Chapter 14: Chapter 14

Kyra’s POV

"W-What do you want from me?" The little girl’s voice trembled, her small body shaking with terror. Tears streamed down her face as she stared into the darkness where the scary monster lurked.

That girl was me. At twelve years old, I’d been taken by rogues—left in a pitch-black cellar for three days before my father’s warriors found me.

The sudden darkness brought that horrible memory back, and I couldn’t help shivering. "P...Please, le...let me go."

"Kyra... Kyra, look at me. I’m here. I’m here for you." A calloused hand cradled my face, wiping away tears.

The voice felt familiar, but my eyes couldn’t focus. The cruel laughter still lingered in my mind. I felt the air getting thinner and I couldn’t catch my breath.

The next moment, I felt someone’s soft lips on mine—so gentle, so warm, and comforting.

It was Nathan. His minty scent wrapped around me. I felt secure, comforted, before I completely lost consciousness.

When I opened my eyes, the sterile white of the pack hospital greeted me. Nathan hovered over the bed, his brown-flecked eyes dark with worry. Behind him, Luna Marlene gasped.

"Kyra! Thank the Moon Goddess you’re awake. Are you okay, sweetheart? We brought you to the hospital. You collapsed."

Hospital? I panicked! No! They couldn’t find out about my pregnancy!

"There was a power interruption in the venue because of an electrical problem. It’s alright, sweetie. No one’s going to hurt you," Luna Marlene said, holding my hands and caressing them.

She knew I had been kidnapped by rogues before and thought I was panicking because of that.

They didn’t know about the pup?

"Are you okay, Kyra? Are you hurt?" Alpha Richard asked, and even though his eyes were cold, he looked genuinely worried.

I felt tears at the corners of my eyes. I pulled my hand from Nathan and wiped my tears. I nodded and smiled at them. "I’m fine. Thank you. I—I just... I just had a bad dream." freēwēbηovel.c૦m

I nodded and sniffed, calming myself down even though I was thinking about my pregnancy. They seemed clueless. I wondered if they had already talked to the doctor.

Sylvia growled. "Why do you have to keep this secret? As the pup grows in your belly, they will find out sooner or later."

"I know, but I don’t want my pregnancy to ruin Nathan’s plan to marry Sophia."

Sylvia sighed and stayed quiet.

I saw Phoebe sitting on the couch, playing on her phone. I bit my bottom lip. I hadn’t talked to her about what she heard, and I didn’t think she planned to tell her parents about what she learned.

Nathan’s eyes were on me, watching me, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. I wanted to avoid him, especially now that he might learn about my pregnancy. I couldn’t let him know. I didn’t want anyone to know.

Someone knocked on the door and opened it. My heart skipped a beat when a she-wolf doctor entered, wearing a beautiful smile. She was the doctor who had confirmed my pregnancy.

She looked at everyone before fixing her eyes on me, and her smile slowly faded as if she saw the desperation in my eyes.

"Doctor, how is she?"

I swallowed hard as I stared at her. She started walking toward my bed, never taking her eyes off me.

"Please don’t tell them I’m pregnant," I sent her through the mind link.

"Why? Luna Kyra, it’s great news for Alpha Nathan and the whole pack," she replied.

"I’m no longer the Luna since Nathan and I severed the mate bond. We haven’t announced it to the entire pack yet. I don’t want to make things more complicated. Please help me."

She winked at me, then looked away and smiled at Luna Marlene beside my bed. "Luna Kyra is fine, Luna Marlene. She fainted because of panic, but she’s fine. There are no complications or anything. She’s...safe."

I was able to breathe properly because of what the doctor said. I looked at her again and slowly nodded, thanking her for hiding the truth. She smiled at me before she left. She just told us that I could now go home.

Alpha Richard and Luna Marlene didn’t know our mate bond dissolution was already processed. They told Nathan to send me home and take good care of me.

They left the hospital.

Once alone, the silence was killing me. I remembered that Nathan had kissed me before I fainted. But why did he kiss me? Best friends shouldn’t kiss, should they?

I cleared my throat and was about to speak when he spoke first.

"I’ll send you home."

My heart clenched. He had forgotten that kiss, or he didn’t care about it at all? Yes, that was right. It must have been a mistake or even an illusion. I didn’t need to talk about it, only to embarrass myself.

"No, thanks. I can go home by myself." I grabbed my bag and reached for my phone. "Luke will—"

"Are we going to fight over this again, Kyra?"

Sylvia snarled. "Because he chose Sophia over us!"

I looked at him languidly. "I’m not picking a fight."

He sucked in his breath and clenched his jaw. He looked away and didn’t respond.

I ended the call and looked at Nathan. "I want a peaceful life, Nathan. I don’t want stress. I don’t want problems. If you didn’t notice, Sophia has been shooting daggers at me during the party. I don’t want a fight, so we should draw a boundary between us or you’ll see me fighting with your first love."

He looked at me angrily. "Why don’t you just tell me the problem, Kyra? Tell me personally so I will know. Not like this. Tell it to my face instead of shoving unreasonable excuses at me. You just want me out of your life, right? Right? Is this about the rejection hurting your pride? Am I right?"

I looked at him blankly. "I’m not shallow."

"Yes, you are! You’re being childish! For God’s sake, Kyra! You’re going to throw away our friendship just because I hurt your pride?"

I gritted my teeth. "Yes! That’s my reason. I want you out of my life because I can’t accept that you would throw me away just because your first love is back."

He palmed his face. "Who said I’m throwing you away? You’re being selfish, Kyra! I love her! And you know that I love you, too, so I decided to let you go so you could be happy with someone you deserve."

I laughed sarcastically. "You can’t even stand seeing me with someone else. How can I be happy with someone I deserve, Nathan?"

"Chris is not a good man! He doesn’t deserve you!"

"Then who? Who deserves me, Nathan?"

He was rendered speechless. He couldn’t answer as he stared into my eyes. I knew then. He was confused. He was torn by his own feelings. He loved Sophia, but he couldn’t be with her because he felt that if he marked her, he would lose me. How pathetic!

I got off the bed and stared into his eyes. "Why don’t you give me a year, Nathan? Leave me alone for a year and try to figure out if you want Sophia... or just can’t stand me moving on."

His silence was answer enough.

"You are trying to hold us in your manipulative hands, Nathan. You’re a mess."
