Chapter 53: Ch 53: Gummy Smiles and Silly Promises
As they approached the stroller, Mo Yan’s eyes fluttered open, as if she had somehow sensed their presence even in sleep. The baby’s small face lit up instantly.
Su Wanyan’s expression softened with pure delight. She knelt gracefully beside the stroller, bringing herself to eye level with the infant. "Hi, little one!" Su Wanyan exclaimed softly, her voice overflowing with warmth.
Mo Yan responded with a bright, gummy smile and let out a happy cooing sound, her tiny hands waving excitedly in the air. Su Wanyan laughed, the sound light and melodic, her heart swelling with an overwhelming wave of love and adoration for the precious child. She reached out, gently rubbing Mo Yan’s chubby cheek with the back of her index finger.
Mo Xingxue stood nearby, watching the interaction with a soft, tender expression. Seeing her two favorite people playing so sweetly together filled her chest with quiet joy, like sunlight slowly blooming across a winter landscape.
Su Wanyan quietly activated her Heart of Nurture skill, a subtle warmth spreading through her as she checked on the baby’s needs. The result brought immediate relief—Mo Yan was neither hungry nor uncomfortable. She breathed out a soft sigh and continued playing, her voice full of affection. "Who’s the cutest little girl?" Su Wanyan asked, still gently stroking Mo Yan’s cheek.
Mo Yan kicked both her little feet in delight, her smile widening.
"That’s right!" Su Wanyan exclaimed, her own smile growing impossibly brighter. "You’re the cutest little girl in the whole world!" She continued the gentle caresses, completely enchanted.
Mo Yan squealed with happiness, as if she understood every word of praise. Su Wanyan’s laughter rang out again, soft and full of wonder. She’s so cute!! Su Wanyan thought inwardly. A bright, heartfelt wish followed: Man, I want Mo Yan to be my daughter. But the thought quickly dimmed. But I’m sure Mo Xingxue wouldn’t let me adopt her. A heavy ache settled in her chest for a moment.
Then, a sudden spark of realization hit her. Ah, right! If I can’t adopt Mo Yan, then I’ll just become her other parent! Her eyes shone with renewed hope, only for reality to set in again.
Nah, that won’t do. Mo Xingxue is my best friend, after all. Another sigh escaped her, carrying an unimaginable heartache. Yet the thought lingered. But if it does happen.... I wouldn’t be losing out either. Su Wanyan discreetly glanced at Mo Xingxue, then she swiftly pulled her eyes back. Just look at Mo Xingxue, Su Wanyan thought, almost losing herself to her friend’s beauty.
Mo Xingxue watched with quiet amusement as Su Wanyan’s face cycled through a whirlwind of emotions—bright hope, dejection, renewed excitement, and quiet longing. She couldn’t quite decipher what was running through her friend’s mind. "What are you thinking about?" Mo Xingxue finally asked, curiosity winning out.
"Huh?" Su Wanyan blinked, turning to look up at her. She hesitated for only a second before answering honestly. "Oh, I was just thinking about whether to adopt Mo Yan and make her my own daughter." She sighed softly. "But I know you won’t allow that."
Mo Xingxue laughed, the sound warm and fond. "It’s good that you know," she replied, reaching out to ruffle Su Wanyan’s hair affectionately.
Su Wanyan didn’t dodge the touch. Instead, she leaned into it slightly, letting Mo Xingxue do as she pleased. "Oh, but....." Su Wanyan added suddenly.
"Hm?" Mo Xingxue hummed, still gently messing with her hair.
Su Wanyan shifted, turning fully toward her with her knees drawn up, looking up earnestly. "I also thought of marrying you," she said honestly, her gaze steady and sincere as it met Mo Xingxue’s.
Mo Xingxue’s hand froze mid-motion. She blinked repeatedly, staring at Su Wanyan in blank shock. "Huh?"
The live barrage completely lost their minds at Su Wanyan’s casual, heartfelt words:
[SHE SAID IT! SHE SAID IT, YOU GUYS!]
[I have never been this happy for a couple. Congratulations, Mo Xingxue and Su Wanyan!]
[So proud of you, Su Wanyan! You finally have the balls to propose!]
[Am I the only one thinking Su Wanyan will say something about this just being platonic? (crying)]
[Nah, we’re all thinking about that. But let’s just celebrate for now. Let’s worry about the details later.]
[Congrats to the two cuties, and all, but where is Su Wanyan’s "wife" and the one who keeps reminding her to drink her medicine?]
[Upstairs, worry not for I am still watching our favorite couple. As for MY wife, she’s currently resting at the moment after our brutal "exercise".]
[YOOOOOOOO!?]
Su Wanyan, noticing Mo Xingxue’s stunned silence, quickly tried to explain. "Before you kill me," she started, looking up pitifully, "I want to inform you that it’s just because I want Mo Yan to be my daughter!" Su Wanyan twisted her upper body side to side, looking adorably silly as she tried to lighten the moment.
Mo Xingxue remained frozen, still processing the sudden declaration.
Unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—Su Wanyan was still rambling on, completely earnest in her explanations. "Also, think about it," she said, pushing up her golden-rimmed glasses with her free hand, looking every bit the scholarly alpha explaining a complex formula. "If we marry each other, I’ll have more opportunities to take care of you guys." freewebnσvel.cѳm
Mo Xingxue stared right at Su Wanyan, but her mind had floated far away, lost in a hazy cloud of surprise and fluttering emotions. She barely registered the words at all.
"When I get home from work, you don’t have to do anything at all!" Su Wanyan continued enthusiastically, then shook her head as if correcting herself. "In fact, I can even quit my job!"
Her nose tilted proudly toward the sky for a moment before she quickly backtracked. "Ah, no—I still have to take care of many little ones." Su Wanyan sighed, showing her deep dedication to her role as a pediatrician.
"Although I can’t quit my job, I’ll still take care of you and Mo Yan when I’m off from work," Su Wanyan declared, resolution clear in her voice. "When I get home, I’ll cook, clean, take care of you, take care of Mo Yan—everything! I’ll even throw the trash out. What you’ll be doing is just focus on your work and hang out with Mo Yan and me." Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she painted the future in vivid detail.
"Isn’t it perfect?" Su Wanyan asked, tugging gently at the hem of Mo Xingxue’s rust-colored dress like an eager child seeking approval.
Mo Xingxue finally blinked rapidly, snapping out of her daze. Just as she opened her mouth to respond, Su Wanyan slumped again with a dramatic sigh. "Oh, but that’s too far, right? I mean, who marries their best friend?" she oshook her head in disappointment, shoulders drooping.
The live barrage, already anticipating the dense alpha’s retreat, expressed collective disappointment:
[I already expected this, but DAYUM.]
[You.... Sigh.]
[Sigh, indeed.]
[Su Wanyan.. you dense idiot!]
[I... I... Wow, I’m beyond speechless.]
[Can someone tell Su Wanyan that there are many couples out there that started off as just "best friends"?]
[I thought Osmium was the densest thing on our planet, but it turns out that it was Su Wanyan. Science has failed us.]
[You’re a disappointment, Su Wanyan.]
Mo Xingxue finally processed the full weight of Su Wanyan’s earlier words. "What? Many people out there marry their best friend," she answered softly, referring to Su Wanyan’s self-doubt.
Su Wanyan nodded in agreement but sighed again. "Yeah, I know that, but...." Su Wanyan paused, eyes darting around nervously. "But you don’t see me that way, right? I feel like I’m just forcing my way if that ever happens," she admitted honestly, guilt flickering across her face.
Mo Xingxue blinked rapidly again, taken aback by the raw vulnerability. After a few tense seconds of silence, her laughter finally broke through—bright, warm, and full of affection. Su Wanyan felt her cheeks burn. "Hey, don’t laugh," she protested shyly, voice soft and embarrassed.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry," Mo Xingxue said, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "Whew, that’s what you’re worried about?" She cupped both of Su Wanyan’s cheeks with gentle hands, forcing the alpha to look up at her. Mo Xingxue’s phoenix eyes dripped with open adoration and love, though Su Wanyan, in her denseness, interpreted it only as fond friendship.
"It’s a valid worry," Su Wanyan mumbled, full of grievances, but she made no move to pull away from the warm touch.
Mo Xingxue laughed harder, the sound melodic and teasing. "That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard," she said, gently squishing Su Wanyan’s cheeks. Su Wanyan remained obediently still, letting Mo Xingxue play with her face without complaint.
Mo Xingxue looked at the endearing alpha before her with tender eyes. "What if I like the idea of being married to you?" Mo Xingxue asked, carefully testing the waters.
Su Wanyan revealed an innocent, questioning look that made Mo Xingxue grow braver. "What if I don’t just see you as a friend?" Mo Xingxue followed, her voice sincere and her gaze unwavering.
Su Wanyan’s eyes lit up with pure joy. "Then, of cowse I’ll mewy you!" she exclaimed, though her words were adorably muffled by Mo Xingxue still gently squishing her cheeks.
Mo Xingxue smiled, heart fluttering. "Really? When will you propose?" Mo Xingxue asked teasingly.
Thinking Mo Xingxue was simply playing along, Su Wanyan continued earnestly. She placed both her hands over Mo Xingxue’s, gently caressing them. "As soon as the filming ends, I’ll start making wedding preparations," she declared, her voice dripping with sincerity she herself wasn’t fully aware of.
Meanwhile, little Mo Yan watched the two from her stroller with a small, happy smile on her face, as if sensing the warmth blooming between her mother and the alpha who had become such an important part of their lives.
