Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Easier Said Than Done
A few hours later
Damon was lying in his bed, one hand behind his head and his eyes fixed on the ceiling. After what had happened with Gaea, Damon had cleaned her and then himself before taking her to bed so she could rest. The goddess had ended up falling asleep on top of him, exhausted after a rather intense session.
Speaking of the green-haired woman, she was currently sleeping on him, her hair spread everywhere, her arms wrapped around the redhead, clearly not letting him go for anything in the world.
Damon lowered his gaze toward her for a moment. Honestly, he had not planned any of this for today. He was not going to lie, he had wanted the primordial for a long time, but he also was not someone who chased women like a madman, though he rarely had to. Usually, they came to him and, well, here they were. Though, if he was being honest, he was not complaining at all. Complaining about his current situation would be stupidity.
"You’re still awake," Gaea suddenly murmured without opening her eyes. Damon lowered his gaze toward her, a small smile appearing on his face. "Look at that, sleeping beauty finally decides to wake up. Though, if I’m being honest, a few hours ago you were more beast than beauty." The primordial slowly opened her eyes, and Damon saw her face warm slightly before she let out a small sound of complaint. Gaea settled more comfortably against his chest, burying her face against his neck as she searched for his warmth and, at the same time, tried to hide her blush.
The truth was that Gaea really was embarrassed, though not in the same way a mortal woman would be. She was not ignorant of the act itself. To her, the union between two beings had always been more connected to creation, to the conception of life and the natural cycle of existence. Pleasure, on the other hand, had never been something that interested her too much. Not until now.
She would not dare say it out loud, at least not yet, but she had liked the way Damon had treated her. More than she expected. And if she was completely honest with herself, a part of her already wanted to feel it again.
Damon, unaware of the goddess’s thoughts, remained silent while a faint amusement crossed his mind. He found it curious that many of the oldest and most powerful beings were precisely the worst when it came to showing simple emotions. They had been born with too much power, and that meant very few people dared to treat them as anything more than forces of nature. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Gaea was a slightly different case, of course. Many descended from her, and her presence had always been tied to the gods, the titans, and almost everything that touched the earth. Even so, Damon could tell she was not used to being provoked in such a direct way, without fear, reverence, or some hidden intention behind it.
For a moment, neither of them said anything, both lost in their own thoughts. Even so, it was not an uncomfortable silence. After everything that had happened, it was clear that the two of them were far too comfortable with each other’s presence, perhaps more than either of them would have admitted out loud.
"What are you going to do about the other factions?" Gaea finally asked. Her fingers moved slowly over Damon’s chest, more thoughtful than provocative. "Eventually, you’ll have to deal with them. Zeus was not exactly popular among many leaders, but that does not mean they will stay still if they start thinking you might be worse than him."
Damon did not answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the ceiling while a brief silence fell between them. That question had already passed through his mind too many times before. "Unless they come looking for me first, I have no reason to try anything with other factions. Except the Shinto, of course."
He made a small pause before continuing, this time with a more serious tone. "But I’m also not afraid to act if the situation calls for it. What would I have to fear if I can crush most of them? The only thing that truly worries me is my family."
Gaea did not need him to explain further. She understood what Damon meant. His priority was his own pantheon and his family. He had no intention of going out to look for problems outside the pantheon just because he now had the power to do it, but if those problems decided to come to him, he would not back down either.
"Right now, my attention is on Kronos," Damon continued, finally lowering his gaze toward her. "He must have already learned about my return. The only thing I wonder is whether he will keep trying to free himself or calm down a little knowing what is waiting for him outside." Damon let out a low sigh without moving the hand resting on Gaea’s back.
"Either way, I already told Hades to keep his attention on that. I’m sure there is more behind the matter than it seems. Otherwise, it would make no sense for Kronos to be trying to move right now, even with Olympus as weak as it was before I arrived."
Gaea listened carefully, without interrupting him.
"As for the other factions," Damon added, "yes, they are going to hear what happened. Some will want to confirm if it’s true. Others will start measuring whether Olympus is weaker or stronger with Zeus off the throne. And I have no doubt some idiots will think this is the best time to try their luck." His expression turned serious. "If they do, they’ll have their answer. Simple as that."
Gaea rested her chin on his chest, watching him with more attention. "I see you’ve thought about this quite a bit." Damon gave a slight nod. "Obviously. I thought about it many times before even taking the throne from Zeus." Gaea stayed looking at him for a moment before a small smile appeared on her face. "You will be a good king, without a doubt. I’m sure Chaos will be pleased."
Damon raised an eyebrow at the mention of the creator of the universe. At this point, he felt like he should have met Chaos a long time ago, especially considering everything that had happened since he was claimed by her. Even so, he preferred not to think too much about it. Powerful beings were strange, and primordials seemed to enjoy appearing when it suited them, not when someone expected them.
For a moment, only the sound of water from the spring in the other room could be heard. Damon closed his eyes, reflecting a little. Without a doubt, the situation was complicated. They had not even touched the subject of mortals yet, and the fact that Greek mythology was being forgotten, slowly moving into the background of the modern world, was a problem he simply could not fix overnight.
On the other hand, Gaea seemed satisfied with his answers, but there was still something else she wanted to say. Damon noticed it instantly. It was not difficult. The way her fingers moved more slowly over his chest, and the way her gaze lost some of its amusement, were enough to give her away. "If you have something to say, you can just say it, Gaea," the redhead said, pulling her against his body with ease.
Gaea let out a low sigh before answering. "It’s about Rhea."
Damon closed his eyes immediately. The subject of his mother was something he had been avoiding since he took over Olympus, not because he did not care, but precisely because he cared too much.
It was easier to think about Kronos, Zeus, or even the mortals than to think about the woman who had given life to all of them and who, somehow, had ended up being left behind by the very family she helped bring into the world. After a few seconds, Damon opened his eyes again and asked in a lower voice, "What about her?"
Gaea remained silent, reading his reaction for a moment. Damon probably already knew part of what she was going to say. "She has been alone for a long time." Damon’s jaw tightened slightly, but he did not interrupt her. Gaea continued in a calm voice. "After the Titanomachy, there were moments of happiness, yes. It was not all distance from the beginning. But eventually, the gods moved on as best they could, and for many of them, that meant burying everything that had to do with the titans."
Damon said nothing. He knew perfectly well what Gaea meant, and honestly, he could see how for someone like Zeus, Rhea’s presence would be an uncomfortable reminder. She was still a queen from a previous era, and she had been Kronos’s wife.
What bothered him most was how easily he could imagine it. Zeus building Olympus around his own glory, leaving out anything that did not serve to feed the image of the king who had defeated the titans. Rhea was not convenient for that story. She was Zeus’s mother, yes, but she was also Damon’s mother and living proof that Olympus’s victory had not been as clean or as simple as many preferred to remember.
"Where is she?" Damon asked.
Gaea did not take long to answer. "On a remote island created by the gods in the Atlantic Ocean. It is not visible to mortals, so she lives there completely alone."
Damon nodded, and in that same instant, his consciousness began moving above the Atlantic Ocean through the sky. His domain extended with the wind and with the invisible pressure that covered the world from above. It did not take him long. In a matter of minutes, he found a familiar presence on a secluded island.
"I see," Damon murmured.
Gaea lifted a hand and caressed his cheeks with both thumbs while looking at him with a small smile, though there was no teasing in it this time. "You should go see her as soon as possible."
"Yes," Damon replied, letting out a low sigh. "Though it’s easier said than done."
Gaea let out a small laugh, understanding perfectly what he meant. She could not lie, a part of her was also curious to know how Rhea would react to seeing Damon again after so many years. But she did not say that out loud. It was not the moment to turn it into simple curiosity.
"I’m just as responsible as the others," Damon murmured, already feeling the headache approaching.
Gaea watched him in silence, not contradicting him immediately.
Damon ran a hand through his own hair, trying to organize his thoughts. Without a doubt, dealing with his mother felt much more difficult than any fight or war.
Gaea sat up a little on top of him, watching him with a mixture of calm and gentle amusement. "That sounds like a wise decision. You won’t want her to find out on her own."
Damon felt a small chill run down his back at the thought. "Yeah, that does not sound good for me at all. Goodbye to my peace." Amusement slowly returned to Gaea’s face, with a faint blush. This time, though, her lips curved with more intention as she barely moved her hips over him. "I can make it up to you if you want," she said suggestively.
Damon glanced at her from the corner of his eye, but this time he did not play along. "Don’t start." His hand moved to the primordial’s waist for a moment, holding her carefully before moving her aside. Gaea did not resist.
Damon sat up on the bed and ran a hand over his face, letting out a low sigh before standing. With a simple snap of his fingers, his clothes appeared on his body.
Gaea stayed on the bed, watching him in silence for a few seconds before speaking again. "Are you going alone?" Damon did not answer right away. He thought about Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. He was not really against the idea, but right now, he preferred to go alone. He did not want to hide behind a family meeting. He preferred it to be between him and Rhea.
"First, alone," Damon finally answered. Gaea accepted the answer without arguing. Damon walked toward one of the open windows of the temple, letting his gaze drift for a moment into the calm sky of Olympus.
Gaea remained sitting on the bed, saying nothing else about the subject. She understood perfectly how serious it was for Damon. There were moments when even she knew when to stay quiet, and this seemed to be one of them.
Damon stayed in front of the window, but before disappearing, he turned his gaze back toward the primordial. Then he walked back to the bed, leaned toward her, and took her face with one hand. Gaea looked at him with some surprise, though she did not move away. "Thank you for today, Gaea," Damon said in a low voice.
The primordial did not answer immediately. Damon brought his face closer to hers and kissed her without hurry, this time not as a provocation, but as a simple way to make it clear that what had happened between them had not only been a moment of desire. Gaea closed her eyes and responded to the kiss almost immediately, her hands moving up to his arms as her expression softened.
When Damon pulled away, Gaea still had a faint warmth in her cheeks. Damon caressed her cheek with his thumb. "And so you don’t start imagining strange things," he added, "yes, I look forward to repeating it."
Gaea’s reaction was immediate. She looked away for an instant, but she could not hide how much she had liked hearing that, something Damon found rather amusing. The goddess tried not to show much, but the small smile on her lips gave her away completely. "Then don’t take too long," she replied, trying to sound firm, though she failed terribly, much to the redhead’s amusement.
Damon let out a low laugh and straightened. "I’ll try not to make an impatient primordial wait." Gaea looked at him with a slightly raised eyebrow, but before she could answer, Damon had already taken a step back, disappearing in a breeze of air.
Gaea stayed looking at the place where Damon had been for a few seconds longer. Then she brought a hand to her lips and let out a small laugh to herself, still feeling the warmth of the kiss. Finally, she lay back down on the bed, settling between the sheets while inhaling Damon’s scent that still remained there.
Clearly, the goddess was not planning to leave the temple anytime soon.
