Chapter 140: Chapter 139: Girlfriend’s Fiancé [Happy National Day! First Update]_1
"Hehe!"
Mr. Zhao grinned foolishly twice and lifted the car key to reveal a sticker on the back with a four-digit code written on it.
"What’s to look at, this Yu Meili is rich. She wouldn’t care about these small things. It’s said that where you stand determines what you see. She might value Sun Manqing’s abilities. Otherwise, who would want to get involved in such a complicated relationship? As for this, she probably doesn’t even remember it herself. The password is on the back of the car key, right?"
Zhou Ning handed him an evidence bag, and Mr. Zhao quickly tossed the lock into it.
As the roller shutter was lifted, Mr. Zhao hastily collected fingerprints from both inside and outside of it. It was easy to spot the traces of where it had been grasped due to a layer of dust, with only a few clean fingerprint marks. The cleanliness indicated that someone had opened the door recently.
"The door was opened recently!"
As the roller shutter was completely opened, Zhou Ning held up his phone to examine the garage. A deep grey Honda CR-V was parked quietly inside, and Mr. Zhao turned on a switch on the wall with a snap, illuminating the entire garage.
With that, the three of them immediately noticed impact marks on the front part of the car.
There were also traces of a collision on the garage wall. Mr. Zhao clicked his tongue, clearly annoyed by such behavior from someone who loved cars.
"Are they an idiot? How could they crash into the wall while parking? Look, look, the front headlights are smashed."
Zhou Ning walked over for a closer look and found a red paint scratch on the upper part of the left headlight. Zhou Ning tried to rub it off but couldn’t, narrowing his eyes slightly.
"Crashing inside the garage probably means the accident marks were staged. Let’s get to work, Mr. Zhao. Collect fingerprints, drive the car out, and then look for those magnetic patches on the car, shall we?"
Mr. Zhao paused, nodded promptly, and began to collect fingerprints on the driver’s and passenger’s side doors while moving the car back a bit. The three started searching and soon found a paper bag in the glove box on passenger’s side, containing several magnetic numbers.
"It matches with Xu Da. It seems that at the accident scene, this car was the last one to crash."
Xu Dayuan nodded and gestured to Mr. Zhao.
"Sample the impact marks too. Leave the car here for now; I’ll arrange for somebody to tow it away. Hurry up with the fingerprint comparison. I’m going back for the interrogation now."
Mr. Zhao came over with a reminder.
"Isn’t Zhang Guanglei’s current girlfriend living in this complex too?"
Xu Dayuan patted Mr. Zhao’s shoulder, causing him to shiver.
"What’s up?"
"Not bad, you’re quite useful. Let’s head up. It’s Building No. 2, this time it’s Unit 6, Room 1203."
Grumbling, Mr. Zhao hurriedly packed up, as Xu Dayuan had already called someone to tow the car.
The three went upstairs. Mr. Zhao, with a strong sense of direction, directly found the elevator for Unit 6 and went up to the twelfth floor. He rang the doorbell and waited a long time before someone leaned against the door and asked. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"Who is it?"
Xu Dayuan held up his police badge to the peephole, shaking it and speaking to the inside:
"It’s the Criminal Police. Please, open the door."
The door was opened, but only a crack. An elderly woman peered out, looking guarded.
"Are you the police?"
"Yes, is Wang Wenjing at home?"
The elderly woman nodded.
"Wang Wenjing is here, but she’s sick. You all..."
The woman seemed uneasy. Xu Dayuan was polite.
"Are you a caregiver hired by Wang Wenjing or her mother? I know Wang Wenjing is receiving medical care, but we need to inquire about a case. Don’t worry, we will not trouble you or Wang Wenjing."
Only then did the elderly woman nod and let go of the door.
"I’m her mother. Come on in, then."
The three entered the room, which was not as large as Yu Meili’s three-bedroom place, just a standard two-bedroom apartment with small windows, but it was tidy. Mr. Zhao politely asked:
"Auntie, do we need to change shoes?"
The old lady shook her head.
"Come in, it’s not that formal."
Just then, a shout came from inside the room.
"Mom, who is it? Ask clearly before opening the door."
The old lady hastily pushed the door open and entered the master bedroom. The three of them didn’t rush to follow, considering that the woman was recovering at home; in such hot weather, she might not be fully dressed, so they should give her time to put on clothes.
Soon there was the rustling of movement inside the room. After the old lady quietly introduced the guests to the woman, Wang Wenjing then called out towards the door:
"Please come in!"
The three walked into the master bedroom, which was only about fourteen square meters, containing a bed, a wardrobe, a dressing table, and two chairs, occupying most of the space. Wang Wenjing was lying on the bed, with her right leg wrapped in a plaster and propped up on the blanket, evidently just put on her nightgown, except that the pants were cut down to half of a leg.
When they went in, Wang Wenjing adjusted her neckline and then raised her hand to tidy her hair. The woman was very petite, not reaching 155 cm in height, which is considered very short in the Ludong Region. She was extremely thin as well, but she didn’t look like a forty-year-old. She had fair skin, a small nose, and Phoenix eyes that were quite distinctive.
"Please sit down. Are you looking for me?"
Xu Dayuan nodded and, without being polite, directly took a seat. The old lady brought another stool, which Mr. Zhao quickly took and offered to Zhou Ning, who sat on another chair. Mr. Zhao turned on the bodycam, and the old lady stood in front of Wang Wenjing, displaying a protective demeanor.
"We’re here to understand the situation. Do you know Zhang Guanglei?"
Wang Wenjing nodded slightly, also glancing at the old lady.
"I know him. We dated, on and off for over two years, but my mother didn’t approve. She thought the age gap was too large, and my child didn’t accept it either.
Before Qingming, I called him and officially broke up with him. After pestering me a few times, he didn’t come over again. Then I found another boyfriend, and we were planning to get married. We originally planned to marry in August, but now the wedding will probably have to be postponed due to my injury."
Toward the end, Wang Wenjing slightly bowed her head, making her seem even more fragile. In just a few sentences, she made it very clear about her relationship with Zhang Guanglei.
She was aiming for a second marriage, and although Zhang Guanglei was good, he was younger.
Both her mother and child disapproved, their relationship grew distant, and now it’s over. After all, she referred to him as someone she had dated, not as a boyfriend; she felt regretful.
Xu Dayuan nodded slightly and continued:
"When did you get injured?"
"Yesterday morning, after dropping off my child, I took a shortcut to the store and got clipped by an electric bike, which resulted in me falling and injuring my leg. By the time I came to, the person had already run off. I called my boyfriend, and he drove me to the hospital. It wasn’t severe, just a fractured bone, so I got a cast and came back to recuperate."
"Do you remember what time you got injured yesterday?"
Wang Wenjing reached for her mobile phone on the nightstand, looked through the call log, and held it up for Xu Dayuan to see.
"I’m not exactly sure of the time I fell, probably before 7:00 AM. I took my child to school at 6:10, then went to her lunch place because we hadn’t paid this month’s fee yet. I waited for the teacher for a while, so I guess it was just under seven o’clock.
When I recovered, some passersby came by and asked if I needed to call the police. I remember two elderly men saying that there are no surveillance cameras at this intersection, so calling the police wouldn’t do much good. After thanking those who offered to help, I called my boyfriend."
Xu Dayuan glanced at the time, and Zhou Ning also peeked at it. It was marked 7:18, with only a phone number, no name. Someone who could be thought of in an emergency must have more than a casual relationship, and the lack of a name marked was odd.
Zhou Ning frowned slightly, and Xu Dayuan gave a nod of his chin, clearly signaling that he should speak up if he had any thoughts. Zhou Ning didn’t hold back, staring at Wang Wenjing to ask:
"Your current boyfriend?"
Wang Wenjing was clearly stunned, not expecting Zhou Ning to question her so directly. She shifted her gaze and slowly nodded.
"Yes, to be precise, my fiancé. As I mentioned earlier, we were supposed to get married in August. I just changed to this number, and I haven’t had time to save it."
"Tell us the information; we need to verify it. And which hospital did you go to? Who accompanied you during the consultation?"
Wang Wenjing paused, her brows furrowed, clearly very resistant to such a string of questions.
"I don’t think I’ve done anything illegal. Why are you asking me these personal questions? What is the meaning of this? At one point it’s about Zhang Guanglei, then it’s the time I got injured, and now it’s about my fiancé. What exactly do you want to ask?"
Xu Dayuan once again lifted his police badge and shook it towards Wang Wenjing.
"We’re not community police from a local station; we’re from the Criminal Investigation Division. Zhang Guanglei is dead. We need to understand the whereabouts and motives of everyone who knew him. So, answer each question honestly. Only if we can clear you of suspicion can your life remain undisturbed. Do you understand?"
Wang Wenjing shivered, and her phone fell to the ground. The old lady quickly picked it up, steadying the shaky Wang Wenjing. Judging by her shocked expression, she was quite frightened.
"He’s dead? How did he die?"
The old lady also shivered, clearly as surprised by the news as her daughter. Mr. Zhao, off to the side with a soft voice, muttered,
"Aren’t you already engaged to someone else? Why so agitated?"
