Chapter 115: Chapter 114 - The Failed Genius
Yui Kanzaki’s mystery was over in 24 hours. The group held out for just one day before they overwhelmed her with questions during lunch.
In the courtyard, she was sitting at a table when the group crowded around her with no escape options.
Akari, Aoi, Mina, Rika, Kuro and even Minami prevented Yui from leaving.
Yui blinked and said, "Am I under arrest?"
Akari dramatically pointed to Yui and demanded, "You must explain."
Yui said, "Explain what?"
Akari insisted, "You must explain how you failed medical school twice".
Yui casually replied, "Oh yes, that’s why this is a mystery, a tragedy and a national disaster".
Yui appeared far too happy at that moment. She sat back in her chair and said, "Okay, I’m going to tell you".
Everyone was listening, since they wanted to know why Yui was so intelligent but they didn’t know why until Yui pointed to herself and said, "First, I’m intelligent."
No one responded .
Akari, whose face turned white with anger said, "I think that’s suspicious"
Rika said, "That’s rude",
When in reality it was true, Yui really was very intelligent, painfully .
The issues for Yui weren’t her grades, it was all the other stuff.
Yui smiled and said, "Here’s my first example", and held up one finger .
"on my first examination, I overslept."
The crowd of friends all leaned forward and said, "What?"
Akari replied with "You overslept?"
"Did you say, you overslept, on that exam?"
"Yes, the same exam that decides what you’re going to be your entire life, the exam you prepared for months"
was all the crowd could say.
There’s a lot of fuss going on in the world.
Yui felt good about herself.
"I slept in for three hours today."
Everyone around the table stopped what they were doing.
Kuro was at a loss for words.
That’s a huge accomplishment.
That’s a scary accomplishment.
"What?"
Mina said.
"I didn’t set my alarm."
Everyone was emotionally scarred.
Yui kept going.
"My second time had a better outcome."
Finally.
Hope was found.
Then.
"I went to the wrong building."
Hope was lost.
"WHAT?!"
"To the wrong building."
"That has to be all true."
"I didn’t listen to the signs."
"I didn’t read my map."
"I didn’t listen to the staff."
The group was all quiet.
They all were staring at Yui.
Yui smiled.
"I learned a lot."
"No."
Kuro replied.
"You did not."
Yui laughed.
Rika was writing fast on her notepad.
This is more entertaining than fiction.
Much more entertaining.
Akari, all of a sudden, pointed to Yui and said.
"You are me as an adult."
The whole table went quiet.
Yui went quiet.
Minami went quiet.
Mina went quiet.
Even Aoi was stunned.
Akari was very sure of what she said.
"Now. I understand why things are like they are."
"No."
Yui said.
"Yes." freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"No."
"Yes."
"You’re not supposed to compare us."
"Why?"
"Because I’m older than you."
"That’s what is scary."
The whole table agreed with Yui.
Yui took a big blow emotionally.
For the first time, Yui looked offended.
"Minami."
"Don’t put me into it."
"Tell them."
"No."
"Let them know I’m responsible."
Minami laughed.
In actual fact, she was laughing.
It was a rare moment in time.
Minami issued a reluctant "No."
"Traitor."
"You’re impossible."
"And yet—lovable." ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"NO."
"YES."
"NO."
"YES."
The argument persisted.
This is when Yui raised another finger.
" The third was impossible but ."
Everyone prepared themselves for the unknown at this point.
"Anything is possible."
"I once lost my application documents."
Silence.
"How?"
"I put them somewhere safe."
Everyone groaned.
A universal phrase that has caused at least half of the world’s problems.
Somewhere Safe—never to be seen again.
"I found them six months later."
"WHERE?" Akari.
Yui pointed up to the ceiling.
"The freezer."
Silence.
Nobody was talking.
Nobody was moving.
Nobody wanted to know, but everyone needed to know.
"Why?" Kuro finally said.
Yui paused for a moment and thought, then shrugged.
"I don’t remember."
The table reached the apex of collective suffering.
Aoi sat quietly drinking her tea and came to a conclusion about Yui Kanzaki = Dangerous.
Not because she’s evil.
Not because she’s manipulative.
Because she has survived solely on luck.
An incredible and unpredictable force of nature.
The worst possible force of nature.
The conversation continued on.
The stories piled up.
Missed deadlines, lost calendars, forgotten appointments, wrong classrooms, wrong trains, wrong cities...
At one point, Yui accidentally went to a vet’s lecture instead of a medical lecture, and she stayed at the wrong lecture for three hours.
"How could you not know?" Minami asked.
"I thought they changed the curriculum".
Dead silence.
Kuro stared blankly into the distance.
It really is amazing that she is even alive.
Then, something unexpected happened.
The laughter grew fainter.
The conversation started to diminish in volume.
The conversation became more sincere.
Eventually, someone asked the question...
"You’re so smart...." Mina started to say.
"Why do you try keep trying?"
There was silence at the table.
The whole table was quiet.
There were no more jokes.
No more teasing.
Just curiosity.
Yui looked away.
She looked up into the sky.
She had a soft smile.
A different smile.
One you don’t see from her that often.
"Because I want to be a Doctor."
There it was.
Honest.
Real.
The first time that all.
Saw the determination in her.
The reason she continues to get up.
The reason she continues to try.
Even after she fails.
Twice.
No one spoke.
Then Minami finally broke the silence with a big, heavy sigh.
Then she looked at the others.
"Honestly."
Everyone turned to Minami.
"Yui is one of the smartest people that I have ever known".
Silence.
Yui froze.
She completely froze.
The reaction was instantaneous.
Her smile disappeared.
Her confidence disappeared.
She was gone.
For the first time since we began this story.
Yui was embarrassed.
Embarrassed for real.
Embarrassed from the bottom of her heart.
Yui’s face turned red.
Akari immediately pointed and said, "she’s blushing".
"Shut up"
"It’s True,
The loud laughter coming from the table of people exploded with laughter in response to Yui’s comment of ’AKARI’.
Even Kuro was able to smile.
Strangely, there seemed to be a satisfied look upon the face of Minami.
She had just been able to experience so many disasters and mistakes as well as failures, to know the truth - she knew Yui Kanzaki was no failure. But more than that, she knew Yui simply kept getting up each time she fell down.
One and two and three times and more - again - and again - and again.
Yet through all of the disasters, Yui was still a genius.
Somehow, through both, Yui was still Yui.
As everyone left the table, the lunch bell rang and everyone began to get up slowly.
Akari had continued to tease Yui while Yui was still in recovery mode.
Mina found herself laughing.
Rika had recorded every moment of the incident.
Aoi remained quiet and watched.
Minami continued to shake her head in disbelief at the fact that Kuro now understood everything.
The case as to Yui’s failure had been solved.
No one thought Yui was unsuccessful due to a lack of intelligence.
But Yui failed simply because she was Yui.
This seemed like the most logical explanation any one could have.
As the group gradually departed for their afternoon classes Yui sat for a brief pause.
Everyone else seemed busy but Akari was still arguing loudly, Mina was laughing, Rika was writing, Aoi was quietly observing and Kuro had begun walking away.
Minami followed shortly after him.
There was nothing strange about this.
And that is what most of you would think.
But Yui did not think as most do.
She observed the exchange between Minami and Kuro.
Minami called out to Kuro "Kuro"
And he turned to look immediately, not reluctantly, not with annoyance, but as if he just knew she would call him.
They exchanged a few words.
Nothing exciting.
Just the normal exchange of conversation.
But Yui noticed something.
The atmosphere between them seemed comfortable.
Unusually comfortable.
The kind of comfortable that builds over time.
The kind that develops without people realising it occurred.
Minami then handed Kuro some papers that she had forgotten to give to him earlier.
For just a second their fingers touched.
There was no response from either person.
And that was exactly what drew Yui’s attention.
Everyone else would have registered the feelings associated with the small moments such as finger touch.
These two people did not.
They had already become accustomed to physically being around each other.
Yui rested her chin upon her hand whilst a slow smile crept across her face.
Interesting.
Really interesting.
Kuro was immediately concerned for Minami when Yui first mentioned her name.
She also remembered the way Minami’s face would light up anytime Kuro was around.
Small, almost unnoticeable things.
However, there were still things people couldn’t miss.
Yui looked up to the sky and laughed to herself quietly.
"Ah."
A playful grin spread across her face.
"There’s a little glimmer."
Finally, Yui stopped concentrating only on Yui and began to plan more chaos.
