Chapter 420: Chapter 420: Meeting Demiurge

We emerged from the mouth of the narrow cave into the open ledge of the frozen cliff, expecting to see sentries—Quagoa guards scuttling around, sniffing the wind for intruders, crude weapons in hand.

But the ledge was empty.

Evileye narrowed her eyes behind her mask. "Where did they go?"

"We were sure there were guards stationed here," Tia muttered, glancing around with her twin beside her.

"Maybe they were called back for something urgent," Tina suggested.

"That’s the only logical explanation," Evileye replied. "But whatever pulled them away gave us a huge advantage."

Gondo let out a low grunt. "We should keep moving before the opportunity slips away."

They started forward. I didn’t.

"You guys go ahead. I have something I need to take care of," I said, keeping my tone even.

The others stopped and turned. Gondo blinked, clearly confused. Tia raised a brow, while Tina pursed her lips. Even Evileye gave me a skeptical glance, her red eyes narrowing.

"We came here to assassinate a Quagoa leader," she said flatly. "You splitting off now makes you look like an ass."

I offered no excuse. I just turned slightly and said, "If anything goes wrong, give the signal. I’ll hear it."

Evileye stared at me for a long second, then sighed. "Don’t mess up, Alex."

With that, I turned and vanished into the jagged rocks.

It didn’t take long to find him.

A silhouette stood calmly on a plateau overlooking the broken remnants of a Quagoa encampment. A dozen mangled bodies lay scattered at the base of the slope, frozen mid-scream. None of them had a clean death. They had been dissected, likely alive. Intentionally.

"Demiurge," I said quietly as I approached.

He turned around, but I saw the tip of his tail twitch behind him—he had known I was there before I even spoke.

"Lord Alex," he said smoothly, adjusting his glasses. "I expected you sooner."

"I didn’t expect you at all," I replied. "Why are you here?"

"To hunt," he said simply, gesturing with one gloved hand toward the valley. "The Quagoa are an unrefined species—brutal, but perfect for experimentation. Their resistance to magic and their adaptive physiology make them uniquely valuable."

His gaze shifted toward the peaks in the distance.

"And the Frost Dragons. I need at least one, preferably more. Their souls have a density of magical essence rarely seen. I want to attempt forging a Sacred Gear Lady Issey has."

I raised an eyebrow. "You think you can make something on par with the Boosted Gear?"

"Doubtful, my lord," Demiurge said with his usual analytical tone. "But the potential is there. If nothing else, it will give me data—perhaps a gear that channels magical resistance or one that manipulates cold. I won’t know until I begin."

I folded my arms and gave it a moment’s thought.

It was a fortunate coincidence.

"I only need one of the dragons dead," I said finally. "You can kill a dragon you need for research. But capture the rest. Bring them back to base and keep them alive. I want to study them further—see if I can bind them, perhaps even domesticate them. Keep the females alive." freēwebnovel.com

Demiurge turned to face me fully for the first time. His expression didn’t change, but his eyes gleamed.

"Interesting," he said. "Turning the mightiest predators of this region into tamed beasts... That would certainly cement your dominance."

"And give Nazarick an edge. Dragons aren’t just strong—they’re symbols. If we tame them, it sends a message."

"Understood. I’ll preserve as many as I can." He paused. "And what brings you to this frozen graveyard? And where is Solution, My Lord?"

"I’m here for an assassination," I said simply. "Quagoa leadership. Clean kill. No witnesses. And Solution is Feo Berkana. I told her to stay there."

Demiurge nodded slowly. "Ah, then we both find ourselves in the same arena. You collect heads, and I collect specimens."

"Just don’t get in my way."

He gave me a fanged smile. "I wouldn’t dream of it."

I took a step back, then looked at once again.

"...Why now?" I asked. "You could’ve done this weeks ago."

Demiurge looked back over the valley. "Because this is when the world is softest. The Dwarves are weak. The Quagoa are overconfident. The dragons are lazy. It is the perfect storm of complacency."

"Right, continue with your job; I will be joining my company." I said.

"As You wish."
