Chapter 19: Pushing Harder.
"There’s always a certain type of injustice that no one, no matter how religious, kind, gentle, or even insane, can truly bear. It’s when you are blamed and stigmatised for something you didn’t do, or perhaps hated by your whole class for reasons you don’t understand. Maybe the friend you truly care about suddenly turns against you in favour of someone else...
Humans, by the definite nature of our emotional state of being, tend to allow these kinds of injustices to hurt us. Even when we claim they don’t, they always do. We might hide it well, but we can’t simply turn it off.
Except humans are also adaptive creatures. When pushed to the edge, we tend to push back, and most times, we push harder...
I was hated from the moment I was born, dumped in a gutter like rotten yoghurt, then by the kids at the orphanage, and eventually by every co-worker I had the displeasure of working with. I have long adapted to the world and learned to accept the reality I was dealt with."
Whoosh.
Just as the volley of arrows was about to hit, a figure blitzed to Damien’s side.
Yuri didn’t have time to think about the consequences. She moved the moment the arrows were released, but with how close the Eidolon army was, she was barely fast enough.
Damien felt her soft body wrap around him tightly.
Then, in the very next moment, the world around him changed.
Chad moved as fast as he could, dragging Seris out of the way before using the goat-headed statue as cover. The next moment, arrows rained against the weathered stone, some shattering on impact while others embedded themselves deep into its surface.
After the arrows finally subsided, Chad cautiously peeked out from behind the goat-headed statue.
Damien and Yuri were gone.
Not dead, just gone.
His eyes immediately swept toward the entrance, but there was no sign of them there either.
The undead Eidolons Damien had ordered to push the siege weapon had actually made it back. The giant construct sat awkwardly near the entrance, exactly where it was supposed to be.
Unfortunately, the undead themselves weren’t so lucky.
Their bodies were riddled with arrows, some barely recognisable beneath the wooden shafts protruding from them. Moments later, black mist began leaking from their corpses as they collapsed one after another.
Then they disappeared completely.
"Wait here, Seris."
Chad rushed out from behind the goat-headed statue and immediately began turning the siege weapon around. This was their chance to strike back. Damien and Yuri were gone, and whether they were alive or dead didn’t change the situation in front of him. Right now, it was up to him to stop the Eidolons from taking the entrance.
"You guys, come and help out!"
He yelled towards Priesty and the other undead. They had remained inside the tunnel entrance during the arrow barrage, so unlike the others, they were still intact.
Priesty simply stared at Chad with his usual blank expression, as if he couldn’t understand a single word being said.
Chad grunted and pushed harder against the siege weapon, but the thing barely moved.
Finally giving up, he turned back towards the undead.
"Your master is gone. We need to use the siege weapon to fire back, otherwise the Eidolons are going to take the entrance and kill us all."
The only response he received were a few low growls from deeper within the line.
Chad rubbed his forehead.
"Come on, work with me here."
The undead continued staring.
At this point, Chad was already regretting the conversation. He needed the ballistas they were carrying, and he definitely needed the extra hands, but trying to negotiate with walking corpses was proving to be a complete waste of time.
"Think about it this way. If we keep fighting, your master will eventually return, and he’ll be proud of you."
Once again, Priesty simply stared.
Chad rested a hand on the siege weapon and sighed.
"What am I even doing? Of course you can’t understand me."
He shook his head helplessly.
Then something unexpected happened, a faint light suddenly flickered within Priesty’s eyes.
The undead priest turned his head towards the siege weapon before looking back at Chad. Moments later, he began walking forward, and the other undead followed behind him.
"What?"
Chad immediately stepped aside.
The undead surrounded the siege weapon and got to work. Some removed the arrows embedded in its frame while others dragged it around completely. Priesty himself adjusted the mechanism before helping reload the giant construct.
Within moments, the siege weapon was facing the Eidolon army.
The undead then stepped aside and left the firing position open.
Chad stood there for a second, completely flabbergasted.
"Oh... okay."
He quickly took control of the siege weapon and aimed it towards the distant Eidolon formations. What surprised him even more was the fact that they hadn’t advanced.
The army remained exactly where it was, standing in disciplined ranks beyond the snow. Their commander still hadn’t given the order to attack.
Chad didn’t wait for an invitation. The moment the siege weapon was ready, he released the mechanism with deadly intent.
The giant ballista screamed through the air.
A heartbeat later, it slammed into the Eidolon formation.
The tightly packed ranks offered almost no resistance. Several Eidolons were impaled instantly, their bodies bursting apart as the massive projectile tore through them. Others were simply flung aside by the sheer force of the impact, crashing into their comrades and breaking the neat formation they had maintained until now.
Chad’s chest rose fiercely as he watched the chaos spread through their ranks.
...
Not far behind the Eidolon formation, on top of a wide building, two silhouettes knelt in the cold snow.
Achew.
[Your undead has fallen]
[Your undead has fallen]
The familiar chime rang in Damien’s head as his cold blue eyes stayed locked in the direction of Chad and the siege weapon.
"What are you doing?" Yuri asked.
"I’m commanding the undead. Chad needs them to operate the siege weapon."
"Hm."
Yuri nodded softly, but the next moment a chill ran down her spine. She pushed herself up from the snow and drew her blade.
When she turned around, she froze in place. Her raw instincts screamed at her to run, but she could barely even speak, and it took all the nerve in her body to choke out.
"Ei. Eidolon Chief".
