Chapter 669: Chapter 637: Survey Report_1

"Go to the autopsy room. Director Xu and Mr. Qu will be there shortly, use that recording equipment."

Mr. Zhao slapped his forehead.

"Understood, Director Xu wants to open this up directly. Once it’s uploaded to the system, it goes straight to the provincial office, and then no one can cover it up anymore. I’ll go adjust the equipment."

The three of them entered the autopsy room, and just as they put down their things, Xu Dayuan and Mr. Qu quickly walked in. Mr. Qu came over to adjust the video equipment, directly setting it to automatically upload after recording.

Everything was ready, Xu Dayuan nodded at Mr. Qu, who then pressed the record button.

Xu Dayuan addressed Guan Jian, saying,

"Due to the urgent nature of the incident, we’ll introduce ourselves before reviewing the case files. I am Xu Dayuan, Deputy Director of the Qindao City Public Security Bureau. Here is my police badge. This is Zhao Xinli, the trace evidence examiner; this is Zhou Ning, the forensic doctor; and the last person is Guan Jian, Deputy Captain of the local criminal police team.

"Now that the introductions are complete, Zhao Xinli will start opening the case files, inventory all items, and then proceed to fingerprint and DNA extraction, with corresponding recordings."

After saying this, Xu Dayuan moved to the other side of the autopsy table. After all, it didn’t hinder their operations. Guan Jian and Mr. Qu hurried over as well, making room for Zhou Ning and the others.

Xu Dayuan’s arrangement was quite clear to Zhou Ning. If it’s proved that the victims of this case were Zhou Ning’s parents, and he was the third victim, then he would have to recuse himself, and the authenticity of the evidence would easily be called into question.

As Zhao Xinli was in charge of collecting fingerprints and DNA, the nature of the issue differed.

Shelving his thoughts, Zhou Ning looked at the case file. The first document was the investigation report, which seemed brief, just a few pages long. Mr. Zhao displayed each page, lingering on each for a few seconds, convenient for pausing and viewing.

Next were the photos from the crime scene investigation. There were a considerable number of them, starting with the bloody footprints in the hallway, the green barriers like those anti-theft doors, which were already bent, and a huge hole with singed edges in the wooden door on the inside.

In the living room, the male corpse faced the door of the south side room, prostrated on the ground, a pose matching Zhou Ning’s memory.

Zhou Ning clenched his molars tightly, then came the photos of the main bedroom, which contained many detailed shots, from the bed to the window, as well as the scene of fingerprint extraction.

It was evident that the person conducting the crime scene investigation had been very earnest, responsible, and professional.

After the photos were taken out, what followed were two autopsy reports, and all records behind the forms, reports, and photos were handwritten.

The investigation report was in one person’s handwriting, the notes behind the photos varied, and as for the autopsy reports, the writing was the neatest. They were very detailed and written extensively by the forensic doctor Zhang Guocheng, dated January 2, 2005.

It described the autopsy findings and the cause of death. The male victim died from gunshot injuries, with one gunshot wound each in the abdomen and the temporal side of the head, dead on the scene. The female victim had multiple blunt force injuries, and death was due to cervical spine dislocation and fracture.

Zhou Ning closed his eyes for a moment, suppressing the sorrow and anger in his heart.

He knew this Dr. Zhang, the local Qindao forensic doctor with a bad heart, always either in surgery or on sick leave, virtually equivalent to being retired. It was probably a desperate measure since no replacement could be found.

It was at this point that Zhou Ning realized there was no additional information, other than that relating to his parents.

He had been shot by Wang Guanli, and although the bullet grazed his scalp, he still lost a significant amount of blood. Moreover, there should have been traces he left in the box on the balcony.

Thinking of this, Zhou Ning hurriedly began to search among the photos. After finding numerous bedroom photos, but only three including the balcony, he carefully examined each one. There were no cardboard boxes or bloodstains. This discovery left Zhou Ning somewhat at a loss.

At that moment, Xu Dayuan gave Mr. Qu a look, and the recording equipment was paused.

"Zhou Ning, what’s wrong?"

Zhou Ning shook his head and glanced at the time on the investigation record, January 2, 2015. The investigator was Sun Pengfei, the witness was Hao Xin, and An Lishuai was in overall charge of the scene.

"There’s a problem right here. The crime scene investigation is missing one person’s information."

Xu Dayuan nodded and took a quick look at the last of the death information and the investigation reports, then sideways at Guan Jian.

"Who is Sun Pengfei?"

Guan Jian racked his brain, eventually pulling out an internal directory and searching through it, from the first page to the last, but there was no name Sun Pengfei listed.

"I have some recollection of this name, but exactly when I heard it, I can’t remember. He must also be one of the old hands in the criminal police team. Why don’t we ask our Mr. Fang?"

Zhou Ning looked at Xu Dayuan. They had been having a conversation in the front building, where Xu Dayuan and Mr. Qu were talking with Fang Dongsheng. If Fang Dongsheng was as forthcoming as Guan Jian, then that conversation should have already concluded. However, when Zhou Ning called him over to look at this file, he didn’t call Fang Dongsheng, which inevitably raises some questions.

Xu Dayuan fell silent for a moment, then took out his phone.

"Fang Dongsheng, come to the autopsy room in the small two-story building at the back." freēwēbnovel.com

After ending the call, Xu Dayuan indicated to Mr. Zhao to finish the video and upload it. Mr. Zhao hurried to do so, while Zhou Ning’s gaze remained fixed on Xu Dayuan, who slightly shook his head.

This motion didn’t reassure Zhou Ning. After all, Fang Dongsheng was whom he had the most contact with in Ganzhou. If Fang had a problem, wouldn’t that mean exposing himself right before the very eyes of others?

While he was pondering this, hurried footsteps sounded from afar and rapidly approached. With a push of the door, Fang Dongsheng hastily walked in.

"What’s the matter, Director Xu?"

Xu Dayuan waved his hand, and Fang Dongsheng ran up to the group.

"In the Ganzhou City Criminal Police Team, there was someone named Sun Pengfei in 1995 who signed off on a crime scene investigation. Do you recognize this person?"

Fang Dongsheng thought for a moment, then his eyes suddenly lit up.

"I remember now! We used to have a team leader named Sun Pengfei here, but when I reported for duty in 1997, he had just been transferred to the provincial city for work."

Xu Dayuan’s gaze didn’t leave Fang Dongsheng. After all, he had reviewed all the information about personnel transfers, but Sun Pengfei’s name was not on the list; Xu Dayuan remembered this distinctly.

"Oh? Then why is this person not mentioned in the personnel transfer information you provided?"

Fang Dongsheng was at a loss for an answer for a moment, then made a phone call, inquired around, and seemed to understand the reason. Holding up the photo he received on his phone, he explained to Xu Dayuan:

"After he transferred to the provincial city in 1997, he didn’t work at the provincial office. He went straight to Longyou Provincial Prison, and as for his current whereabouts, we really don’t know. We can look into it if necessary."

"Look into it. Not just him. I don’t want to repeat the past problems. I’ve told Mr. Huang Yubin that I want all the information on everyone who was transferred out. Don’t tell me that just because someone isn’t in the public security system—or even if they’ve passed away—I still want to know when it happened. The list can’t be missing anyone; otherwise, our work is in vain."

Sweat appeared on Fang Dongsheng’s forehead; he could feel Xu Dayuan’s anger. Director Xu usually had a smile on his face, but he was so stern now, it made one tremble all over.

"Mr. Huang instructed us before he left; I’m not looking for excuses, the most important thing now is to get the complete list. I’ll personally go tell them right now."

Xu Dayuan didn’t speak. Fang Dongsheng wiped his forehead and quickly walked out; Guan Jian was so scared he hardly dared to breathe, while Mr. Zhao, on the other hand, casually approached.

"Boss, I think we should just check the list of staff during that time period directly. I’ll go over it and try to quickly get the list. Regardless of where people are, we need to know immediately where they are."

Xu Dayuan gestured with his hand and saw that Zhou Ning was still staring at that dossier. He lifted his hand and patted Zhou Ning’s shoulder.

"Zhou Xiaozhou, don’t worry, we’ll definitely get to the bottom of it. Also, haven’t you cleared out a lot of archival dossiers? Those that weren’t handed over to the archives—have Zhu Xingxing and his team clean those up once they’re done. I think there might be some findings in there."

Zhou Ning nodded, knowing these words were meant to comfort him. The dossier was very well preserved; the rubber band sealing it was aged, showing no signs of being opened. All this indicated that the crime scene investigation from that time was just as much as was in front of them now. Of course, more might have been submitted, but those were lost.

After thinking it over, Zhou Ning lifted his head.

"Before Cao Wenyu, who managed the archives? And was there an original record of the relocation at that time? If the dossier went missing during Cao Wenyu’s tenure, we could start an investigation." freēwēbnovel.com

Xu Dayuan looked at Guan Jian, who felt like crying. Just now Fang Dongsheng had been reprimanded severely enough to scare him, and now everyone was looking at him, making Guan Jian’s limbs go numb.

"Director Xu, Director Zhou, Cao Wenyu and I reported for duty together. Before her, there was an archivist, an old comrade. I remember when I first came here, the old comrade was honored as an advanced worker. There was a report meeting in the auditorium, and he detailed everything.

He talked about when the Ganzhou City Public Security Bureau archives were established, and that he had worked there since then, and gave details about the inventory of archived records. For instance, how many documents were permanent, how many were long-term, how many were short-term, the amount of physical evidence, information, and so on..."

Xu Dayuan raised his hand, cutting him off, obviously trying hard to control his temper.

"What’s his name, and where is he?"

Guan Jian tried to force a grin, but the expression was quite terrifying.

"I remember his name; he is called Zhu Jianguo. He retired in 2006, and he lives in the same neighborhood as our family. You can see him in the morning taking walks; the old man’s in great shape. His son works at the Ganzhou City courthouse."

As he spoke, Guan Jian quieted down and raised his phone to dial a number.

"Hey brother, it’s Guan Jian. Nah, it’s not to invite you for a drink; I have an urgent matter and need to find our old man. Is he home? Our boss would like to visit and ask him about things related to the archives from decades ago. Okay, I’ll go straight to the old man’s place; yeah, yeah, send me the number afterward and we’ll have a drink when I’m free."

After hanging up the phone, before Guan Jian could speak, Xu Dayuan was already gesturing to Zhou Ning, grabbing Guan Jian’s arm.

"Let’s go meet this old gentleman."

As they left, Mr. Zhao and Fang Dongsheng returned just in time to see them heading out, looking puzzled.

"What’s up, boss?"

"Come on, let’s all go see someone."
