Chapter 37: Spirit Attack
Arc stepped onto the soil of the enemy island, not before giving Zar a head start down into oblivion.
He wasn’t able to collect any more information aside from the fact that their leader had absorbed an Authority Card, but this confirmed his earlier suspicions that there were more Authority Devils in the starter zone.
He made a mental note to pay the Destroyer a visit after subduing this one. If possible, he wasn’t going to kill any Authority Devil he came across during this period when there was a better use for them.
Looking up ahead at the enemy island, it was easily bigger in size than theirs. He didn’t know where to start looking, but took a few steps forward when his ears pricked.
Arc quickly leaped back when a golden arrow came out of nowhere and struck the spot he’d been standing on, scattering dust and debris. Several more followed in quick succession, and he began dodging the arrows by a hair’s breadth.
The arrows were spread thin, and he was forced to continuously retreat while dodging them, till his feet skidded to the small gap that separated the two islands’ borders, when he paused and leaned all the way back just as an arrow whizzed past his face. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Arc crouched like a cat to stay low, and for a moment, the arrows didn’t come. Which made him realize the shooter wasn’t anywhere around him and was likely shooting all the way from deep within the island, but could somehow detect his presence.
This made him think of Jack’s Talent and how he could achieve this level of mastery with his [C-rank Presence] given time.
Arc knew the arrows were only warning shots and could get dangerous if the shooter became serious. But the same could be said for him as well, as his narrow dodges had only been for warm-up, and he was about to get serious.
Arc activated all his movement skills: Silver Steps, Swift Feet, and Light Heels. With a burst of agility boosted by the additional attributes of the three legendaries hovering around him, his surroundings had barely noticed when he shot forward like a cannon, and it was only a few moments later that the earth beneath where he’d been standing tore apart with a fierce afterwind.
The arrows came once more, more lethal and on target, like the shooter could barely keep up with his speed, but Arc was faster.
He pushed forward through the torrent of golden arrows, letting it lead him towards the hidden shooter, his mind sharp and focused.
When flying blades suddenly surged towards him from a direction, his daggers immediately came to life to counter them, deflecting the flying blades as they danced around Arc’s blurry form.
This was the second hidden enemy he was battling against. But not for a split second was he forced to slow down to dodge an attack.
Every one of his movement skills had a form and footwork to it that made it unique in its own way. Combining all those unique moves made Arc’s movement irregular and unpredictable, causing the arrows and flying blades to miss their target by a wide margin.
It wasn’t long before Arc shot out into an opening, but his neck was instantly met with a blade he skillfully dodged, maneuvering around the swordsman to keep chasing the archer, now in view on the balcony of a manor.
The small clearing was tightly packed with a few buildings that gave the island an urban look.
The metal-controlling assassin, having no place to hide, with the buildings becoming a hindrance to him, stepped out into the open as well, chasing after Arc as he controlled his blades with better precision at closer range.
Arc was up against the formidable swordsman and metal-controlling assassin up close, while dodging the relentless arrows.
He didn’t get a chance to attack, as that might put him in an undesirable position, so he didn’t. He also stopped running after the archer, solely focusing his mind on speed and defense, all while pushing his agility to the limit as he dodged every single attack by a hair’s breadth.
His stamina wasn’t the best, neither was his Constitution. So every time he failed to dodge at the perfect timing, Arc was scratched, grazed, or cut.
At first, they were minor injuries, but as time went on, they began accumulating as he got agitated by the dragging battle. When he came to realize he hadn’t noticed any of the three attackers use any skills besides their class basics, he immediately understood they were wearing him out and pushing his mental state to the point where he began to make mistakes that could be easily avoided with a focused mind.
Arc slowly shut his eyes amidst the onslaught, feeling his surroundings and letting his mind take control. He inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly through his mouth, putting his mind in an extreme state of calmness, as though he wasn’t in danger.
Don’t worry about whether what you step on can hold your weight. As long as you’re fast enough, water becomes solid ground, grass becomes solid ground, and even air becomes solid ground. The whole world is a flat path.
This was the popular quote of the Lightning Thief, the top Rogue player in his past life, who was one of the few Earthling players whose name entered the top 100 leaderboard rankings.
’As long as I’m fast enough...’
Arc repeated the quote as he began focusing more on his speed and less on where his foot landed. He stopped caring if there was any solid ground beneath his feet before he moved again. He didn’t care if it was just flying debris or fallen leaves, all while his eyes remained shut. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
He didn’t realize it, but his attackers were stumped when they saw Arc begin to move and shift in impossible ways, and their attacks began to feel slower and slower, until Arc was simply defying the laws of gravity, moving on the wind and running across the walls of buildings like they were flat ground.
The metal-controlling assassin was still trying to make sense of Arc’s movement when he didn’t notice a dagger sneak up behind him and exit through the front of his throat, dropping him dead.
While the swordsman was starting to use his fancy skills to end the battle quickly, Arc stopped running and faced him head-on, grabbing a dagger from the air as the others attacked him from all around.
The swordsman didn’t stand a chance when Arc left three swift strikes on him, and before he could react, a shadowy beast’s head materialized and tore him apart.
Arc didn’t waste any more time as he ran up the manor walls, appearing before the archer wielding two of his daggers. He used them to disrupt their nocked arrow before sending one of their arms flying with a clean strike, then their head.
Standing calmly behind the archer was a winged Avariel who neither retreated nor attacked. Arc found this personality familiar from the Silver Wolf Alpha Beast and immediately suspected the Avariel healer had something up her sleeves. But he believed he was faster.
He appeared before her with his daggers slashing at her when he noticed the Avariel suddenly flick her wrist, and Arc’s movement was abruptly stopped by a hidden force.
Several red strings resembling a spider’s web revealed themselves, knitted tightly all around him, binding his arms, legs, and even torso in place.
He had walked right into the Authority Devil’s trap.
The Avariel healer flicked her wrist once more, and a needle with a lingering red thread shot out of her sleeve and flew towards Arc’s face.
He didn’t panic and swiftly controlled his daggers to sever the threads and deflect the deadly needle, when it phased right through his daggers and went through his forehead, drawing a thin line of blood.
"Huh?"
Not just the needle, but the threads had been completely invisible to his daggers, which harmlessly phased through them.
It was at that moment Arc’s eyes widened in shock as he recognized the pattern.
Spirit attack.
He could barely struggle when the light slowly left his eyes, with a lingering thought in his mind.
’W-What?’
The world went blank.
