Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Confronting my husband and sister
Standing in front of me were Lucas and Jessica.
His arm was wrapped possessively around her waist, steadying her against him like some devoted husband-to-be. One glance at the folder in Jessica’s hand was enough for me to piece everything together. Prenatal check-up. Of course.
Strangely enough, I felt nothing.
No jealousy. No heartbreak. No anger clawing its way through my chest the way it once would have. The old Evelyn might have broken down right here in the middle of the hospital corridor. She might have screamed, cried, demanded answers.
But the present me didn’t seem to care at all. I couldn’t even seem to bring myself to care. After all, I was forced into this loveless marriage for seven years. I had only stayed out of duty, and because of our daughter. But if she didn’t want me, I had no other reason to stay.
"Well, this is ironic," I said lightly, crossing my arms over my chest. My gaze flickered between the two smug expressions in front of me before settling on Lucas. "Shouldn’t I be the one asking what you’re doing here?"
Jessica’s fingers curled tighter around his arm.
I tilted my head innocently as the question left the tip of my tongue. "Aren’t you busy playing the role of the loving husband accompanying my sister to her prenatal appointment?" I asked, my words dripping with sarcasm, the corners of my lips twitching upwards.
Beside me, I could feel Rhys tense, his fists clenched tightly beside his body, turning his knuckles paper white.
"What do you think you are trying to say, Evelyn?" Lucas sneered, disdain written all over his face.
Beside him, Jessica tugged at his arm, putting on the look of an innocent victim caught in the middle of all this.
"Lucas, don’t..." she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she spoke. "It’s understandable that she’s upset and doesn’t want to help me. After all, I moved into your house and caused problems between the two of you. It was my fault she got chased out of her own room, and..." her voice trailed off as she lowered her head, acting like she was guilty, but I could see right through her little act.
Her voice wavered deliberately. "You spent so much time taking care of me...I’m sure she misunderstood, and it’s only natural that she is upset with me too."
I nearly laughed. Misunderstood?
As if she hadn’t knowingly crawled into my marriage and torn it apart piece by piece. As id she hadn’t slept with my husband behind my back and drive a wedge between us at any given opportunity.
Lucas might have been the one who betrayed me, but Jessica was far from innocent.
I stepped forward, closing the gap between us. With Rhys beside me, I suddenly felt braver, as though I knew he would stand by my side no matter what. "Oh, stop with the act already, Jessica. It disgusts me. I think you two know exactly what I am trying to say."
He let out a loud scoff. "Is it so wrong for me to accompany Jessica? She’s all alone with no one to help her. If you aren’t going to help her yourself, the least you can do is to be more understanding," he spat the words out like they were poison in his mouth.
A cold chuckle left my lips. "Oh no, there’s nothing wrong with accompanying her at all." I paused, a smirk creeping up onto my lips at the next few words that would leave my mouth. "After all, the baby in her stomach belongs to you."
Shock flashed past their features as they took a step back instinctively. Jessica’s face drained of color instantly while Lucas visibly stiffened beside her. For the first time since they appeared, their smug expressions finally cracked, and satisfaction bloomed in my chest.
"How..." Jessica whispered shakily while Lucas was rendered speechless for the moment. "How did you know?"
I smiled wider, though there was no warmth behind it.
"How did I know?" I repeated, my voice eerily calm. "The first night she moved into our house, I heard everything. Turns out the two of you were stupid enough to confess your affair under my own roof."
I watched as Lucas’s features twisted with anger. "You—"
He suddenly lunged forward.
Instinctively, I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself, but nothing came. When I opened my eyes again, Rhys was standing in front of me, shielding me from Lucas without hesitation.
"What do you think you are doing?" Rhys’ voice was deep and terrifyingly calm, but I could sense the anger radiating off his body. "You do not touch her."
"Who the fuck do you think you are?" Lucas spat, anger evident in his brown eyes.
"Someone you wouldn’t want to offend." His tone remained smooth, but the threat beneath it was unmistakable. "So I suggest you walk away before you regret it." frёeωebɳovel.com
"You don’t get to tell me what to do. That’s my wife!" Lucas yelled.
"Oh, really? Doesn’t seem like it to me." Rhys’ gaze fell on Jessica this time. "It seemed to me like the woman next to you is acting more like your wife than Evelyn is."
Silence stretched taut between us, as tension lingered around us, and even the air felt suffocating.
Then Jessica suddenly rushed toward me. "Evelyn, please!" she cried, grabbing onto my arm. "It’s not what you think! There has to be some misunderstanding—"
I yanked my arm away from her touch immediately, feeling disgusted by her.
"A misunderstanding?" I repeated sharply. "Do you seriously think I’m that stupid?"
Jessica flinched.
"You can have Lucas," I snarled. "I don’t want him anymore."
Her eyes widened slightly before her gaze shifted toward Rhys, who was still standing beside me.
Something ugly flickered across her face before her attention returned to me. She lowered her voice, and she asked softly, full of intention behind every word that spilled from her lips.
I knew exactly what she was doing.
"Is he the reason you’re divorcing Lucas?"
