Chapter 9: Eyeball Breakfast
"You are a star, thank you."
Those words made Charles more proud than he would like to admit. However, he couldn’t help but feel it wasn’t fully deserved.
After all, wasn’t she the one that damaged the dragon first?
"It’s nothing, don’t worry," he said.
Then, he withdrew the Red Dragon’s Eye from his body.
The slimy, slippery object landed in his hands. It was mostly grey, with a red iris in the shape of a diamond.
The magical item was not only the size of a human head, but it also carried a strange presence. freēwēbnovel.com
When Charlotte caught sight of the item, her eyes went wider. She was clearly feeling joy.
Meanwhile, Charles recoiled slightly.
"Um... How are you going to eat this?"
Not only did the eye look disgusting, but it also had an unpleasant smell. He couldn’t imagine having to eat it himself.
Charlotte outstretched her hands, reaching for the eyeball.
"I don’t need to eat the whole thing. Just a bite will be okay."
With the eyeball in her hand, Charles watched with a scrunched face as she brought it closer to her mouth.
She then opened her delicate lips and took a small bite out of the grey flesh.
Slime and blood covered her face, but she didn’t seem bothered. She simply chewed until she was able to swallow the contents.
As the magical item entered her stomach, changes immediately started to take place.
Her skin and hair glowed for a few seconds.
A faint aura left her body and spread around her surroundings.
Her eyes turned a darker silver.
Then afterwards, these things faded away, turning everything back to normal.
Charles looked at Charlotte, who held the giant eyeball in her hand. She still had blood around her mouth.
He waited a few seconds before speaking.
"How do you feel?"
"I feel... incredible," Charlotte responded joyfully.
Charles cheered inwardly.
It worked. Eating that disgusting eyeball actually helped her.
"I’m still far from my prime condition, but I feel so much better than before you came here. Thank you, Charles Abraham."
Suddenly, Charlotte outstretched her arms.
Charles blinked a few times, wondering what she was doing.
Is she trying to cast some sort of spell?
A few moments later, he wanted to slap himself in the face.
Am I an idiot? She wants a hug.
Charles leaned forwards and embraced Charlotte. It wasn’t a hug that carried romance with it, but it was a warm hug.
Her body still felt weak in his arms, and it only made him want to protect her more.
As he pulled away from the hug, he noticed that she was blushing. Wasn’t she the one who initiated the hug?
Charlotte cleared her throat before handing the eyeball back to Charles. He scowled at it before placing it back inside his body.
"So, I see that you have gotten stronger?" Charlotte pointed out.
It seemed that although nobody could view her system, she could still view theirs. Not to mention, as the author, she likely was able to view a more detailed version of the system than everybody else.
Charles nodded.
"Yeah, Algadon’s rewards were plenty. However, I can’t use them safely without the Dragon subclass."
Charlotte nodded.
"Is the Dragon subclass your goal?" she then asked.
The question made Charles think for a few moments.
As an avid reader of The Fourth Apocalypse, he knew of many subclasses and which were the most powerful.
However, those were only the subclasses he had been introduced to so far. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
It would be unwise to make a decision based on his own knowledge when he had the author right in front of him.
So he decided to ask, "Which subclass would you suggest?"
Charlotte changed her seating position then. She bent her legs and hugged her knees up to her chest.
"Well, as you know, all subclasses have their benefits. What’s more important is finding a subclass that can fill in the gaps that your main class doesn’t have."
"As an Editor, your abilities are mostly connected to rewriting laws and authority. This is one of the strongest, most versatile classes, as it will allow you to strengthen and heal yourself whilst also weakening and strengthening others. You will be able to cover most areas in battle."
Charles rubbed at his chin.
"So you are saying that I should get a subclass that has its benefits outside of battle."
Charlotte snapped her fingers.
"Exactly."
This train of thought made Charles change his ideas. He had previously planned on aiming for some sort of warrior subclass, but now it seemed that didn’t have many uses.
He contemplated going for some sort of class that would allow him to increase the amount of mana he possessed. That way, he could use his Editor skills more freely.
Still, finding a subclass was still a long way away for him. He decided to brush the thought away for now and focus on it later.
For now, he wanted to utilise the time that Charlotte was awake.
He looked back at the woman again. There was still blood around her mouth. Afterwards, he looked around the room.
"This room is very bare. You should consider filling it with some of the things needed in a house."
Charlotte tilted her head slightly, confused.
"Like what?"
Like what... What do you mean, "like what"? Haven’t you lived in a house before?
"Like furniture, cooking utensils, water supplies, a bathtub. You can’t rely on that notebook to do everything for you forever."
That same look of confusion remained on her face as she thought for a few moments.
"I guess... I never expected to stay here for long, so I didn’t bother. Now that I think about it, this is the best place for us to be right now."
Ignoring the fact that she said "us", Charles acknowledged her other words.
The rest of the world was certainly in a chaotic state, especially the Silverblessed Kingdom, which was currently at war, fighting against a coalition composed of three other kingdoms.
The only place they didn’t bother coming to was Elurion, the capital of the Silverblessed Kingdom, where they were currently located.
After all, it was believed that the land was cursed.
"Don’t push yourself, of course. Maybe just start with something that will get you out of bed and give you a reason to move around once you’ve recovered enough."
Charlotte considered the words for a few moments before making a resolute face and nodding.
"Okay!"
