Chapter 30: Ch 30: First Day [3]
Enzo struggled as he rolled on the ground, sand intruding his eyes and ears.
"Point!"
"Point!"
Two consecutive kicks landed on him as he tried getting up. It seemed that Ariel wanted to flatten him to the ground but nevertheless, Enzo got up.
He retreated back as he maintained a distance from Ariel. Then clearing away the sand particles that were irritating his eyes and ears, he slipped back into a proper posture.
This was the best he could do and he wasn’t going to abandon that just because he had been beaten down once.
Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward as he met Ariel’s sword strike with his own counter strike.
He couldn’t afford to let him hit his shield anytime he liked. It was already dented at several places and the pain he felt because of those dents was quite a lot. But still if he wanted to defend from any accidental strike aimed at his head, he needed the metallic shield.
Ariel vanished again. Before Enzo could make a guess, he was kicked from yet another direction as Ariel appeared back.
"Point!"
The next second, he went invisible again and landed another kick on Enzo.
A flurry of kicks and sword slashes followed as Ariel continued the same combo.
Vanish. Strike. Appear. Repeat.
Enzo’s flimsy armour was of no use against the sharp blade of Ariel’s premium sword that cut deep into his skin and drew flesh and blood.
Begrudgingly, Enzo had to admit Ariel was far better than his current form.
"Point! Point! Point!..."
He didn’t even know how many points he was trailing by in this match.
At the same time, the invigilator paused and then shouted, "Sixty seconds left."
Enzo activated his Mana Vision.
He wasn’t really willing to use this skill since it requires a lot of mana. And he really needed that mana for his temporary body enhancement.
The world lost all it’s colours as Enzo saw a huge number of red coloured figures. His gaze involuntarily shifted towards the large pavilion. A few of the nobles had mana so dense that their mana colour looked the same as impure blood.
’As expected...they are no whimps that need their own soldiers to fight. They are powrhouses by their own accord.’
But then...
His eyes shifted towards a group of individuals. He couldn’t see where they were sitting but from the distance, he guessed they were at the furthest corner of the pavilion.
Their mana flow was quite strange...
’No, not really strange. It’s more like it’s calmer than the mana flow of any other people. Even the powerful few nobles didn’t even this calmness in their mana.’
He knew who they were: the group of Bewitchers.
And from their mana density, he figured the Bewitchers sitting here weren’t too powerful either. At best, their leader was at C-rank.
’Since they are from the Citadel, they are probably just students.’
He was about to turn his eyes back towards Ariel who was in his invisibility state when something caught his eye.
He turned to the Bewitchers with a frown as he saw thin golden veins like capillaries passing through their body, entangled with their mana veins.
As if sensing his gaze, the golden veins glowed brighter.
All of a sudden, Enzo felt his vision twirl as the world changed around him.
He snapped open his eyes, steadying his blurry vision.
He looked around him and was instantly alarmed as he found himself surrounded by thick fog descending everywhere his eyes could follow.
He looked down at himself and his eyes almost popped out.
His body was painted golden, with billions of particles flowing inside him. It made his golden body appear like a transparent shell.
But what surprised him was the amount of mana in the atmosphere. He wasn’t even using his skills here and yet, just by breathing, he could tell the mana was truly abundant here. And quite dense as well.
He really wondered where he was.
Suddenly, his ears picked up a growl from somewhere far away. The sound however...made him shiver as a sense of danger passed through him.
Another growl. From another direction.
But this one was closer than the first.
Enzo’s dread increased as he clasped his hand around the sword....
"H-huh?!" He gasped in horror as he realised he wasn’t carrying the rusty sword with him any longer.
At that moment, he realised he was neither wearing the armour nor carrying the shield on his left arm.
But he didn’t feel like he was naked either. It was as if an artist had drawn the common anatomy of a human without differentiating the sex and passed it to him.
The number of growls increased. They came from right, left, behind...from every direction. Someone...or rather something had even screeched in a high pitch voice as it flew up in the sky with a terrifying speed.
Right at that moment, a bolt of lightning fell down from the skies as it penetrated the fogs and illuminated the space temporarily.
Enzo found himself looking in that direction. And immediately wished he hadn’t.
For hiding in these fogs were monsters. Hundreds of them. All crawling towards his direction.
Enzo vividly remembered the creatures - not a single speck of skin on them, their flesh writhing like it had a sentience of it’s own. They moved on four limbs, some on three as their mouths remained agape, their teeth razor sharp as lopped tongues drooled with saliva. Their forehead were extremely large with no eyes on them.
Nor did Enzo see any ears or noses.
And then the landscape... frёewebnoѵēl.com
Enzo really felt like vomiting then and there itself had a bigger crisis not been waiting for him.
When compared to the monsters coming at him, the lands were worse. Bloor red skies, thunderbolts crackling as they reached the "lands", which was more like a desolate area filled with flesh and mangled organs.
They covered as far as he could peer into the horizon. Blood flowed in here like rivers, or maybe it was truly the river in this hellish world.
The monsters were now closer, their growls more desperate as if expressing their rising hunger.
Enzo felt his chest constrict with...fear. An extreme level of fear.
He had never felt anything as potent as this.
At that moment, he felt the world calling to him. Right then, an idea naturally seeped into his mind.
"The mana....I feel it. This body i-is a shell to be filled with the raw mana."
He felt the promise of strength call to him. He could almost imagine how strong he would be when he could taste the mana and blow every single monster charging at him.
And so, he closed his eyes attempting to let the mana fill inside him.
But just as he was able to do that, a voice called out.
"WAIT!"
The urgency in the voice snapped his eyes open as he was startled to see a thick shadowy figure standing beside him.
"Don’t even think about using that mana. Not now, not ever!"
A feminine voice growled from under the shadows.
Enzo looked at the shadow with caution as he inquired, "What type of creature are you??"
A momentary pause. Then the composed voice broke as the figure under the shadowy cloak shouted with indignation.
"H-how dare you call me that?! I am a Bewitcher, you idiot!"
