Chapter 270: Tag Team

"Yeah," Bella agreed.

The magic alone, was enough to suggest it could fight against the Grand Class or someone close.

It was a different kind of creature entirely, and far stronger than the ones that could pass for S-tier bosses. But what they saw it doing was more troubling.

There was land where this creature stood amid the destruction.

And before it, was a reddish, portal-like structure. It had both hands stretched toward the opening as the edges of space around it continued to expand outward. More monsters poured through as the breach widened.

In that moment, they understood; the creature was the one facilitating the mini-invasion. It was pulling the winged creatures from their own plane into the breach zone, then pushing them into the world outside, while simultaneously sustaining the breach and feeding it continuously.

But then the creature turned its head upwards as it noticed them.

And from its head, a devastating reddish beam of energy fired out, tearing through the air toward Ethan and Bella at an insane speed. freewёbnoνel.com

Bella reacted almost instantly, raising a barrier of darkness that took the full impact. The force behind it was immense, pressing hard against her defense, but she held.

At the same time, newly emerged winged monsters from the red portal, surged upwards to meet their target.

But Bella didn’t drop the barrier. Instead, she reshaped it, compressing the darkness inward until it condensed into a dense sphere. Then she poured more power into it and sent it downward.

What had once been a shield became a blackhole.

The sphere dragged everything in its path into itself, swallowing the winged creatures entirely as it descended.

They didn’t even get the chance to resist. One after the other, they were pulled in, crushed, erased, until the mass of darkness reached the ground and carved out an entire section of space, leaving nothing behind.

The main creature, whatever this was, had already moved.

It leapt out of range just before impact, abandoning its position as the space it once stood disappeared into the blackhole.

The portal it had been sustaining flickered violently before shutting down, cutting off the flow of incoming winged beasts.

But the moment it landed elsewhere, Ethan was already on it.

A bluish streak of light tore through the air as he appeared behind the creature, driving Ragnarok toward its torso from the side.

The blade should have gone through; but the creature caught it in a fast reaction

Ethan didn’t pause however. His eyes flared with a whitish glow as lightning energy burst violently from his body, expanding outward and engulfing both of them.

The surge was intense and amplified to the point that the surrounding air distorted under the pressure. The creature let out a strained, distorted cry as the lightning tore through it, forcing its grip to loosen just enough.

That was all Ethan needed as an opening to deliver his next attack.

He pulled his fist back and drove it forward into the creature’s gut with the stack of every strength he could muster, creating such an impact that sent it flying across the air.

Ethan remained in place after the strike, but his jaw tightened as he flexed his hand. Before the regeneration that came after, blood had ran across his knuckles as the skin split from the force of the hit.

"...Tch."

That armor... it was the hardest thing he had ever punched.

But as the creature landed, it kicked up a massive smokescreen. The next moment, a reddish beam tore straight through the dust, slicing it apart as it surged toward Ethan at the same insane speed as before.

The monster had already recovered, seemingly unaffected by the previous attack.

Ethan knew immediately he couldn’t defend against it. That beam was at least Tier 8 in potency. None of his spells would hold, neither could he risk tanking.

So he moved out of its way; his body bursting into a streak of lightning and slipping clear of the path just in time as the beam carved through the space he had occupied a second earlier.

And in that same moment—

From the monster’s own shadow, spikes of darkness erupted upward, impaling straight through its body.

The Princess had just returned attack.

A distorted screech tore out of it, ripping through its mouthless face. But just as it cried out, a red portal formed beneath it and its body began to sink.

The shadow spikes flickered and vanished almost instantly as there was no longer any shadow beneath it to hold onto.

Bella’s eyes widened, following up with firing multiple projectiles of darkness at it.

Ethan reacted just as fast. In one fluid motion, he adjusted his grip on Ragnarok, holding the hilt as though it were the end of a spear.

Lightning surged violently along the blade as he forced energy into it, overriding whatever permission the weapon was meant to give.

Then he hurled it, and the sword tore forward like a bolt.

By then, most of the creature’s body had already sunk into the red portal, but the blade struck true, driving clean through its head.

It didn’t stop there however.

The force behind the throw ripped the head clean off its body, carrying it forward until it slammed into a raised piece of debris, pinning it in place.

A fraction of a second later, Bella’s projectiles arrived. They plunged straight into the portal after the rest of the body and then the portal sealed shut.

That moment made it clear that if Ethan had hesitated, even slightly with that throw, the creature might have escaped whole.

Ethan exhaled slowly, catching his breath.

They scanned the area, but there was no sign of the body re-emerging from any point within the breach.

"...At least we’re sure we killed the damn thing," he said.

He walked forward, gripping Ragnarok where it had been embedded, and yanked it free, lifting the severed head along with it.

"Good Job, Babe" Bella commended as she hovered down to ground level.

Ethan nodded with a smile, "You did the real work, but first...let’s get out of here"

And with that, they both flew out.

——

At a different part of the city

The office doors burst open without warning. "Mr. President—!"

The man at the desk quickly lifted his face towards the agent that rushed in, slightly out of breath, with urgency written all over his face.

"We have live activity," he continued quickly. "From Qeatol City. The drones just picked it up."

The President’s expression grew more concerned. "Put it up."

The agent pressed a few buttons as a a screen flickered to life on the wall. At first, it was just chaos, ruined streets, monsters flooding through shattered sections of the city, entire blocks twisted beyond recognition.

Then the footage changed to show figures moving through the destruction and fighting.

The President had shock in his eyes. "Who are they?"

The agent replied. "I don’t know sir, we’re yet to confirm but they’re not from around here"

The President’s gaze remained fixed on the screen. "Prepare a the cars immediately. We’re establishing contact,"

"Yes sir!" The Agent said before stepping out.

President Dwight Of the L.D.A, Lohansburg Defense Authority, stared continuously while wondering just one thing; was this their saving grace?
