Chapter 781: Chapter 752: Gage Grant vs. Maeve [014]
(Request for monthly votes)
The Lester Family had an old villa in the suburbs of Z City, and when Maeve was in the first grade, the whole family moved from their old apartment to the villa.
More than twenty years have passed, and the once-new villa now has weathered walls.
Maeve got off the ride-share, and with the driver’s help, unloaded two large suitcases. With a guitar case slung on her back, she stood outside the iron gate of the old villa.
She hadn’t set foot here for six years.
Everything seemed unchanged, except her father’s old Mercedes was now replaced by a sapphire blue Bentley Continental, everything else looked just as it did when she left.
Maeve grabbed a suitcase in each hand, took out the key from her bag, and opened the garden gate.
The suitcase wheels rumbled over the cobblestone path, making a rolling noise.
It was Monday, so that woman should be at work. If she guessed correctly, that sapphire blue Continental in the parking spot belonged to her father’s concubine.
How ironic.
Maeve felt she was experiencing something surreal, her parents’ home had finally become someone else’s home.
With a "click," the front door of the villa slowly swung open from the inside.
A unfamiliar, unfriendly-looking woman stared at her for a few seconds, then suddenly burst out of the door, yelling, "Who are you? How did you get in?"
Maeve looked at the woman coldly, didn’t reply, and continued dragging her suitcase towards the front door.
The woman rushed forward, grabbing her arm, exclaiming in frustration, "Who on earth are you? How dare you come into our home? I’m calling the police!"
Maeve slightly raised her chin, looking down at the woman who didn’t even come up to her shoulder, "Are you the new maid?"
"What maid?! I’m the owner of this house!"
Maeve chuckled, "If I remember correctly, the owner of this house should be Leo Lester?"
"What nonsense are you talking? The master of this house is my son! My son’s name is Ethan Conrad!"
Even the countryside old mother of the mistress moved in.
Maeve’s gaze turned cold, she forcefully pushed the woman away.
"Oh my! Murder!"
The woman took the opportunity to fall to the ground, crying out in a wail.
Maeve didn’t look at her again, she pushed her two suitcases inside the house.
Without paying any heed to the crying and wailing outside, she took a glance around the living room and headed straight up the spiral staircase to her room on the second floor.
Just as she stepped onto the second-floor landing, the master bedroom door suddenly opened, and a drowsy-eyed man rushed out, bumping into her.
The man stared in shock for a moment, asking, "Who are you?"
"You’re living in my house and you ask who I am?"
Maeve didn’t want to waste words with this kind of person, but realizing she needed to make her identity clear, otherwise, she might not even get into her room.
The young man thought for a moment, trying, "Are you Diana Dalton’s eldest daughter?"
"No," Maeve smiled slightly, "I am not Diana Dalton’s eldest daughter."
The man looked puzzled, "Then who are you?"
Maeve smiled, "I’m Diana Dalton’s mother." She said, then dragged her suitcase to the room opposite the master bedroom.
The young man guessed who she was, eagerly ran over, and said with a grin, "I’m Ethan Conrad, Diana’s boyfriend."
Maeve ignored him, found the key, and opened the room door.
The room had been locked for six years, the musty smell that greeted Maeve made her cough.
Ethan squeezed into the room, covering his nose, helping her open the window for ventilation, "This room has been locked, I’ll have my mom come clean it up later, you can rest in the guest room first."
Maeve didn’t respond, she pulled a mask from her bag and put it on, directly dragging her suitcase inside the room.
Not getting a response, Ethan awkwardly chuckled and soon ran downstairs to call up the woman who had been making a scene earlier.
After hearing from her son that Maeve was the eldest daughter of this family, her attitude changed to being warm and friendly the moment she walked into the room, inquiring about Maeve’s well-being, not mentioning what had happened downstairs at all.
Maeve didn’t pay attention to the mother and son, and checked the things in her room on her own.
...
"Bang bang bang!" The wooden door of the old apartment was almost being hammered down by Gage Grant, "Maeve, open the door! I know you’re in there!"
The cellphone was clutched in her hand, the screen was stuck on the unsuccessful call attempt.
He continued to hammer the door.
At this moment, the elevator stopped, and a mother and daughter came out. The girl was carrying a school bag, clearly just returning from school.
The mother hesitated for a moment after seeing Gage Grant at Maeve’s doorstep hammering away for nearly an hour, then said, "I saw that girl in the morning carrying a guitar and dragging two suitcases when she left."
Gage Grant was surprised, turned around, "Are you sure it’s the girl from this house?" He gestured at his own shoulder, "About this tall? Short hair, skinny, very pale?"
"Yes, she’s a singer! I saw her on TV, there’s no mistake."
After the neighbor said this, she took her daughter inside and shut the door.
Seeing the lit slit under the neighbor’s door, Gage Grant suddenly dropped to the ground.
There was no light shining through the gap under Maeve’s door.
Unconvinced, he ran downstairs and looked up for her balcony and master bedroom; indeed, it was pitch dark.
"Gone?" Gage Grant was dumbfounded, returned to the car, and posted a message in the male idol group, tagging everyone.
Gage: "A woman gives her most precious thing to a man, but disappears the next day, doesn’t answer calls, what does this mean?"
Jack: "Either the man extremely disappointed her, or it’s playing hard to get."
Tobias: "+1"
Leo: "@Gage: Don’t stir up trouble, remember what I told you."
Jack: "@Leo: What did you tell Gage that I don’t know? Why are you keeping it from me?"
Tobias: "@Leo: I want to know too."
Gage: "@Jack: What are the chances of it being a case of playing hard to get?"
Jack: "Don’t you have a sense of the probability yourself?"
Gage recalled Maeve’s attitude towards him since they met, and the cold, indifferent stance she had after the event yesterday, feeling a chill in his heart.
He went over the events of the previous day several times, unwilling to give up, again tagging Jack Hawthorne on his phone: "But after the deed, she even made me a bowl of egg noodle soup."
Jack: "Are you sure she wasn’t just hungry and made some for you along the way?"
Gage: "..."
Meanwhile, several hundred kilometers away in Z City, Maeve lay on her bed, which she had just cleaned up, gazing out the window at the moon.
Her legs were propped up on the duvet to relieve bodily discomfort.
She was contemplating what to do to support herself after withdrawing from the scene, pondering for a long time, she came up with a few options.
Performing at a bar, opening an online shop, or using her savings to franchise a hotpot restaurant.
Performing at a bar was out because she might be recognized, so she could only try opening an online shop or franchising a hotpot restaurant.
Just as she was thinking about what to sell in the online shop, two consecutive honks sounded from downstairs.
She knew Diana Dalton was back, rolled her eyes, and continued thinking about her entrepreneurial path.
Ten minutes later, someone knocked on the room door, "Mr. Dalton is back, come down for dinner."
