Chapter 23: Ch 23: Escape

Princess Valerie.

An anomaly. Neither suitable for either camps of protagonists or the antagonists.

However, despite all her flaws, she had the latent potential of a great leader. Or atleast that was the impression she had left on Enzo.

Though she was just that - only a latent potential. In reality, the people of Windsor leaned towards their handsome princes. Not just because the two princes were males but they also were men who sold dreams of glory and valor to their citizens while scheming behind the titanic walls of their palace.

Valerie on the other hand, looked more like a hollow shell. Her eyes wherever they looked, could revoke a creepy sense of uneasiness and even fear. They were just that empty.

Moreover in a society where female rulers were as rare as finding a gold coin in a trash can, majority of the citizens didn’t ever count her in the equation of hierarchy for their next ruler.

And this was exactly the reason why Enzo had decided to provoke Valerie - a crimson butterfly who lacked in actions.

The empire could encourage slavery as much as they want. That however, didn’t mean that was Valerie’s ideology. Rather she had always frowned her brows at the very concept of selling and buying humans.

’Or atleast had once frowned when she still carried her emotions.’

A bittersweet smile crept up Enzo’s lips. He peeked through the broken side of the caravan where two additional men, their faces covered, had suddenly happened.

They took out a golden key and unlocked the metallic cuffs from the five prisoners. Immediately, the air around them changed as their mana flared back into life.

’Wait a minute, these cuffs are cutting off our mana?!’

Enzo asked himself, surprised. He hadn’t even bothered using his mana since the moment he had woken up. Afterall why would he do that and waste his precious mana when he knew it couldn’t help him escape?

A flaming strike appeared at the corner of his eyes. He watched it as in no time, the crescent flame swept towards Zen, who rolled backwards to dodge it.

Behind him, a small explosion rocked the ground as the fire spread backwards.

Enzo shifted his eyes from where the attack had appeared. There, he saw a few soldiers - all of them the grey armoured Sihapis, rushing towards the fleeing prisoners.

"Tsk, they are really abandoning the caravans and coming here huh?" One of the two men - the ones who had shot the caravan and had their faces covered, said in a disappointed tone.

"They aren’t many. We can kill them."

Zen said as he took a tentative step forward as if getting ready to fight them. His eyes however darted behind, looking for permission.

John, standing at the back of the group, stroked his beard with a calculative gaze.

"No, we don’t take a fight here. Too many...variables. Retreat! We get back to safety...for now."

To Enzo’s surprise, Zen actually listened to the old man as they checked their postions before running backwards. They climbed the short slope and disappeared in the covers of the small forest.

Sighing, Enzo prayed.

’I hope Valerie takes advantage of this opportunity I gave her.’

He was betting on the fact that she might recruit the five and their small organisation. Afterall, it’s always for the best to have a group of rebels behind you rather than against you. Additionally, it would strengthen Valerie’s faction.

’She has practically no ambitions. My best chance to escape my slavery would be if she were to be the next ruler. And for that, it’s highly important a man like John is in her faction.’

He peeked outside again and saw the group of Sihapis that had been at a distance away, had now changed their route and were giving them chase into the forest.

"T-they are going in that direction. What are you all waiting for, duffers? This is our chance, so run while we still can."

A man with panicked eyes, stuttered out inside the caravan. He too had seen the soldiers running in the opposite direction of their caravan.

And given the sounds of clanking metals and screams, it seemed that the fight which had distracted the soldiers originally and had given the prisoners the time to escape, was still going on.

Surely in such a scenario, they should be able to escape right?

"Yes, you are right. I wasn’t moving since neither of you were moving either. But it seems we were all thinking the same." A girl chuckled nervously as she showed her support to the man’s proposal.

"So let’s run away before the other soldiers recover. And we are all named members of our clan. We shall rip away these mere awakened soldiers."

’Mere awakened?’ Enzo really wanted to laugh out at their stupidity.

So while he watched them all hurrying and pushing against each other to quickly move out, he himself sat on his seat comfortably.

The girl sitting on his right, rose up from her seat. Her legs however hesitated as her gaze moved between her clan members trying to escape and the black haired boy, who was still sitting at his seat with his eyes closed. Showing no signs of moving anytime soon.

Reluctantly, she tapped him on his shoulders.

"Brother, not go out?" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Enzo opened one of his eyes as he stared at her. Then after a brief pause, he shook his head. Before closing his eyes once more, he gave her an advice.

"Unless you can somehow cut off these handcuffs, you shall just be a target practice for the Windsor men. I bet they shall all be captured again in an hour."

Saying that, he slipped slightly on his seat and closed his eyes. This time, with the full intention of going to sleep.

The girl looked at him, her mind trying to make a decision. She clutched her forehead as an annoyed expression covered her face. It seemed like even making a decision for herself was a major task.

With one last look at Enzo, she sighed and sat back on her seat. Her ears however, were strained as she tried to catch every noise outside the caravan.
