Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Escape, Corpse
"HUFF! HUFF! HUFF..."
Chen Yu gasped for breath, blood dripping from his fists.
The hyena-beast’s head had been utterly smashed, a gory mess of brain and pulp.
Gazing at the mangled hyena-beast, a sharp, foul stench assaulted his nostrils. Chen Yu’s stomach churned, but he managed to keep it down.
"Brother Yu, help me!"
Ma Xiang’s sudden cry rang out. Chen Yu looked up to see Ma Xiang sent flying by a hyena-beast. The massive creature opened its cavernous maw and lunged for him.
"WHOOSH—!"
In the nick of time, Chen Yu snatched a rock from the ground. With a burst of Qi, the fist-sized stone shot through the air.
"BANG!"
A perfect hit to the head. The immense force knocked the hyena-beast’s body aside, allowing Ma Xiang to roll away, narrowly avoiding its bloody jaws.
Chen Yu shot to his feet. Ignoring the blood and filth covering him, he exploded with power and charged straight for the hyena-beast.
"ROAR—!"
A roar echoed through the woods. The hyena-beast’s crimson eyes gleamed with killing intent. It leaped three to five meters into the air, riding a foul wind as it lunged at Chen Yu.
"BAM!"
Man and beast collided. Chen Yu’s fist slammed into the hyena-beast’s flank. Majestic power mixed with Qi, a punch of immense force that sent it flying.
"THUD!"
The massive hyena-beast crashed to the ground, making the earth tremble and kicking up a cloud of dust.
"SWISH—!"
In a flash, he closed the distance and stood before the hyena-beast.
His fists glowed with Qi. With the wind whistling from his strike, he brought a heavy punch crashing down.
"BANG! BANG! BANG!!!"
He attacked in the most primal way, swinging both fists, one after the other.
He aimed directly for the hyena-beast’s head.
Giving the hyena-beast no chance to react, he put his full power into every heavy blow!
"CRACK!!"
Dozens of punches later, the final blow landed, completely obliterating the hyena-beast’s head.
Brains and blood spilled across the ground, and the thick stench of gore filled the air.
Nearby, Ma Xiang stared dumbfounded at the scene, his pupils dilated.
"Hah..."
Seeing the hyena-beast was finally still, Chen Yu let out a soft sigh of relief.
Killing two hyena-beasts in a row had taken a significant toll on his stamina, and he only had twenty percent of his Qi left.
Getting to his feet, Chen Yu wiped the sweat from his brow.
’Without this physical reinforcement, we probably would have been the ones to die.’
With both hyena-beasts dead, the crisis was averted, at least for now.
"GULP~"
Ma Xiang finally snapped out of it. Watching Chen Yu stand up, he couldn’t help but swallow hard.
He simply couldn’t believe that Chen Yu had killed two hyena-beasts with his bare hands.
Just a short while ago, he had been unconscious and weak. How had he become so brave and invincible so quickly?
’Could he have been possessed by Superman?’
"Are you okay?"
Chen Yu asked, looking at Ma Xiang, who was staring intently at him. Ma Xiang shook his head, then stood up and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"I’m fine. Minor injuries. I won’t die."
"Brother Yu, how did you suddenly get so strong?" Ma Xiang asked, his face full of curiosity.
Chen Yu glanced at him. "I’d say I’ve awakened. Would you believe me?"
Chen Yu was just spouting nonsense.
Not all Extraordinaries in this world were the same. There was a special group: the Awakened!
To awaken was to obtain a special ability.
These special abilities were all different; the only limit was your imagination.
Awakening was also unpredictable. Some people awakened at birth, some at eighteen, and others not until they were eighty-eight.
Of course, not all Awakened had powerful abilities; some were quite useless.
This type of person was exceedingly rare. Most people could only follow the standard path of cultivation.
’Using ’awakening’ as a cover was an excellent excuse.’
’It was half-true, half-false. After all, a ’golden finger’ could be considered another form of "awakening"!’
"Awakened!!"
Ma Xiang stared wide-eyed, his face a picture of disbelief!
After three seconds of stunned silence, he grabbed Chen Yu’s arm. "Brother Yu, you really awakened?!"
Chen Yu nodded. "I guess so. My strength has increased a lot since I woke up."
"Increased strength... That’s a pretty good ability!" Ma Xiang said joyfully.
"It’s alright, I guess. But don’t tell anyone about this," Chen Yu said.
Ma Xiang nodded, a look of "I get it" on his face.
"I know, tall trees attract the wind. I won’t say a word," he said, patting his chest.
Chen Yu didn’t dwell on the subject and changed topics. "The smell of blood will attract other mutant beasts. We need to leave."
"Right." Ma Xiang nodded, and the two of them quickly departed.
The corpses lay quietly on the ground. The bodies of the hyena-beasts were foul-smelling and toxic, completely inedible. They had to be abandoned.
...
Beneath a blood-red sky, two figures moved swiftly through the wilderness.
As they ran toward the safety zone, Chen Yu used his Spirit Devouring Skill to recover his Qi.
The Spirit Devouring Skill was incredibly effective, allowing him to recover even while running.
His internal Qi had already recovered to ninety percent.
"Hm?"
While on the move, Chen Yu suddenly stopped. Not far ahead, a corpse lay on the ground.
It was disemboweled and mangled, with blood soaking the ground and staining the nearby grass red.
Beside the body was a blood-stained Alloy Long Saber.
The two exchanged a look and immediately hurried forward.
The corpse lay on the ground, its state of death horrific. A look of terror was frozen on its face.
"It’s Liu Yuan!"
Ma Xiang recognized the corpse’s face at once.
Chen Yu recognized him too.
Liu Yuan, one of the survivors who had been with them before.
And now he was dead.
Looking at Liu Yuan’s body, Chen Yu was deeply shaken.
’Half his body was gouged out. Such a gruesome death definitely wasn’t the work of a human.’
’There was only one possibility: a mutant beast did this!’
Chen Yu fought back his nausea, forced himself to calm down, and scanned his surroundings. Apart from Liu Yuan’s body, he saw no sign of the others.
He recalled that Liu Yuan had left with a group of four. Besides him, there should have been three others. But the other three were nowhere to be seen; they had probably escaped.
Or perhaps they were swallowed whole by a mutant beast.
"Looks like they ran into a powerful mutant beast. I wonder if Xu Bo and the others made it out alive," Ma Xiang said, snapping out of his daze, his face a little pale.
As fellow members of the same group of escapees, seeing Liu Yuan dead gave him a sorrowful pang for his own kind.
With four people, Liu Yuan’s group should have been able to handle a common level-one mutant beast. But against a Level 2, they would have been completely crushed.
Given the circumstances, it was highly likely they had encountered a Level 2 mutant beast, or perhaps something even stronger.
Chen Yu didn’t say anything. He crouched down, rolled the body over, and took a backpack from Liu Yuan’s corpse.
Opening the backpack, he found some bread, compressed biscuits, a few bottles of mineral water, a pack of Yellow Crane Tower cigarettes, and a lighter.
Chen Yu was delighted to see the supplies in the backpack.
’They hadn’t reached the safety zone yet, and food wasn’t easy to come by in the wilderness.’
"Let’s eat something and recover." Chen Yu took a piece of bread from the backpack and tossed it to Ma Xiang, then took one for himself.
Then, Chen Yu picked up the blood-stained Alloy Long Saber.
’With a weapon, their chances of survival had just gone up.’
After eating the bread and taking a sip of water, both of them felt much better.
Looking around, Ma Xiang said to Chen Yu, "Brother Yu, it’s getting dark. I don’t think we’ll make it to the Qing City Safety Zone today."
"We’ll find a hidden spot nearby to rest for the night and set out tomorrow," Chen Yu said.
Ma Xiang nodded.
The wilderness was even more dangerous at night, with a high probability of mutant beasts appearing.
Finding shelter was the top priority. After all, they had used up a lot of stamina and mental energy and needed to recover.
The two of them gave Liu Yuan’s body a simple burial and then quickly left the area.
...
Time trickled by, and the sky grew completely dark.
In the wilderness, the two figures appeared before a natural, hidden cave in a mountain hollow.
"Wait here. I’ll go in and check it out," Chen Yu said to Ma Xiang.
Ma Xiang nodded. Gripping the Alloy Long Saber, Chen Yu entered the cave. freewebnovёl.ƈom
The cave was quite deep, more than ten meters, and the space inside was not small. It was quite large, in fact. Other than rocks and branches, there was nothing else inside.
After checking it over and confirming there were no issues, Chen Yu came back out.
He scanned the area, then used the Alloy Long Saber to chop down a tree. He dragged it to the cave entrance and, in a few swift moves, hacked it into several pieces.
Using some rocks from the cave and the large branches, he concealed the entrance.
After spreading some dry grass on the ground, Ma Xiang lay down, not wanting to move a muscle.
"Eat something first, then rest. You’re tired, so sleep. I’ll take the first watch."
Chen Yu said, pulling out a piece of bread and a bottle of mineral water and handing them to him.
Ma Xiang nodded without a word, wolfing down the bread and water.
Chen Yu also ate a few compressed biscuits and drank some water. The supplies in the backpack were already running low.
After eating, Ma Xiang lay down and fell asleep.
He had been running all day, and his physical and mental energy were completely drained. He quickly drifted off to dreamland.
Chen Yu, however, sat on the dry grass and summoned his interface.
