At this point, everyone’s expression darkened. Things were more complicated than they thought. However, there was something that was certain. Something was wrong with Xiang Nan. She was already unhinged when she was still alive. Both her husbands and children had suspicious deaths. She was related to all.
And this so-called prediction.
17th October. What happened on that day?
“When did Xiang Nan’s first husband die?” Jiang Cheng turned to Kui Yi. He was the one who researched Xiang Nan the most.
“I can’t remember the details, but it was in October,” Kui Yi confirmed.
Another October…
“It should be before October 17th,” Jiang Cheng thought about it, “I believe her first husband sensed that something was wrong. However, he chose to commit suicide before the date. Yi Zhenliang was more direct. He murdered Xiang Nan to end the prediction from the source.”
Since no one said anything, Yu Yu whispered, “What kind of prediction would force two men to do something drastic?”
“It’s simple.” Jiang Cheng put away the paper and glanced at Yu Yu. “If the prediction came true, they would face something worse than death.”
Wang Changguo’s face paled. “Worse than death… What could be worse than death?” He didn’t get it. Most of the travellers didn’t. However, Jiang Cheng couldn’t figure out another answer. They still lacked key information. What happened on October 17th? This was directly related to whether they could live.
Cao Yang groused, “Unfortunately, everyone who knows the truth is dead. Zhao Ru might know something, but she clearly won’t help us.”
“There’s one more person.” Yu Yu offered, “Director Qi, we can call him. Considering the situation, he…”
“No,” Jiang Cheng denied it.
“Why not?”
Jiang Cheng turned to Yu Yu. “Have you considered why Director Qi hasn’t shown up thus far?”
“He’s in hiding,” Yu Yu answered. From the looks of things, Director Qi was Zhao Ru’s biological father. Based on the endings of Xiang Nan’s two husbands, he was the ghost’s next target.
“That’s why we need to contact him, so we can protect him.” The endless disappointments sent Wang Changguo spiralling. He took out his phone. “Which of you has his number? I’ll call him. This is his fault. Why would he dump us here? If we’re to die, no one is escaping alive!”
“Idiot!” Kui Yi snatched his phone and scolded, “If you want to die, do it alone. Don’t drag us with you!”
Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes and glanced at Wang Changguo. The latter wanted to roar back, but he stopped himself when he sensed Jiang Cheng’s gaze. In the end, he only glared at Kui Yi.
“Once you make that call, it might expose Director Qi’s location. Once the ghost finds him, the game is over,” Jiang Cheng explained.
Wang Changguo finally realised he had almost killed everyone. He put his phone away. “We can’t do this, and we can’t do that. What can we do?”
The clues ended there. The investigation brought up nothing. Jiang Cheng turned to look down the corridor. The lights were still on. “There’s one more person who knows the truth,” Jiang Cheng revealed, “The former director, Zhang Zhaowei.” Based on what he had done, Jiang Cheng knew that Zhang Zhaowei carried some secrets.
Cao Yang gasped, “But isn’t he dead?”
“He is, but I believe he must have left behind some clues. We might be able to use those to find a way out,” Jiang Cheng confirmed.
“He is right.” Kui Yi addressed everyone, “Based on investigations, Yi Zhenliang was very close to Zhang Zhaowei before Xiang Nan was transferred here.” Kui Yi added in confusion, “However, when Miss Lin and I visited Zhang Zhaowei’s office, we didn’t find anything.”
“The clues won’t be at his office,” Jiang Cheng shook his head. “It’s his home.”
Kui Yi’s eyes lit up. “How did you know?”
“Zhang Zhaowei told me that himself,” Jiang Cheng hinted, “He told me a story about himself. After he died, he walked out of the morgue. He went home and knelt beside the bed until his neighbour found him.
“The clues should be hidden around the bed. Why else would he be kneeling around it?”
“He is a ghost.” Wang Changguo was suspicious. “Why would you believe him? Plus, if he really wanted to help us, why didn’t he tell us directly? Why take such a huge detour?” Wang Changguo made sense with his questions.
Kui Yi scratched his chin. With his understanding of the nightmare, he could accept Jiang Cheng’s explanation more easily. “It’s his obsession,” Kui Yi said confidently, “Even though Zhang Zhaowei is dead, something kept his soul in this place. Death turned his memory blurry. He couldn’t even tell who he was. However, he remembered this thing because it was very important to him.” Kui Yi concluded, “I agree with Brother Jiang. The clue is hidden at Zhang Zhaowei’s home.”
However, the travellers soon became demotivated because no one knew where Zhang Zhaowei lived. Kui Yi did a lot of research, but he didn’t pay attention to this. If this had happened yesterday, he could have found out more, but time was running out.
While the air stilled, Yu Yu raised her hand weakly, “I… I think I know.” freewebnσvel.cѳm
“Speak!” The group responded in unison.
“I… Don’t know it off the top of my head, but I know where we can find the address,” Yu Yu added quickly, “Do you remember the corpse we saw at the morgue?”
Cao Yang’s eyes brightened. “Do you mean the corpse carries the information?”
“I know it does!” Yu Yu confirmed, “It was a white card that was tied to the body’s feet. I remember it contains the address. City south…”
“City south what?” Kui Yi urged, “Be more specific!”
“I can’t remember.”
