Chapter 154: Chapter 154

Kyra’s POV

The sunflower field stretched out in front of me, their heads turned toward the sun. Emily stood next to me as the breeze moved through the flowers. After everything with Felicia and that fight with Matt, I needed to clear my head.

Sylvia paced restlessly inside me, sensing my unease.

"It was family all along," she whispered in my mind.

Felicia’s revelation about Don Gallian Foster possibly orchestrating my mother’s kidnapping when she was just a child had shaken me to my core. But with Gallian long dead, that particular trail had gone cold.

I had to focus on what I could still dig up about my mother’s murder. Attorney Lee thought those documents were gone, but I had copies. The way he suddenly backed off, though? That was suspicious as hell.

"What’s your next move?" Emily broke into my thoughts.

I let out a long breath. "Honestly? No clue."

"If you want this nightmare to end, you need people who can get to the parts of your past that are still locked away." She kept scanning the field like she was watching for trouble.

I shook my head, staring down at my boots. "Sara clearly wants nothing to do with this, and Matt... well, after what just happened, I doubt he’ll help either."

"I didn’t realize you had such a dick of a cousin," Emily snorted.

I let out a small laugh. "You haven’t met Mason yet."

Her eyebrows shot up. "There’s another one? Fantastic! I’d love to see if his neck breaks as easily as I imagine Matt’s would."

"His neck is definitely worth breaking."

"Oh?" Emily arched an eyebrow. "Worse than Matt Foster, huh?"

"Actually, I don’t think Matt is that bad," I admitted.

Emily scoffed. "Here comes the kind-hearted heroine routine."

"Em, I’m just being honest about what I feel," I said, laughing despite everything.

She rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Why don’t we explore this hacienda you’ll be managing soon?"

"I’m not going to manage this place," I said firmly. freewebnøvel.coɱ

"What?"

I lifted my gaze to the vast sunflower plantation stretching to the horizon. "The Foster family business should go to someone who truly deserves it."

"Which is perfectly you," Emily insisted.

"Not me," I shook my head. "I don’t know who, but definitely not me. My father’s company is more than enough. I don’t need their wealth, Emily. I’m pursuing this for one reason only—to bring justice to those involved in my mother’s death."

"And you already have names, right? You just need solid evidence and witnesses?"

I bit my bottom lip, feeling the weight of the task ahead. "Yes. Without more evidence, they’ll slip through my fingers and get away with everything."

"I think Matt Foster could help you, Kyra." frёewebnoѵēl.com

I turned to face her. "You really think so?"

"Absolutely," she smirked, a dangerous glint in her eyes. "Just let him investigate on his own. He’s closest to Connor and Diane Foster. If Attorney Lee’s report is accurate, Matt could uncover evidence without you having to risk your life."

I sighed heavily. "Matt might find the truth, but I doubt he’d help me if his parents turn out to be the culprits."

Emily bit her bottom lip, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Don’t worry about that. What do you think my flirting skills are for?"

My mouth fell open. "You’d do that? Wait... he might not fall for your seduction."

"That’s not a problem for me, Kyra. Trust me on this and focus on your other issue." Her voice softened. "Why don’t you just ask Nathan for a date and tell him everything? Keeping secrets isn’t healthy. Life is short—use the chances you’re given."

My chest tightened at the mention of his name. Despite everything between us, I still felt that pull whenever I thought of him.

"I’ll tell him soon, Emily," I promised. "But if I tell him now, he’ll be furious, and I can’t give him my full attention right now. When I finally tell him the truth, I want all my focus to be on him. After this mess is cleared up..."

"Then I definitely need to move quickly to help you. Don’t worry and leave Matt Foster to me."

I smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Emily. I don’t know what I’d do without you."

"At first, I only wanted to save your daughter," she admitted. "But now... I can’t let anything happen to Snow’s mother. I’ll use every resource I have, drain my father’s accounts if I must. Just promise me you’ll stay alive until your daughter gets married and builds her own family."

My heart warmed at her friendship. "Of course."

After our talk, we returned to the ancestral house to prepare for our departure. I headed to the kitchen looking for Felicia but found someone else instead.

Matt sat alone on a stool at the island counter, a half-empty bottle of whiskey before him. His eyes were distant, troubled.

I approached quietly, and he immediately looked up, his expression hardening.

He laughed bitterly. "Do you honestly think you can convince me this family is hiding something so hideous? Maybe Mom’s right—you just came to destroy what we have."

My wolf bristled at the accusation, but I kept my composure. "Believe whatever helps you sleep at night, Matt. But don’t blame me when your precious family falls apart. I wanted a family too after losing my parents to cruel deaths. I wanted my daughter to meet my mother’s relatives, to have people she could call her second parents. But your family doesn’t want us."

He glared, his jaw clenched tight enough to crack teeth. "Because you’re taking everything away from us!"

"Did I ever say I wanted the company?" I asked.

Shock flashed across his face, but I kept my cool. "I never wanted anything from your family, Matt. But your grandmother entrusted me with something she couldn’t leave to your parents. Doesn’t that make you wonder why?"

His eyes darkened further. "Grandma only trusted your mom, Kyra. She just didn’t like my parents and aunt."

"And you never questioned that?" I pressed. "Never wondered why, after all these years, your grandmother chose me, the daughter of her favorite child? Why she left the company and all her properties to me when she never even met me? She trusted me over your parents. Isn’t that strange to you?"

Frustration and confusion battled on his face. "Just get to the point, Kyra! I know you’re holding something back!"

I smirked slightly, knowing I’d planted the seeds of doubt. "Didn’t you come here to escape the chaos? You can find your peace here, Matt. Stay if you want. This isn’t my home anyway."
