Chapter 28: The Battle
The north wall held first.
Renka called it from the watchtower. Her voice through the crystal. Sharp. Professional. The scout who turned into a weapon when the work was real.
"North trio engaging. Three demon lords. Moving through the infantry. They’re using the soldiers as cover."
Ryuji’s voice came back from the center. Flat. Calm.
"Let them approach. Don’t engage until they’re within fifty meters."
"Fifty meters is close."
"Fifty meters is the kill zone. Their formation opens at close range. The trio separates. That’s when you take them."
"I’m a scout. I don’t take demon lords."
"You don’t fight them. You redirect them. The watchtower gives you height. Use it. Call the angles. Force them into the wall’s defensive positions."
"Redirect three demon lords."
"With your voice."
"MY VOICE."
"Call the positions. They’ll respond to perceived threats. If you call a threat on their left, they’ll shift. That shift creates a gap. The gap is where the wall’s defenses engage."
"You want me to trick demon lords with WORDS."
"I want you to be the eyes. The wall does the work."
Renka’s ears rotated. The wolf-kin processing a strategy that used her voice as a weapon and a wall as a sword.
"Engaging," she said.
The north trio hit the wall at 7:23pm.
The east wall followed at 7:25.
Two fronts. Simultaneous. The Obsidian Circle coordinating with the precision of lords who had fought together for centuries.
Renka covered both. The watchtower position gave her visibility on the north and east approaches. Her voice became the estate’s nervous system. Calling positions. Calling distances. Calling the shifts that created gaps.
"East trio. Two hundred meters. Moving fast. One lord breaking right."
"Let him break," Ryuji said. "The east wall has a blind spot at the corner. He’ll enter it. When he does, the reinforced section drops."
"Drops?"
"Brokk built a counterweight. If the corner section is struck with enough force, it releases. The wall section falls outward."
"You built a TRAP WALL."
"I built an adaptive defense system."
"IT’S A TRAP WALL."
"Call the position."
"East lord entering the blind spot. Now."
The sound came through the crystal. Stone moving. The crack of a counterweight releasing. A six-foot section of the east wall dropping outward. Two tons of reinforced stone falling onto the demon lord below.
The lord caught it. Barely. His arms up. His aura flaring. The stone hovering above him. His strength holding two tons of demon-forged masonry.
"HOLD THE STONE," Renka called. Not to the lord. To Brokk. The dwarf who had built the trap. "SECOND COUNTERWEIGHT."
A second release. Another section. Four tons total. The lord’s arms buckled. His aura screamed. His knees hit the ground.
"East lord neutralized," Renka said. "Temporarily. He’ll recover in minutes."
"Minutes is enough," Ryuji said. "Focus north."
The south wall erupted at 7:30.
Alexei didn’t wait for orders.
The demon prince saw the trio climbing the slope and his body made the decision his mind had been suppressing for twenty-six days. Four centuries of combat instinct overriding the plan. Overriding the order to hold position. Overriding everything except the thing that lived in his blood.
He jumped.
Off the wall. Eight feet. Down the slope. Into the three demon lords.
The first lord saw him coming. Raised a blade. Alexei’s sword met it with the force of a falling building. The impact cracked the slope. The lord’s blade shattered. The body behind it crumpled.
"ALEXEI," Ryuji’s voice through the crystal. "HOLD POSITION."
"HOLDING."
"You’re OFF the wall."
"I’m holding the position BELOW the wall."
"That’s NOT your position."
"It’s ADJACENT to my position."
The second lord attacked from the right. Alexei rotated. His body shifting the way Ryuji had taught him. The weight flowing instead of fighting. The momentum carrying into a strike that took the lord across the chest. The armor held. The body behind it didn’t. The lord flew backward twenty feet and didn’t get up.
The third lord was smarter. Older. His aura was a wall of dark energy. The kind of wall that had ended battles.
Alexei hit it with his own.
The two auras collided. Crimson versus dark. The slope cracked further. Trees bent. The air screamed. The demon prince and the demon lord pushing against each other with the weight of centuries.
Alexei’s eye twitched.
"Yield," Alexei said.
"I don’t yield to princes."
"I’m not asking as a prince."
He pushed harder. The aura battle shifting. The lord’s wall bending. The demon prince who had been trained by a classless human to use his own structure instead of fighting it. The weight shift. The flow. The momentum.
The lord’s wall broke.
Alexei’s blade found his shoulder. The lord dropped. Not dead. Defeated. The demon prince standing over a fallen lord on a slope below a wall he’d been told to hold and hadn’t. freewёbnoνel.com
"South trio neutralized," Alexei said through the crystal. "All three."
"YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD THE WALL."
"I held the ground."
"THE GROUND IS NOT THE WALL."
"The ground is adjacent to the wall."
"I’m going to kill you."
"After the battle."
The west wall was quiet.
Too quiet.
Selene stood on the stone. Moon blade ready. Violet eyes scanning the garden approach. The flower beds. The hedgerow. The fresh soil.
No infantry. No lords. No movement.
"West status," Ryuji said through the crystal.
"Nothing."
"Nothing?"
"No movement. No approach. The garden is empty."
"That’s not right."
"I know."
"Zerathis wouldn’t leave the west unattended."
"I know."
"He’s waiting."
"For what."
"For you to move. He wants you to leave the wall. Come help another position. Create the gap."
"I’m not moving."
"Good."
"I can feel him watching."
"Don’t look at the hill."
"I’m not looking."
"Your aura is spiking."
"I know. He’s provoking it. From the hill. His aura is reaching across the field. Pressing against mine. Testing."
"Don’t engage."
"I won’t."
"Selene."
"I WON’T."
She held the wall. The moon blade humming. The violet eyes burning. The demon princess who could feel a demon lord’s gaze on her back and was choosing not to turn around.
The west wall held.
The center.
Ryuji stood in the courtyard. The communication crystal in his hand. Four walls reporting. Four positions holding.
"North trio down," Renka said. "Temporary. They’re regrouping."
"East lord still pinned," she continued. "Counterweight holding."
"South trio neutralized," Alexei said. "All three. On the ground."
"West quiet," Selene said. "Zerathis watching. No engagement."
The plan was working. The walls held. The trios were contained. The infantry couldn’t breach the stone. The lords were pinned or defeated. The estate’s defense was functioning exactly as designed.
Something was wrong.
Ryuji felt it. Not in the crystal reports. Not in the wall status. In the space between the data. The gap in the pattern. The thing the machinery couldn’t calculate.
Zerathis hadn’t committed.
Three hundred infantry. Twelve demon lords. A full army at the walls. And the demon lord on the hill hadn’t moved. Hadn’t engaged. Hadn’t done anything except watch.
This wasn’t an attack.
This was a test.
"Fall back," Ryuji said into the crystal.
"What?" Renka said.
"All positions fall back. Inside the walls. Now."
"We’re WINNING."
"This isn’t the attack. This is reconnaissance. Zerathis is testing our defenses. Our positions. Our capabilities. He’s mapping us."
"Mapping us?"
"Every lord we’ve engaged has transmitted information back to him. Our wall traps. Our aura ranges. Our combat patterns. He’s building a playbook."
"Then we--"
"FALL BACK. NOW."
The crystal hummed. Four walls. Four people. The order sinking in.
"North falling back," Renka said.
"South falling back," Alexei said. Reluctantly.
"West holding," Selene said.
"Selene. Fall back."
"The west is quiet. I can hold."
"If this is reconnaissance, the west is the setup. Zerathis has been watching your wall all night. He’s been waiting for you to commit. To lean forward. To engage."
"I haven’t engaged."
"Your aura has been flaring. Every time he presses. He’s measuring your range. Your response time. Your power output."
"Then I stop flaring."
"You CAN’T stop flaring. He’s provoking your emotional response. Every spike gives him data."
"Then what do I DO."
"Fall back. Come inside. Let the wall be a wall."
"I’m not leaving my wall."
"Selene."
"I’m NOT leaving."
"Selene, listen to me. He doesn’t want the estate. He doesn’t want the walls. He wants YOU. Every move tonight has been about YOU. The west company. The quiet approach. The aura pressure. All of it designed to keep your attention. To keep you on the wall. To keep you exposed."
"Exposed to what."
"To HIM."
The crystal went quiet. The west wall. The garden below. The hill in the distance. The demon lord watching.
"Fall back," Ryuji said. Quieter. The voice that wasn’t tactical. The voice that was personal. The voice of a man asking the woman he loved to come inside before the thing he couldn’t predict happened.
"Fine," she said. "Falling back."
She stepped off the wall. Her feet touched the courtyard stone. The moon blade still manifested. Her eyes still on the garden.
She made it three steps.
The sky split.
Not lightning. Not thunder. A beam of dark energy. Concentrated. Targeted. Coming from the hill. From Zerathis. From the demon lord who had been watching all night and had waited for the exact moment Selene’s feet touched the ground.
The beam hit the west wall.
Not the top. The base. The foundation Brokk had built. The stone and demon-forged steel that had taken three weeks to construct. The beam hit it and the wall exploded.
Not crumbled. Exploded. Two tons of stone and metal erupting outward. The shockwave hit the courtyard. Selene was thrown forward. Her aura flared automatically. The protective dome. The same dome that had made armies kneel.
The beam adjusted. Followed her. The dark energy tracking her position. Zerathis’s power. The demon lord’s full force. Concentrated into a single point of destruction aimed at the woman he’d wanted for decades.
"SELENE," Ryuji’s voice through the crystal.
She was on her feet. The moon blade raised. Her aura a wall. The beam pressing against it. The force enormous. The kind of force that leveled cities. The kind of force that a demon lord spent centuries building.
She held.
The most powerful demon princess in Avarthos holding back the full power of a demon lord with nothing but her aura and her will.
The beam pushed. She pushed back. The courtyard cracking beneath her feet. The air screaming. The crystal in Ryuji’s hand shattering from the feedback.
"SELENE."
She couldn’t hear him. The crystal was dead. The sound was overwhelming. The force was overwhelming. Her aura was holding but her body was straining. The energy cost enormous. The reserves draining.
She held.
For ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty.
The beam stopped.
Silence.
The west wall was gone. A crater where the foundation had been. Stone dust settling. The garden exposed. The flower beds destroyed. The fresh soil scattered.
On the hill, Zerathis lowered his hand.
He’d never intended to breach the estate. He’d intended to break the wall. To show her his power. To show her that he could reach her anywhere. To show her that the estate she’d built with a classless human was nothing against the force of a demon lord who had wanted her for decades.
He’d shown her.
Now he was retreating. The army withdrawing. The Obsidian Circle pulling back. The test complete.
"Status," Ryuji said through a backup crystal. His voice different. Not flat. Tight. The voice of a man who had just watched the woman he loved get hit by the most powerful force in the Dominion.
"West wall destroyed," Selene said. Her voice steady. Her body shaking. "I’m fine."
"You’re not fine."
"I’m STANDING."
"Your reserves."
"Low."
"How low."
"Thirty percent."
She’d burned seventy percent of her energy holding back one attack. One beam. From one demon lord. At a distance.
"The wall is gone," she said.
"We’ll rebuild it."
"The garden is exposed."
"We’ll fix it."
"HE’S RETREATING."
"I know."
"He WANTED me to see. He wanted me to know he could reach me."
"He can’t reach you. You held."
"BARELY."
"Barely counts."
"BARELY DOES NOT COUNT."
She was shaking. Full body. The aftermath of holding seventy percent of her energy against a demon lord’s full power. Her hands trembling. Her aura flickering. Her legs unsteady.
He caught her.
His arm around her waist. The other hand on her back. The man with no class and no level holding the most powerful demon princess in Avarthos while she shook in the courtyard of a home that had just lost a wall.
"I’ve got you," he said.
"I don’t need --"
"I’ve got you."
She pressed her face into his chest. The wrinkled shirt. The heartbeat underneath. Fifty-two. Steady. The number that meant safe. The number that held while everything else fell.
"The wall," she murmured.
"Brokk will rebuild."
"The garden."
"We’ll fix it."
"Zerathis."
"Will regret it."
She looked up at him. The violet eyes dim. Exhausted. The woman who had just held back the most powerful demon lord in the Dominion with nothing but her aura.
"He’s stronger than I thought," she said.
"He tested you. That’s all. A test."
"A test that destroyed a wall."
"A test he won’t get to repeat."
"How do you know."
"Because now we know his range. His power. His approach. He showed us everything tonight."
"He showed us he can destroy us."
"He showed us he has to get through YOU first. And you held."
"Barely."
"You held."
She pressed her face deeper. His heartbeat in her ear. The shaking slowing. The warmth of him against the cold of the night.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Tomorrow."
"He’ll come again."
"He’ll come again."
"With more."
"With everything."
"Can we hold?"
He was quiet. The courtyard. The dust. The crater where the west wall had been. The garden exposed. The flower beds destroyed.
"We hold," he said.
"How."
"Together."
