Snow loves being with Mom and Dad. She’ll stay with us for a while, right?"

I gazed into those mesmerizing eyes. "For as long as she wants to."

"Thank you, Kyra."

"It’s your right."

"Huh?"

My heart stumbled in my chest as I realized what I’d just said. The words had slipped out before I could stop them. Goddess, what was I thinking?

"Uh... she treats you like her f-father," I stammered. "So... I think it’s only right to let her spend time with you and your family."

His eyes bore into mine. "You won’t change your mind about me, will you?"

I took a deep breath and slowly shook my head. "No..."

He gently took my hands in his, his thumbs caressing my skin. My breath caught as he lifted them to his lips, placing a soft kiss on my knuckles. Sylvia practically purred at the contact.

"Thank you for the ride, Kyra. See you..."

I watched him get out of my car. My heart was beating so fast. I was about to drive away when movement in my side mirror caught my attention—Sophia, watching us with narrowed eyes. Rage bubbled up instantly, and I moved to confront her, but by the time I’d stepped out of my car, she’d vanished.

I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug into my palms. That woman wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted. I couldn’t believe she would stoop so low out of desperation. It was painfully obvious she was planning to get pregnant with Nathan’s child, but I’d never allow her to succeed, pregnant or not.

With anger still simmering, I drove to Monroe Group headquarters. My mood was sour during the entire meeting, and afterward, Yara informed me someone was waiting in my office.

Sara Foster sat stiffly in one of my guest chairs as I entered. This was my father’s company, and her presence here again was unexpected.

"To what do I owe this visit?" I asked coolly as I settled into my chair. freёwebnovel.com

She lifted her chin defiantly. "I’ll accept your terms."

The corner of my mouth lifted. "Are you sure about that?"

She gritted her teeth. "I want a position in my mother’s company, Kyra."

I crossed my legs and studied her intently. "I’m expanding the hotel chain. I want to open a new branch, and I want you to manage it."

Her eyes widened in surprise. "What?"

"You don’t want it?" I asked, arching an eyebrow.

"Of course I want it. But why would you trust me with something like that?"

"Simple..." I leaned back in my chair. "I need a significant favor, Sara. A high position for a big favor."

"What do you want?"

Taking advantage of her desperation might seem cruel, but my intentions were clear. I only wanted to ensure Connor and Diane could never claim any Foster property. I would make sure everything went to those who truly deserved it.

"Investigate an incident from the past—when my mother was abducted."

Her eyes widened with shock. "What? That was years ago, Kyra! How do you expect me to dig into something that happened so long ago? I was just a child then!"

"Yes, but you were involved, Sara," I reminded her. "Don’t worry, I’ll ensure no one discovers you’re investigating."

She locked eyes with me, jaw clenched. "You’re using me."

I smiled. "No, I’m offering you a bargain. The new branch will open soon. All you need to do is conduct this investigation. That’s it."

"If I fail... will you take the position back?"

"That depends on whether you truly try or not."

She stood, glaring down at me. "I’ll do whatever it takes to secure that position, Kyra. I won’t let you manipulate me like this."

"I’m not manipulating you, Sara. I’m asking for your help, and I’m compensating you generously for it."

She lifted her chin and tightened her grip on her handbag. "Give me this month. You’ll get what you want, and once I’m done, you won’t interfere with how I manage the new branch."

I nodded. "You have my word, Aunt Sara."

She stared at me for a few seconds before turning and walking out. I exhaled deeply and massaged my temples. I had just turned on my computer when the door swung open again.

"Where’s your friend?" a deep voice demanded.

I frowned as I looked up to see Matt standing there, his expression stormy.

"What?"

"Your friend, Kyra. I need to talk to her."

I tilted my head. "Emily doesn’t spend all her time at home."

His jaw clenched. "You’re living with her?"

"Yes."

He stalked toward my desk and leaned in. "Tell her I’m looking for her."

"Why should I?"

"Because I need to talk to her, Kyra," he insisted, his voice tight.

I smirked. "You wouldn’t even help me when I asked."

He looked away, and I caught a flash of guilt in his eyes. Something had happened. He’d discovered something. Emily was right.

I leaned forward, interlacing my fingers. "Tell me, Matt. What’s going on?"

He glared at me. "Nothing’s going on. Stop suspecting my parents—they don’t know anything."

I raised an eyebrow again and chuckled without humor. "We were talking about you and Emily, Matt. Why are you suddenly bringing up your parents?"

He swallowed hard and straightened, shoving his hands into his pockets as he avoided my gaze. "Just tell her I’m looking for her."

I watched his retreating back as he left my office. The fish is indeed caught by its own mouth. I couldn’t help wondering what he’d discovered that made him act so defensively.

Sylvia spoke in my mind. He knows something. Something important.

"I know," I said quietly, "And we’re going to find out what it is."
