Chapter 2: Dormant Abilities.
Damien exhaled lightly, his head still airy. After walking into the black nebulous gate that had hounded him for weeks, he had a strange dream. He even heard an insidious voice calling his name. It was odd; the last time he remembered dreaming was back at the orphanage.
Damien finally opened his bright blue eyes and froze in confusion. Staring back at him was an adorable girl with round almond eyes, long black hair, and a trace of baby fat still clinging to her cheeks. She couldn’t have been older than sixteen.
Damien stared blankly for a moment.
"Wait! A human".
He suddenly shot upright. Caught off guard, the girl failed to react in time, and their foreheads met with a muffled bang.
"Ouch".
She let out a small cry and jumped back, clutching her forehead as a tear welled at the corner of her eye.
"What’s wrong with you, I thought you were dead... Awww, I even felt your pulse. How are you alive again?".
Damien didn’t answer the girl, he raised both hands defensively and pushed his back against the wooden cage, his breath was uneven and his mind hazy.
Just a moment ago he was convinced he was the last human on earth, and now there’s suddenly another one, no wait. There were more.
Damien silently dropped both hands, there were three people staring blankly at him, they made it seem like he was the weird one, he didn’t like that.
"What are you all looking at?".
The guy amongst them glanced at the more mature woman in the group, but she looked away as though the situation had nothing to do with her. Left with no choice, he sighed and stepped forward.
"Hi friend, My name is Chad... I know you’re confused, and probably scared too, but I assure you, we are all on the same side here".
Chad gestured towards the sixteen year old girl and said coolly.
"This is Seris, she’s young. But easy to talk to, if you don’t feel comfortable talking to me, you can always go to her. She can show you the ropes, OK".
He moved his hand towards the other girl, she was about twenty one, the same age as Damien and Chad, so Damien took his time studying her. She was pale with short black hair that covered half her face, her physique was thin and clearly built for sport.
"This is Yuri".
Damien waited, but that was it. Chad didn’t say anymore, so he turned towards him and said with a dry voice.
"Hi Chad".
Chad smiled awkwardly. Damien was pale, not the usual pale, after all, most people in the tower are pale skinned due to the effects of their awakening, but his was different. It was like that of a corpse.
When the creature threw him into the cage, he was motionless and lifeless, Seris even checked him with her dormant ability, so they were sure he was dead, and yet. Here he was, talking to them like it was nothing.
Yuri was a lot more direct than Chad, without the courtesy of a smile, she said plainly.
"You just entered the tower?".
Damien turned to her.
"Yeah... a moment ago I was on a cliff in the ruins of New York, then I entered the gate, snow was the last thing I saw before I passed out".
"What about your dormant ability? If you have an attack based ability, we might be able to break out of this cage?".
She asked two consecutive questions, it wasn’t that she was rude, she just didn’t want to waste time on pointless speeches, they were caged and could probably die at any time, they didn’t have the luxury of an intro.
Damien froze.
"I don’t know what that is?".
Yuri wasn’t discouraged, oftentimes. People are too disoriented by the Emissary to pay attention to their awakening, she concluded that Damien was probably one of those.
"You can try saying status window since you don’t know how to use your will, the Emissary will show you your current ability".
She lifted her hand and made a slight motion with her finger tips.
"See, your dormant ability is the skill you gain when you enter the tower".
A tiny white bolt of lightning snapped out of her finger tips before immediately disappearing into open air.
"I can generate short bursts of electricity, I can use it to stun people and even move at incredible speeds... with a sword I can be deadly, but without it. I’m basically a fast living stun gun, My dormant ability is Impulse".
Seris rubbed her forehead one last time, before crawling back to the center of the cage, sitting cross-legged directly in front of Damien.
"My dormant ability is called Life thread". She announced proudly. "I can perceive and influence living anatomy... But it didn’t work on you though". Her enthusiasm vanished as quickly as it came.
Damien didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, what they were saying was pretty insane, but again. Humanity did end in a single day and earth has become the nest of unholy monstrosities, so what they were saying didn’t sound that insane.
He ambiguously turned to Chad, he was the only that remained silent in the group.
Noticing the gazes focused on him, Chad finally spoke up.
"My dormant ability is Veil, I can make objects or myself obscure and difficult to be perceived, but if you pay attention enough, it loses its effect... I can’t use it to do much really, and it’s almost useless in a fight".
Damien didn’t know what to say to that, the ability to make things obscure was pretty OP as far he was concerned, imagine making a bullet obscure, the enemy will never know what hit him, this guy is definitely a glorified assassin in the making.
Damien shook his head and turned away, his dormant ability? Now that his head got screwed back on by the insanity of these three, he could faintly remember a ghost-like voice speaking in his head, it was definitely the Emissary, the voice said so, what’s there to doubt.
"Status window". Damien said, intentionally changing his voice to sound cool.
