Chapter 55: The Void Grows

The eyes changed again at 3am.

Not the color. Not the depth. The range. Ryuji was standing against the wall in the bedroom. The void-dark eyes open. Calibrating in the dark the way they always did. The darkness helping the void adjust to the space between seeing and not seeing.

Then the wall disappeared.

Not physically. Visually. The plaster and lath and stone that separated the bedroom from the hallway became transparent. Not see-through. Absent. The void in his eyes negated the visual obstruction. The wall was still there. His eyes just didn’t acknowledge it.

He could see the hallway. The stone floor. The crystal light dimmed to night mode. The runner carpet Alexei had brought from the Dominion. The sword rack on the wall. The repaired doorframe. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

He blinked. The wall returned. Solid. Present. The void disengaging.

He looked again. The wall disappeared. The hallway returned. He could see the kitchen beyond. The counter. The stove. The coffee cups lined up by the sink. The bread Helda had left for morning.

He blinked. The wall returned.

"The void is showing me through walls," he said to nobody.

Nobody didn’t answer. But the void did. The depth in his irises shifted. Expanding. The range increasing. The wall disappeared again. Then the hallway wall. Then the kitchen wall. Then the courtyard beyond. Then the estate wall. Then the forest beyond.

He could see everything.

Not clearly. The distant objects were impressions. Shapes. Energy signatures. The way the void in his eyes read the world wasn’t like normal vision. It was like reading heat. Like reading pressure. Like reading the weight of things on the space they occupied.

The forest was a map of energy. Trees as columns of biological force. Animals as small moving points. The ley lines as rivers of light running through the ground. The void-scarred area near the estate as a dark patch. A hole in the map. The place where the energy had been removed.

He could see Renka in the north watchtower. A warm shape. Gray-furred. The heartbeat visible as a pulse of amber light in her chest. Seventy-two beats per minute. The resting rate of a wolf-kin scout on night watch.

He could see Alexei in the south quarters. A larger shape. Crimson glow. The heartbeat at fifty-eight. The deep sleep rhythm of a demon prince who had stopped patrolling at midnight and fallen asleep on his armor again.

He could see the families in their shelters. Small shapes. Warm. The children’s heartbeats faster. The parents’ slower. The rhythms of people sleeping in a place they’d decided was safe.

He could see Maren in her room. The scholar awake at 3am. Writing. Always writing. The heartbeat at sixty-four. The slightly elevated rate of a mind that never stopped processing.

He could see Elara in her room. The handler asleep. The clipboard on the nightstand. The heartbeat at sixty-one. The first restful sleep she’d had since arriving because the estate had stopped being an assignment and started being a place.

He could see Ash under the kitchen table. The wolf pup curled. Three legs tucked. One ear folded. The heartbeat at eighty-eight. The fast rhythm of a small creature dreaming about bones and pancakes and the hand that fed it.

He could see Brokk in the workshop. The dwarf asleep at his desk. The clipboard under his cheek. The heartbeat at fifty-one. The slow rhythm of a craftsman who had built until his body demanded rest.

He could see the spy in the forest. A cold shape. Violet eyes. The heartbeat at sixty-six. The elevated rate of a professional who never fully rested.

He could see everything.

The village. The territory. The home. Every heartbeat. Every breath. Every sleeping body and waking mind. The void in his eyes had expanded his perception beyond the walls. Beyond the estate. Beyond the limits of human vision into the space where everything was visible and nothing could hide.

Then he looked at her.

Selene. In the bed. Asleep. Her hand on his pillow. The position she’d chosen when he wasn’t there. Her heartbeat at fifty-three. The number that meant close. The number that meant one beat apart.

He could see her aura. The violet glow. Always present. Always warm. The power she’d carried her entire life. The weapon that had become a gift. The force that had brought him back from death.

And underneath. The void trace. Dark. Deep. The thing that had erupted in the garden. The thing that lived in her blood. The thing her father had spent four centuries cultivating. The thing that was now woven into her aura like thread into fabric.

He could see it clearly. For the first time. The void in her and the void in him. Connected. The same energy. The same frequency. The same depth. A bridge of nothing between two people who were both vessels for the same fire.

The bridge was visible. A dark thread running from his eyes to her chest. From his scar to her aura. The void linking them. Not because they’d chosen it. Because the void had chosen them. Because the fire needed two vessels. Because the nothing that held the everything was too vast for one person.

He pulled back. The walls returned. The village disappeared. The eyes normalized. The void settling. The range contracting. The vision returning to normal.

She stirred.

"Your eyes," she murmured. Not waking. Not sleeping. The space between.

"They expanded."

"Expanded."

"I can see through walls now."

"Good."

"Good?"

"Less chance of you walking into furniture."

"I’ve never walked into furniture."

"You walked into the kitchen counter yesterday."

"The counter was moved."

"The counter has been in the same spot for thirty-nine days."

"The counter was moved three centimeters left."

"By WHO."

"By Brokk. When he expanded the kitchen."

"Brokk expanded the kitchen a WEEK ago."

"The counter moved slowly."

"You’re telling me a kitchen counter moved three centimeters in a week and you noticed with your void eyes."

"I notice everything."

"That’s terrifying."

"It’s efficient."

"It’s TERRIFYING."

She turned over. The blanket shifting. Her violet eyes opening. The demon princess looking at her husband who could now see through walls and was using this ability to track kitchen counter positions.

"What else can you see," she asked.

"Heartbeats."

"Through walls."

"Through everything. I can see Renka in the watchtower. Seventy-two. Alexei in his room. Fifty-eight. The children in the shelters. Fast. The wolf pup. Eighty-eight."

"Mine."

"Fifty-three."

"Always fifty-three."

"Always."

"What about the spy."

"Sixty-six. Elevated. She never fully rests."

"You can see the spy’s heartbeat from the bedroom."

"I can see the spy’s heartbeat from anywhere in the estate."

"That’s a surveillance upgrade."

"That’s a void upgrade."

"What else."

"The ley lines. They’re visible now. Rivers of light in the ground. The void scar shows as a dark patch. A hole where the light used to be."

"The ley lines are VISIBLE."

"To the void eyes. Everything is visible. Energy. Force. Pressure. Weight. The void doesn’t see surfaces. It sees substance. What things are made of. What things cost. What things hold."

"What am I made of."

He looked at her. The void-dark eyes engaging. The depth expanding. The woman in the bed becoming the most visible thing in the world. Not her body. Her substance. Her energy. Her force.

"You’re made of violet," he said.

"Violet."

"Everywhere. The aura. The bloodline. The void trace. It’s all violet. The same color. The same frequency. You’re consistent."

"I’m CONSISTENT."

"Down to the cellular level."

"You can see my CELLS."

"I can see the energy your cells produce. The pattern. The structure. The violet is uniform. There are no gaps. No weaknesses. No inconsistencies."

"You’re telling me I’m structurally perfect."

"I’m telling you the void sees you as complete."

"Complete."

"Every part of you is present. Accounted for. Whole. The void doesn’t find weaknesses in you because there are no weaknesses to find."

"Ryuji."

"The void sees everything as a structure. Every person has gaps. Weak points. Places where the energy is thinner. I can see them in everyone. Renka has a thin spot in her left knee. Old injury. Alexei has a dense knot in his right shoulder. Combat damage. Maren has low energy in her lower back. Too many hours sitting."

"And me."

"No gaps."

"None."

"None."

She was quiet. The bedroom. The darkness. The man with void-dark eyes telling the demon princess that the void saw her as complete. Whole. The thing her father had tried to shape into a vessel was already a finished thing.

"You see everything," she said.

"I see everything."

"Through walls. Through people. Through the ground."

"Through everything."

"Can you see the Demon King."

"Not yet. He’s too far. The range is limited. Maybe five kilometers. Maybe more. It’s growing."

"Growing."

"Every day the void expands. The eyes adjust. The range increases. When I first activated, I could see structure. Cracks. Weak points. Now I can see through walls. Through barriers. Through distance."

"How far will it go."

"I don’t know."

"Could you see the Human Kingdom."

"Not yet."

"Could you see the Dominion."

"Not yet."

"Could you see my father."

"Not yet."

"But eventually."

"Eventually."

She sat up. The blanket falling. The demon princess processing the fact that her husband’s void eyes were expanding toward the ability to see across kingdoms.

"You could see everything," she said.

"I could."

"Every person. Every heartbeat. Every weakness."

"I could."

"That’s more powerful than anything the System measures."

"The System measures power. The void measures substance. They’re different things."

"The void measures MORE."

"The void measures deeper."

"You could see the kings."

"Eventually."

"You could see their weaknesses."

"I could."

"You could see their heartbeats."

"I could."

"You could see what they’re made of."

"I could."

"And what are they made of."

He was quiet. The void-dark eyes on the woman in the bed. The question hanging. The question that asked what the void would show when it looked at the most powerful men in Avarthos.

"I don’t know yet," he said. "But I’ll find out."

"When."

"When they come."

"When they BOTH come."

"When they both come."

She lay back down. Her hand on his pillow. Her heartbeat at fifty-three. His at fifty-two. One beat apart.

"Can you see what I’m thinking," she said.

"The void sees energy. Not thoughts."

"Good."

"Why good."

"Because if you could see my thoughts you’d know what I think about your pancakes."

"I already know what you think about my pancakes."

"You do NOT."

"Nine out of ten. Always nine. Never ten. Because ten would mean perfection and perfection would mean you’d have nothing to argue about."

"I argue about EVERYTHING."

"You argue about everything because arguing is how you love."

"That is the most presumptuous thing you’ve ever said."

"It’s accurate."

"I HATE when you’re accurate."

"Noted."

"DON’T ’noted’ me at 3am."

"It’s allocated."

"THE WORDS ARE NOT ALLOCATED AT 3AM."

"In this estate, allocation is 24/7."

"I’m going back to sleep."

"Good."

"On YOUR pillow."

"Good."

"Because it smells like you."

"Good."

"STOP saying good."

"What should I say."

"Say goodnight."

"Goodnight, Selene."

"Goodnight, Ryuji."

Her heartbeat settled. Fifty-three. The rhythm of sleep returning. The demon princess falling asleep on her husband’s pillow because it smelled like him. The void in his eyes tracking her descent into rest. The energy dimming. The aura softening. The violet glow becoming the gentle lavender of deep sleep.

He stood against the wall. The eyes normalizing. The village settling. The heartbeats counting. The night holding.

He could see everything now.

Through walls. Through distance. Through the barriers that separated people from each other.

But the thing he looked at most.

Was her.
