Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Supernatural Events
"Twisted like a pretzel? What do you mean?" Yang Xiao was shocked.
Nalan Shuo sighed, "Literally, his entire body was twisted at death, his organs were squeezed out, intestines spilled all over the place, the scene was very bloody, believe me, you can’t possibly imagine."
Yang Xiao felt a shiver run through him just picturing that scene in his mind, "Who did it? No, what... what kind of thing did it?"
Nalan Shuo’s complexion turned ugly, "We don’t know, the scene at the time was very strange. It’s as if the Angel Envoy suddenly saw something, started going insane, yelling and screaming in the specially made room. But the room was soundproofed so well, we couldn’t hear what he was actually yelling about. In order to completely block out all external interference, we didn’t set up any microphones or cameras inside the room, only a special transparent window smaller than an A4 paper, through which we could see the situation inside."
"Shortly after he went mad, something abnormal started occurring in that special room. A strange grey mist appeared out of nowhere, and then the man was attacked. It all happened so quickly, we had no chance to react."
"Finally, his corpse was enveloped by the mist, and by the time we opened the room’s door, his body had already disappeared, and the mist had vanished as well." frёeωebɳovel.com
"What’s more terrifying is that the man completely disappeared. Not just the corpse, but the organs that had been squeezed out, his intestines, shattered bones, and even the blood that had flowed out were all gone without a trace, leaving the floor clean, as if he had never been there."
"Afterwards, did you look for this person?" Yang Xiao urgently wanted to know the outcome.
"We searched, but couldn’t find him. He vanished as if he had evaporated from the world, just like those who died in the Nightmare World."
Nalan Shuo’s words brought new information to Yang Xiao, "Are you saying everyone who dies in the Nightmare World disappears from reality?"
"Exactly," Nalan Shuo regarded Yang Xiao with some surprise, "Why, hasn’t Zhao Yuanpei told you about these things?"
Yang Xiao shook his head, "No, probably didn’t have the chance. We met very briefly." He figured that Zhao Yuanpei must be Kuang Hongyi’s real name.
"Those who die in the Nightmare World will disappear in the real world, which some people prefer to call erasure. It all means the same thing. Furthermore, as long as you can make it out alive, even if you’re hanging by a thread, you can recover afterwards," Nalan Shuo explained.
Yang Xiao knew about physical recovery; Kuang Hongyi had shown him a photo of Su Tingting. In the Nightmare World, a Ghost had dragged away half of her leg, but somehow, it was returned to her once she got out.
After some thought, Yang Xiao shared his own understanding, "Can I interpret it this way, that as long as someone survives the outing, besides additional memories of that time in the Nightmare World, everything else remains as usual?"
"That’s one way to see it, but not quite accurate. If you perform exceptionally during the mission, there’s also a chance to obtain the Resentful Eye, which is really something valuable."
Nalan Shuo stopped in his tracks; they had already walked into the police station, all the way to the back, where a four-story building stood alone.
"Alright, we’re here. I’m going to take you for a physical examination first."
There were people on guard duty outside the door, and as Yang Xiao approached the building, he saw a sign hanging on the right side of the entrance with the words Patrol Defense Bureau written in black on a white background, emanating a sense of authority.
Thinking that he was about to partake in the imperial grain...no, about to give back to society and ensure local safety, Yang Xiao felt a warm feeling inside and hurried to keep up with Director Nalan, "Director, are we signing a contract for this job?"
"Of course. Everything has to go through the proper procedure. That’s the rule."
Stepping into the first-floor lobby, the reception desk is located right ahead, where two young girls in uniform were seated, already putting their smartphones away as they spotted Nalan Shuo approaching from a distance, putting on a professional yet cold demeanor.
"Phew—" Yang Xiao let out a big sigh of relief; he liked this relaxed work atmosphere, conducive to slacking off.
To the left of the first floor was the public office area, with around twenty people, both male and female, none particularly old. At the moment, everyone was busy at their respective workstations, some on the phone, some bending over writing, and others typing away at computers.
"These are the ordinary staff; they don’t deal with our core operations, primarily handling various sudden day-to-day incidents, conducting preliminary rough screening and verification."
"You should know, oddities, accidents, and all sorts of things happen every day, but only a tiny portion of them actually involve supernatural events. They help us reduce a lot of unnecessary workload."
Nalan Shuo turned around and headed towards a door on the right side of the first floor, marked with the words "Medical Department."
Upon pushing the door open, the scene inside immediately changed; it was set up like a hospital, with a large transparent glass inquiry desk right behind the door. A middle-aged female doctor in a white coat hurried over, clutching a few sheets of paper, obviously having waited for a while.
"Director," the female doctor addressed Yang Xiao, "is this him?"
Over the next period of time, Yang Xiao underwent many physical examinations, including some very strange tests, such as being strapped to a rotatable iron frame, which then started spinning—to test his ability to withstand dizziness, according to the doctor. He was also asked to wear a curious small device, not allowed to take it off, constantly hearing a ticking sound and occasionally getting a small electric shock.
The most terrifying test was the last one, wherein an elderly woman who appeared old enough to be Yang Xiao’s great-grandmother held a notebook and, in all seriousness, kept asking Yang Xiao a series of embarrassing questions, digging deep for details. Seeing Yang Xiao uncooperative, she even pressed if he had any hidden health issues, whether psychological, physical, or perhaps technical.
After all that, Yang Xiao came out exhausted, both mentally and physically. When he emerged, someone took him to the third floor by elevator where Nalan Shuo was already waiting for him in his office.
Upon seeing Nalan Shuo, just as Yang Xiao was about to complain, he spotted Nalan Shuo placing a contract on the desk, followed by two stacks of cash beside it.
Seeing Yang Xiao gaping and silent, Nalan Shuo frowned, "Is there a problem?"
Sitting promptly before Nalan Shuo’s desk, still wearing the strange device, Yang Xiao’s eyes were fixed on the two stacks of cash, "No, I’m just eager to serve the organization, too eager!"
"I know you’re eager, but don’t rush. Look over the contract, and if it’s all good, sign it," said Nalan Shuo as he handed over a pen, adding, "You’re just beginning, so the salary is temporarily set at 23,000 per month, which will increase later on. There’s extra allowance for going out on missions, and bonuses for successful handling of supernatural events. Are you satisfied with these terms?"
"I could do this till I die!" Yang Xiao declared, signing his name on the designated line with flair.
Before he even reached for the money, the office door was knocked loudly in urgency. As the door opened, a man hurried in, pausing for a moment upon seeing Yang Xiao.
"What’s the matter, speak up," Nalan Shuo frowned slightly.
"Report, Director, we’ve received reliable information. Last night in a budget hotel on Huimin Street, something strange occurred. All the guests staying on the fourth floor had a bizarre dream where they were shrouded in fog, and the mist seemed to reveal a funeral procession passing through," the man spoke.
Yang Xiao: "??!"
