Chapter 518: Chapter 518

"What the hell is going on here?"

Douvoi, the man in charge of this operation was baffled by incompressible things that were occurring.

All forms of explosive become inactive whenever they reached around six kilometers from their target.

Some of them managed to get further, but not a single one had hit the enormous cargo ship since a couple of minutes ago.

Had it just been a few weapons, it would have been easy to disregard. But all of them. That should have been impossible.

"What are Vels and Kadfal doing over there? If the ship has some specialized defense system like this, they should have prioritized disabling it." Douvoi said, frustration and anger in his tone.

After several months of tracking Avery’s group and waiting for the right moment, he had been able to slip two of his men onboard as new crew members.

It had taken a ludicrous amount of money to have fake identities created that would hold up to thorough checks, but Douvoi had been told to complete his objective no matter the cost.

Daxton wanted the two for some reason that only he and some of his closest confidants were privy to.

Douvoi had only heard some rumors about it, but it seemed that there was something valuable their father had in his possession that only a direct descendant of the Woest bloodline could access.

Of course, during the war, no one had known this, and all of the other now deceased Woest chief’s children had been killed during the fighting.

Luckily, the two youngest had managed to escape and were still alive.

At the time, they had seemed inconsequential. Not sending resources after.

This lax attitude towards them had proven to be a major mistake though.

Now Kasandra and Kaiden belonged to a powerful mercenary company, and Kasandra had even married the leader of the group.

After Fahad’s failure, Douvoi had been dispatched to take over the operation.

Finding the right moment to strike was difficult to say the least, however.

He was not going to make the same mistake as his predecessor and strike too hastily.

That would only see him ending up in the custody of the Alliance Police like Fahad had, or more likely dead.

Thankfully, Douvoi’s waiting had finally paid off.

His spies had informed him of an undercover mission that Avery, the leader of the group, had accepted.

Being basically the lowest ranking members on the crew, neither Vels nor Kadfal had access to detailed information.

Still, they had known that the disguised carrier vessel would be forced to play the role of a normal cargo ship during this time and would be frequenting less populated areas of space to do business with a criminal organization.

To Douvoi, the fine details had not particularly mattered. All he cared about was the opportunity to complete his assignment.

He had been informed that the dangerous mercenary ship would likely not deploy any of its weapons at first, but he had still gathered the strongest fighting force that he could.

Things had been working out so far, except for the strange phantom power the giant vessels seemed to possess.

After a bit of analysis though, it had been determined that the range was a constant six kilometers.

It was simple enough to keep all of the ships out of range and attack from a distance. Their target was massive, so missing was not really a problem.

The biggest issue was not being able to use explosives.

Chipping through the shields with only laser and multi-cannon fire was going to take more time.

Had they been somewhere more populated, this might have proven a problem.

Luckily, the system where they had arranged the attack was practically in the middle of nowhere. They should have plenty of time.

"Have we reached any word from Vels or Kadfal?" Douvoi asked his adjutant sitting next to him.

"No sir. They’ve been quiet since the assault began. I imagine that they don’t want their locations to be comprised by sending an unauthorized transmission."

Naturally, this was understandable, but Douvoi was still dissatisfied with their performance.

The two of them were supposed to have sabotaged some of the ship’s critical systems to make the operation easier.

Their main targets were supposed to be either the shield generator, or the main reactor. If either of those were taken down, the rest of the battle would become trivial.

"Ah, perhaps they heard you, sir. We’re receiving a transmission now." The adjutant said.

Except, the person calling was not one of their spies as they had first thought. Instead, it was one of their targets.

"I see that you’re the one that Daxton sent this time, Douvoi. He always does like to saddle you with the dirty work. At least, that’s what I gathered from the reports to my father that I sneakily read." freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

It certainly came as a shock to see Kasandra contacting him, but he discerned the reason quickly enough.

"This is a very pitiful attempt at stalling. I know that you’ve been sending messages trying to bribe some of my fighters. The extra hands I have hired may be the types to take on any job no matter how unscrupulous, but they’re professionals with pride in their work. They’re not going to betray their contract at the first offer of more money." Douvoi said mockingly.

Kasandra glowered at him, obviously upset that she had been so easily seen through.

"You’ve got my intentions wrong. My captain did not tell me to do this. I’ve called you of my own volition to surrender myself to you."

Douvoi’s expression morphed into one of utter confusion when he heard this. It had certainly been the last thing he expected to hear.

Still, he collected himself swiftly. Such tricks were not going to work on him.

"Do you really think I’m going to believe that? You’re obviously desperate. We’ll breach your shields soon enough and come and collect you and your brother." Douvoi said, motioning for his adjutant to terminate the connection.
