Chapter 1481: Chapter 904: Three

Then the three sat together and recounted their experiences one by one. Although they hadn’t found the film titled "Yinren," they didn’t come away empty-handed.

They confirmed the presence of two strange Chang Ghosts. One is the Headless Ghost that appears in the 17th-floor office, and the other is the Door-knocking Ghost in the 18th-floor Chen Film Industry office area. They roughly figured out the killing methods of both ghosts.

Just as Munan had suspected, the coat on the Waist-breaking Ghost was indeed tied by Chen Nang, but something unexpected happened along the way, and Chen Nang fled, never rejoining Munan.

"What happened?" Munan pressed.

Chen Nang pulled a crumpled piece of paper from his chest, "I got something from the female ghost’s pocket. This is a promise letter, but unfortunately, many of the words on the paper have been blurred by water and are utterly unrecognizable."

"I suspect this thing isn’t unique; other ghosts might have them too. So I ambushed the Waist-breaking Ghost, hid along its path, and wrapped its head with a coat. Sure enough, I found another letter in this guy’s pants pocket."

"The content of this letter is much clearer." Chen Nang smiled as he took out a second letter, soaked in blood, from his pocket.

Although Chen Nang spoke lightly of it, Munan and Zhang Jianjun, listening, could not hide their reactions. This guy dared to ambush a ghost and even rob it by covering its head with a coat. It was the first time they’d heard of such a thing.

Most crucially, Chen Nang got away. The phrase ’skill over fear’ manifested itself at this moment.

"Impressive," Munan couldn’t help but praise.

Chen Nang smiled but said nothing, only unfolding the much clearer promise letter and handing it to Munan.

Zhang Jianjun also leaned in, and the two read it together.

The promise letter was brief and vague, only promising not to divulge the company’s filming secrets and to keep something secret, but it never mentioned what that something was.

This affirmed that something had indeed happened during the filming of a certain film by Chen’s Strange Film Company, and this matter must absolutely not be leaked.

In Munan’s eyes and those of the other two, the greatest function of the promise letter wasn’t its promise but a form of threat. After all, writing this promise letter meant that the person was in the know, and if blame was traced later, no one would escape. This was a tactic by the company’s higher-ups.

And seeing the promise letter on several ghosts suggested that this secret matter had happened not long ago. It seemed that this matter was what caused their deaths.

Now it was confirmed that this ghost incident was related to the East Mountain Machinery Factory tragedy. Additionally, this film was exported to Japan under the Japanese title "Yinren," matching the Ghost Script’s name.

Their investigation would now focus on the East Mountain Machinery Factory. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

"Hope...everything goes smoothly," Munan said softly, holding the promise letter.

Chen Nang didn’t react much, but Zhang Jianjun sighed and turned back, looking dejected. After all, they had only temporarily escaped this night, but come daylight, one among them would still encounter a ghost. Would it be him? He didn’t know.

...

At daylight, Yang Xiao and Jiang Qingluan rushed over, buying three baskets of buns for the night watch crew along the way.

There were four on watch, one died, and three were left, each with a basket.

Returning to the office by stairs, they found indeed three were left; Yang Yan was dead. She was slightly better than a newbie, and her death was in everyone’s interest except her own.

It was clear that everyone was relatively satisfied with this outcome, but since they were teammates, it wouldn’t be polite to appear too cold-hearted by laughing out loud.

By now, the mission had reached a critical point of life and death. Without much waste of words, everyone quickly exchanged information.

Soon, the information about the Headless Ghost and the Door-knocking Ghost was imprinted in Yang Xiao’s team’s minds, along with that promise letter.

After learning that Chen Nang obtained it by robbing the Waist-breaking Ghost, the group showed varied expressions. Yang Xiao found this guy rather intriguing, and even Shu Shuang and newcomers like Zhou Hai looked at Chen Nang with a hint of fear.

Without Yang Xiao prompting, Chen Nang voluntarily disclosed the clues he’d obtained from Xu Yan, confirming the paranormal incident’s origin as East Mountain Machinery Factory.

"East Mountain Machinery Factory is right in this city, an old factory, long abandoned now; there may have been a fire there once," Yang Xiao recounted his conversation with Xu Yan the previous night.

After breakfast, they decided to split into two groups: one to stay at the company to handle affairs, and the other to head to the East Mountain Machinery Factory site to seek clues.

"Chu Xi, can we talk privately?" Chen Nang suddenly asked.

"Sure," Yang Xiao nodded.

Chen Nang and Yang Xiao stepped out of the office, and Munan, sensing something, followed.

The three moved to a secluded corridor outside. Chen Nang spoke first, but not to Yang Xiao; instead, he addressed Munan, "Let’s not drag Zhang Jianjun into today’s matter; he’s not like you and me."

"I know. Today, the DV machine should go to either you or me. Though it might lead to death, we can’t waste this opportunity," Munan said straightforwardly.

"How about...drawing lots?" Chen Nang proposed.

"Okay, draw lots," Munan nodded.

Chen Nang looked at Yang Xiao, "Chu Xi, can you be our witness? Please prepare for us."

"Is this why you called me out here, for this?" Yang Xiao frowned slightly. He had thought it was something incredibly significant.

"Just helping us out; whether it’s Munan or me chosen today, the chance of surviving is slim," Chen Nang smiled bitterly.

This was true, and neither was willing to pass the potential deadly opportunity to Zhang Jianjun, showing responsibility to the whole team.

They still held a glimmer of hope to evade their pursuer and complete their mission, a quality Zhang Jianjun lacked, as Chen Nang clearly understood.

Last night’s "interrogation" was a test for Munan and Zhang Jianjun; before Munan returned, he had also "interrogated" Zhang Jianjun, finding the latter’s reflexes and crisis management somewhat inadequate.

Yang Xiao tore a piece of paper, rolled two small paper slips, one long, one short, held one in each hand, and presented his fists before them for them to choose, demonstrating the simplest method’s effectiveness.

"Any wishes?" Yang Xiao suddenly interjected, "I heard making a wish brings good luck; movies always portray this."

"I wish to survive and leave," Munan intertwined his hands over his heart, closing his eyes to make the most pragmatic wish.

"How about you?" Yang Xiao looked at Chen Nang, curious about him.

Unexpectedly, Chen Nang shook his head with a self-mocking laugh, "My wish is pointless, unattainable even if made."

"What if? People must hope, never give up," Yang Xiao encouraged.

"I wish for freedom; if not, let me...die here," Chen Nang paused and sighed.

"Who chooses first?" Yang Xiao extended his fists toward them.

"Ladies first," Chen Nang displayed gentlemanly manners.

"Then...left," Munan decided.

"Are you sure?"

"I’m sure!" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

As the fist opened, Munan managed a wry smile, reaching for the paper slip in her hand, turning to leave. "Seems it’s me. You should also get prepared."

"But the other hand isn’t opened yet, Miss Munan," Chen Nang remarked at Munan’s back, surprised one paper slip alone couldn’t determine victory.

"No need; it’s decided. I’ll go and survive, and you will too!" Munan proclaimed dramatically, holding her fist wrapped around the slip.
