Chapter 376 (2): One Should Face Every Challenge Bravely
Nilsson didn’t know what had happened to Regina. Regina never told her about her tragic death. Because one sister wanted to become Wayne’s secretary, while the other sister was vehemently against it, their relationship worsened.
Regina would love to help her older sister, but there was no way to make Nilsson a vengeful spirit. What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly torture her sister and kill her so that she would die with grievances.
If Nilsson didn’t become a vengeful spirit, she only had two ways to grow her power rapidly: follow Senna’s example, or become Wayne’s lover.
Both would end with her joining Wayne’s harem as a sex-payer. Regina could not in good conscience allow that to happen. While her boss was a good man, his private life was too messy. His heart was divided into... into... how many parts again?
Regina counted on her two hands and gave up halfway. Who knew how many parts Wayne had divided his overly active compassion? She had lost count. If she recruited her sister even knowing all that, wouldn’t she be pushing her sister into a burning pit?
Impossible. She refused to do it.
As they said, pasture was always greener on the other side. That described the sisters’ situation. Nilsson wanted to grow stronger, and she was eager to move to the greener pasture, while Regina had become stronger and had been keeping her sister on the other side of the fence for her sake.
If they weren’t sisters, Regina’s stubborn refusal without a proper explanation would’ve led Nilsson to believe that she was trying to hoard the resources for herself. Of course, the situation wasn’t much better now. The sisters were in a cold war. Ottilia seized the chance to become Nilsson’s new younger sister.
Her new younger sister had ulterior motives, but Nilsson didn’t know that. She only knew that Ottilia was a good sister who was always considerate to her.
Wayne almost died laughing while he watched the three of them exchange sarcastic barbs.
But you should stop already. I’ve decided that Nilsson will become the new Pope’s assistant secretary.
Speaking of Senna, Senna came. Her Holiness the Pope wore a long white robe made of an airy fabric, with a simple, elegant cut. It hugged her curves gently to accentuate her dignity while creating an otherworldly aloofness. The collars and sleeves were sewn with elegant golden patterns, and a simple symbol of the Church of Nature adorned the hem of the long robe, representing nature’s cycle and life’s eternity.
Clothes maketh the woman. Senna’s appearance and temperament had always been top-tier. The enhancement of the Pope’s robe gave her appeal an epic buff, adding a hint of dignity and holiness. If Veronica were here, she would’ve gulped.
Gulp! x4
Wayne swallowed and realized that there were three other tracks. He turned to his three secretaries derisively. Why are you three salivating over her? Do you have a motive? Do you have the instrument to commit the crime?
The three women ducked their heads in mortification, their faces flushed. They could see their feet just fine since their busts were only medium-sized.
Unfazed, Senna strode past the three women. Her assertive, perfect gait made Ottilia’s mouth slack. If she, a woman, reacted like this, wouldn’t Wayne be drooling after her? The opponent was too powerful. She needed help. One wouldn’t be enough, so she needed two.
Ottilia looked at Regina and Nilsson. They shared the same figures and faces, only lacking in brains. With the twins by her side, there was nothing she couldn’t achieve.
“Your Holiness, what’s the purpose of this visit?” Wayne bowed. “Apologies for the insufficient greeting. I hope you don’t take offence.”
Senna narrowed her eyes, creating a throne with her thoughts before taking a seat. She patted her thigh and said, “You’re an archdeacon, aren’t you?”
“First-level archdeacon, to be precise.”
“Little Archdeacon, do you know what happens to those who offend the Pope?” Senna patted her long legs again with a suggestive smile.
The two flirted aggressively, making the three secretaries supporting characters in their roleplay. Two minutes later, Wayne raised a hand to stop the impromptu act.
At the end of the day, Ottilia was his official girlfriend, and a boyfriend had to be a real scumbag to flirt with his lover right in front of his girlfriend.
“Pope Senna, are you done with your work?”
“No, I’ll be quite busy for the foreseeable future.”
Senna shook her head, giving Wayne a dissatisfied look. She had been working hard for him, but after working overtime for two nights straight, he hadn’t even asked after her once. She wanted to talk business with him this time!
Wayne could read her thoughts. He said apologetically, “I’m the knight’s successor at the end of the day and shouldn’t get involved in the church’s matters. Otherwise, people will talk, which will undermine your work.”
As he spoke, though, the throne was already under Wayne’s bottom.
Senna wasn’t going to suppress her desires now that she was the Pope. She sat in his lap and put her arms around his neck, her beautiful eyes turning hazy. Ignoring the three secretaries, she started feeling him up.
“Let’s talk business first.” Wayne caught her hands and took a breath. “How’s the church doing? Any dissenters?”
“Weaving, Baker, and McCarey are dealing with the difficult ones. They know what to do with Ludwig’s old subordinates. The resentment bred would be targeted at them.”
The internal affairs of the church were the Pope’s concerns. Wayne had stayed out of it, allowing Senna to make all the decisions. He was only interested in the warehouses—not just Ludwig’s, but also Weaving’s, Baker’s, and McCarey’s.
“Those three have their own spotty track records,” Wayne said, trying to influence Senna with pillow talk. “The only thing that sets them apart from Ludwig was their cowardice, which stopped them from working with the demons.”
Senna smiled. “They are still useful now. Once the situation settles down, I’ll take care of them.”
She knew the three Oracle High Reverends’ true nature. Weasels didn’t even begin to describe them. Moreover, if the role of High Prophet weren’t so unique that no one could replace Tubert, she would’ve wanted to deal with him, too.
That would come later, of course. The three Oracle High Reverends were devoted to her and would do all the dirty work without complaints. Senna needed them to be the bad guys. Once resentment accumulated and reached a breaking point, it would be the best time to deal with said bad guys.
Wayne nodded. Senna didn’t need his reminders with all her intelligence and shrewdness. If he said too much, it would only make it seem like the Pope was persecuting her loyal subordinates because of her blind trust in her boy toy.
Senna explained her arrangements concisely before reaching Wayne with her thoughts, “Ludwig’s betrayal has to be treated with care. No one would dare to downplay it. The Holy Maiden has reported it to the goddess. Then...”
“The goddess doesn’t care, does She?”
“And you knew that already?”
“Of course. I’ve taken that into consideration before handing you the Elemental Mantra.”
Wayne stroked his chin. In the Goddess of Nature’s eyes, he was three chosen knights in one. It was too suspicious for an unapproved stranger to pick up three divine artifacts at once. In addition to the Goddess of Nature, the Goddess of Sun and the Goddess of Moonlight were paying attention to him as well.
Darienne had said that the Goddess of Moonlight approved of Wayne becoming the chosen knight, that he would be her successor, so Darienne should take good care of him. The same thing had probably happened with Nature and Sun.
The Goddess of Darkness, on the other hand, held more information and coveted the body of the five chosen knights in one, so much so that She took matters into Her own hands.
It was later revealed that the Goddess of Darkness hadn’t given Herself away for free. Although Ines looked like Wayne’s inside and outside, she still retained her autonomy and alternated between being his vassal and being the Goddess of Darkness.
The goddess had gotten what She wanted. The one who had fallen into a trap was Wayne.
The old hags had been around for too long, and there was nothing he could do about them. He stopped naively believing himself capable of corrupting any of them. Instead, he aimed to bargain for more benefits by leveraging his rarity.
“According to the oracle that Desiree passed along, the goddess approved of the regime change. I will be the rightful Pope.” Senna frowned. “I’m not sure if the goddess has seen through my existence. Will this trouble you in the future?”
Wayne shrugged. “If the goddess had sent the Holy Maiden to me, it would mean She had seen through you. But clearly, Desiree hasn’t knocked on my door at night.”
“That’s because you’ve been staying at the Pope’s basilica, so Desiree can’t find you,” Senna said with an eyeroll.
Wayne nodded. “That is a possibility. I’ll go on a stroll tonight. Maybe I’ll run into her...”
“Really?”
“Yes, I need to test her just in case.”
“What if she wants it?”
“Then I give it to her. Out with the old, and in with the new. I have hundreds of millions more to offer.”
“...”
Senna rolled her eyes. She couldn’t tell if Wayne was being serious or riling her up purposefully. She talked about the Church of Heavenly Father’s response instead. “The Church of Heavenly Father contacted me. I used your name, so they do take the matter very seriously and are willing to work with the Church of Nature.”
“As they should.”
Wayne nodded. There were too many places that the Gate of Hell could be opened in. With the manpower shortage, the Papal State wasn’t going to try to do everything on its own. They had to start working with the Church of Nature as soon as possible.
When Senna still seemed unconvinced, Wayne said, “I’m close to the Papal State, but not that close. Compared to Your Stunning Holiness, His Horniness is nothing but an old crook. I have been and will always be on your side.”
Senna nodded. Then she could use the Papal State without worry. She glanced at Wayne with crinkling eyes. “I’ve become the Pope, leaving one of the four spots of Oracle High Reverends empty. I’d like to promote one of my people. What do you think about my student, Silvia?”
I think not. The Darkness Knight will come knocking.
Wayne shook his head. “The headquarters of the church is a terrible environment, and you’re a bad woman with a fierce personality. I’m worried that you’ll be a bad influence on Master. Choose someone else.”
“She’s too much of an idiot to learn from us.”
“...”
Watch your words. She’s going to be your mother-in-law. Are you looking for a beating?
Wayne raised an eyebrow. When Senna refused to label Silvia as anything other than an idiot, he realized that he had almost fallen for Senna’s trick. She was looking for a beating.
He rolled his eyes, pointing at Nilsson. “The girl’s a good choice...”
“For Oracle High Reverend?!” Senna asked in surprise. The girl was too green for the job.
Huh? Me, an Oracle High Reverend?
Nilsson jumped. The mantle was too heavy for her.
“What? Of course not. I’m talking about the job post I promised her. She’s one of ours, so train her well.”
Oh, I can do it!
Nilsson grimaced. Although the responsibility was great, and she wasn’t capable enough yet, one should face every challenge in life bravely. She wanted to find out her limit.
Sir Knight, Big Sister, give me a chance!
“I understand. I’ll treat her well...”
Looking at the face that was identical to Regina’s, Senna silently murmured, “Interesting.”
Then she asked bluntly, “Is she one of yours, or someone who could be one of yours?”
“You’re imagining things,” Wayne interrupted her train of thought. His reputation had worsened to this state because those around him kept misunderstanding him.
“Silvia won’t work, and this girl isn’t the right choice. How about...” Senna batted her eyes at him. “You? Would you like to become an Oracle High Reverend?”
