Chapter 128: Change of Plans
Agent-YN closed her eyes for a moment. When she reopened them, they were cold and emotionless.
"I do not fully believe your story, but I do not dismiss it either. Regardless of whether it is true or not, it is undeniable that this information changes nothing. I am now a Reaper, and I only take orders from above. Isn’t that right, Agent-YX?"
Seraph blinked in surprise, then nodded, "You’re right."
He stood up and put on his mask again. Then, he turned to her.
"Let’s return. The mission is failed."
Agent-YN nodded and stood up too, though it was regretful that her mask had been lost.
The two quickly returned to their checkpoint in a few hours, and they were transported back to the base.
Seraph took the mission plate and returned it to the girl behind the counter to register the mission as failed.
Meanwhile, Agent-YN went to report the course of events to her own superior.
After turning several corners, she arrived at a hallway with over ten offices that were numbered accordingly.
She walked to the fourth door and knocked. After a full minute, she heard the voice coming from inside.
"Come in."
She immediately pushed the door open and walked inside the office.
The office was simple, yet furnished sharply. There was a brown wooden desk in the center with a chair behind it.
The walls were painted white, brightening the rooms slightly by absorbing the light given off by the lanterns.
Agent-YN stood in front of the table, gazing down on the masked woman seated on the chair.
"Reporting as supervisor for Mission 244XC5V," She said, earning a nod from the masked woman.
This was her signal to continue talking.
"Our target, the child named Jayde Skye, was being protected by a Soul Cross Sect disciple at the Peak Master Stage cultivation. Agent-YX and I failed to break through her defenses and had to retreat."
The masked woman nodded with a hum, then asked, "Is there anything else you want to add?"
Agent-YN paused for a moment, then shook her head.
This pause didn’t escape the woman’s notice. She leaned forward and asked, "You’re hiding something. What is it?"
Agent-YN froze, then lowered her head, "It is something personal. I’m afraid I cannot share."
This made the woman even more displeased, "You cannot share? Who do you think you are? When I ask you something, you answer me."
Hearing this, Agent-YN gulped and finally spoke. "You told me my father tried to rape me, and I killed him. Is that... true?"
The office fell into an awkward silence, then the seated woman exhaled. She took off her mask, setting it on the table before her.
Instantly, Agent-YN’s expression shifted to disgust. The woman’s face was completely ruined and disfigured that she found it very hard to stare for long.
"I was brought up by the Reapers. From the scratch. I started from the bottom before reaching my current position."
She leaned forward, her eyes squinting, "Do you think I wasn’t interested in my own background too? I had to erase the thought of it in myself, though."
Agent-YN tilted her head, confused, "Why?"
The ugly woman gave a grotesque smile and answered, "Because as long as you’re in this place, your whole existence is now owned by the Reapers. Do you understand? Your past does not matter, and your future does not matter too."
Her eyes glinted with a mad light, "That is why I disfigured my own face. So I will have nothing else to look back at and feel strange."
Agent-YN blinked in surprise and lowered her head, "I see. I understand, superior."
"Good," She smiled and put on her mask again. "Now, you may go if you have nothing to say anymore."
The black-haired girl nodded at her, then turned around and left the office.
Once she was gone, the masked woman grunted in displeasure.
"I don’t understand why Manager-0Y refused to disfigure the two of them. Tsk. Now it’s already causing problems."
She leaned back into the chair, then clicked her tongue.
"If it proves troublesome, then I’ll just eliminate them both."
.....
Meanwhile, Seraph had just returned to his room, feeling like he had received the greatest psychological blow in his life.
His elder sister’s memory had been wiped, and she was now a Reaper for who knows how long. His little brother had also been targeted, and thankfully, Sylvia had been there to ward them off.
’Really... why are the Reapers targeting my family?’ freewēbnoveℓ.com
He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists in anger.
["Oi, oi! You’re getting really flustered, aren’t you? Relax, okay? It’s nothing big!"] Halo said in a soft chiding tone, as if trying to smoothen things out.
"Nothing big? They dared target my family. I’m done waiting for the perfect moment to strike, Halo. I no longer want this group. I will annihilate them from the inside."
Halo sighed like it was rolling its eyes, ["That’d be a great loss of potential assets! You could use them properly if you wait and take over the top echelon of the organization."]
"Is that so...? Well, I guess you’re right," Seraph stood up, his figure swaying. "I’m sorry, Sect Master. But I’ll have to destroy your effort and break this place apart."
He rolled his shoulders, then took out a special storage ring he had kept hidden in the room.
"Using this should be enough to take out the bots. But for the tougher ones, I need to break through to the Core level."
He had been busy stabilizing the spiritual energy in his dantian for a while now, and he was finally ready to advance to the Core King Stage cultivation.
Locking his door, he sat on the bed and placed diamond spirit crystals around him. Then, he began cultivating.
A week passed by without any disturbance, then the wind in his room picked up. It started blowing around him fiercely, as if he had become the eye of a whirlwind.
High above the base that was deep underground, thunder rumbled in the sky for a few seconds, then everything cleared up.
The wind in Seraph’s room also died down, as he had fully stepped into the Core King Stage. While he was basking in the awe of his breakthrough, Halo was feeling distressed.
["The Divine Beings of this world are starting to notice him. Once they know he’s one of our hosts, they’ll eventually come for him."]
It was something common to all hosts of the Bureau System. After all, the Divine Beings of each world viewed people like Seraph as intruders who were going to disrupt thflow of their world.
["Tsk. I guess I have to start hiding him proactively. I can’t let the lad get killed. Tsk."]
Meanwhile, Seraph finally opened his eyes. A sharp glint passed through them, and he stood up.
"That was neat," He smiled.
From inside, Halo snickered, ["Of course, it would be easy! Look at what cultivation resource you’re using! That’s a diamond spirit crystal! It’s really a great one. Don’t be a brat and look down on the crystals. Sects would wage wars to get their hands on these crystals you have."]
Rolling his eyes, Seraph retorted, "I know that, dummy. You don’t need to preach to me about the value of cultivation resources. I literally stole this from a big sect, so..."
Clicking his tongue, he stood up and went out of the room. As usual, there were some reapers moving around with their masks on.
Seraph ignored them and headed to the bathroom. Today was going to be a gory day, so he was determined to get a refreshing bath.
After the bath, he put on his black robes and mask, then stepped out of the bathroom carrying a pistol in each hand.
The other reapers around immediately noticed what he was carrying, and were confused.
After all, they had never seen such equipments before.
However, they didn’t remain confused for long. Seraph raised the two guns and fired at two reapers.
Bang! Bang!
The two of them crumpled to the ground, blood flowing from their skulls. There was a brief pause, then the others reacted immediately.
Snap!
Someone threw a dagger at Seraph, but he simply dodged and pulled the trigger. Another reaper collapsed to the ground—dead.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
More reapers fell to the onslaught of Seraph’s attacks, and the sound kept attracting more.
Soon, the hallway was completely silent. Then, the alarm horn blared. The hallway shook from the sound, and Seraph patiently waited.
From the command talismans attached to the walls, a calm voice spoke.
"Agent-YX, you are being ordered to stand down immediately. If you refuse, you will be confiscated."
Seraph was silent for a moment, then fired another bullet at a corpse. That was his answer.
"Understood. All Senior Agents should head to Division F-359 and take down the target—Agent-YX."
Then, the voice went silent. Seraph calmly reloaded the guns in his hands, then patiently waited for the agents coming after him.
