Chapter 1086: Chapter 762: Hanging Out a Sheep’s Head [04]

"Someone’s been here."

Pedro Langley scanned the surroundings warily.

His voice was so low that only Nora Scott could hear it clearly.

Nora looked up.

At first glance, she couldn’t spot anything out of the ordinary. Her instantaneous memory was decent; before leaving, she’d specifically taken a look around the tent. Everything was exactly where it had been, with no visible sign of being disturbed.

Pedro Langley patted Nora’s shoulder, then walked over to their suitcases and picked up a small strand of wire from the ground.

He pinched it between his fingers, lifted it toward Nora, and let her take a look.

Nora’s brows knit slightly.

Then, after briefly meeting Pedro Langley’s eyes, she put down the clothes in her hand and slipped quietly out of the tent.

She waited just outside.

Pedro Langley followed her out as well.

"Before I left, I casually put a few wires down. It was just in case." Pedro Langley walked to Nora’s side, a jacket in hand, and draped it over her shoulders in one smooth motion.

Nora asked with a smile, "You’re this cautious?"

Pedro Langley’s lips curved. "When I’m out with you, an extra layer of paranoia never hurts."

"...Mm."

This was indeed something Nora had overlooked.

She had brought two suitcases, both of her own design, each with a specific opening sequence. Anyone who didn’t know the sequence and forced them open—would end up like Stella Durant back then.

She kept all her important materials in those suitcases.

On top of that, those two suitcases had Pedro Langley’s input as well. If someone stole them and forced them open abnormally all the way to the final step, an auto–self-destruct mode would trigger. At the same time, if they discovered the suitcases had been stolen and confirmed they couldn’t get them back, they could also remotely trigger the destruction sequence.

Because of this "insurance," Nora had relaxed her guard.

—Besides, this was her senior sister’s turf.

—She felt that just using mechanism suitcases already counted as being on alert.

She hadn’t expected that the person hiding in the external support team hadn’t come for her data and research at all.

"I found two bugs in my suitcase—one in a jacket, one in a pants pocket," Pedro Langley said, pausing slightly as he glanced at the tent behind them. "There are no fewer than ten bugs installed in our tent."

"Heh."

Nora let out a cold laugh.

This time, it looked like they were after their progress.

They wanted a detailed grasp of how much control they’d gained over Mechanism City.

—Think about it carefully: Nora was the only person in the world who could crack Mechanism City’s mysteries. Even if they got a perfect copy of the blueprints, it’d be useless to them.

Nora asked, "What’s your take?"

Letting his gaze sweep over the tents around them, Pedro Langley said lazily, "With our brains, there’s no way we wouldn’t notice."

Nora shrugged, accepting Pedro Langley’s logic.

She understood what he meant.

They didn’t yet know who had planted the bugs. But once that person finished planting them, afraid of being discovered, they’d definitely be watching the two of them—overtly or covertly.

In other words—

They had gone into the tent and come back out in under two minutes. That behavior made it obvious they’d sensed something was off.

If they pretended nothing had happened, that would be too fake.

Besides, with their IQ and observational skills, if they really failed to notice a dozen-plus bugs in the tent... then they’d be idiots, unworthy of engaging in a battle of wits and nerve with Alexander Vaughn.

Nora said lazily, "But we can afford to come off a bit worse?"

"That’s the idea." Pedro Langley smiled.

—They could show that they’d discovered someone had slipped into the tent and planted bugs. They could make as much noise as they wanted searching the tent for those bugs.

—But they could also "not find every single bug in the tent."

—At the same time, they could beef up security around the tent, making sure "there wouldn’t be a repeat incident," while conveniently feeding "the source of those bugs" a bit of the intel they wanted that source to hear.

In short, as long as they kept enough contingencies in play, the initiative stayed firmly in their hands.

Nora said, "Let’s give my senior sister a heads-up first."

Pedro Langley nodded, glanced toward the tent, and said, "Let’s just talk here."

"Mm."

Nora went back into the tent with Pedro Langley, grabbed her phone, and then stepped outside to call Fátima.

Not long after, Fátima herself came over with a few people in tow.

Outside the tent, those few exchanged a look with Nora and Pedro Langley. Then, at a wave from Fátima, the others went into the tent and started rummaging through everything, searching for the "bugs."

Fátima stayed outside, chatting with Nora and Pedro Langley. She didn’t say much, focusing mainly on "security."

Fátima said she’d assign people outside their tent, on three shifts a day, to make sure not even a fly could enter their tent without permission.

The handling was meticulous.

Before long, the people Fátima had brought had already found ten bugs.

Fátima told them not to make a fuss, then quietly had the bugs dealt with.

After all that, it was already late at night.

Only then did Fátima leave.

Nora and Pedro Langley had been running around the whole day. After a quick tidy-up of their luggage, they went to sleep.

...

The next day.

Nora slept in until the sun was high in the sky.

She casually straightened herself up without really bothering to get presentable, then lifted the flap and stepped out.

"Hall Master, good afternoon!"

The moment the sunlight hit her face, a synchronized greeting rang out from both sides.

"..."

Nora’s brows twitched in surprise.

Looking closely, she saw it was the two soldiers standing guard outside, greeting her.

"It’s already noon?"

Nora asked.

She rubbed her lower belly, feeling a bit hungry.

"Yes, ma’am."

One of them answered.

The other said, "Captain Morton said your two little brothers have arrived. If you’d like to watch a good show, she suggests you head over to her side before one in the afternoon."

"...Oh."

Nora’s drowsiness vanished on the spot.
