Chapter 1346: Chapter 1344: The Canary and the Fire Phoenix
Yang Chen frowned and looked at Ye Xin.
Deep down he was strongly against Ye Xin going on the mission. He didn’t want Ye Xin to face any danger at all, let alone personally take part in such a dangerous operation.
Seeing Yang Chen’s gaze, Ye Xin understood what he was thinking. She let out a soft laugh, extended her slender jade-like finger, and hooked it lightly under Yang Chen’s chin—an action more like a man teasing a woman.
Without even realizing it, Yang Chen had just been flirted with!
"Do you think I can’t even handle something this small?" Ye Xin stared into Yang Chen’s eyes as she asked.
Looking into Ye Xin’s beautiful eyes, Yang Chen frowned and said, "You know I’m not worried about your capability, it’s just that..."
"If you’re not worried about my capability, then you should know I can handle this just fine. You know what I can do, so you know I absolutely won’t be in danger! This is very simple for me. Besides, you need someone to do this, and I’m the best candidate, aren’t I?" Ye Xin said, the corners of her lips curling slightly.
Yang Chen stayed silent.
"I don’t want to be a caged bird, and I’m not some canary either, you know that." Ye Xin looked deeply at Yang Chen.
Yang Chen trembled slightly at her words and stared at Ye Xin.
He had overlooked Ye Xin’s feelings.
All along, Ye Xin had always been very proactive; whenever there was something to be done, she would volunteer herself.
But Yang Chen was afraid she’d be in danger, so he always kept her at the back, hidden behind him. He forgot that all this time Ye Xin had been out there on her own, fighting solo and holding the line by herself!
And now he wanted her to hide behind him.
Maybe at first it felt novel, felt warm.
But given enough time, she would definitely be unable to tolerate such a situation.
She was capable; she was not some little girl who needed to be protected.
No one could bind her.
She was not a caged bird.
Even less a canary!
She was... a Fire Phoenix!
After a long moment, Yang Chen let out a deep sigh and said to Ye Xin, "I understand."
Hearing Yang Chen’s answer, a brilliant smile appeared at the corner of Ye Xin’s lips.
"You have to know, I can even protect you, you know!" As she spoke, Ye Xin flicked Yang Chen’s chin with her slender finger and blinked.
Utterly deadly!
If they weren’t in the experimental base, with a giant third wheel standing right beside them, Yang Chen really would’ve liked to grab Ye Xin and "ravage" her properly.
But right now... he could only hold it in.
"Ahem!" Yang Chen coughed once, shifting his attention.
"You heard her. This matter will be handled by Ye Xin. As for the business side of things, leave that to Zhao Feiyang."
"But Zhao Feiyang has been in Ancheng all this time..." Yang Cao said hesitantly.
Yang Chen said directly, "Have him come back. I’ll assign someone else to handle things in Ancheng, and I’m going over there myself as well—I’ll deal with it personally!"
"Alright! Understood!" Yang Cao nodded.
After Yang Chen finished reading the documents and asked Yang Cao a few questions, he had Yang Cao take him to another room.
Takamoto Oe!
A mad scientist.
A crazed researcher, an experiment maniac!
His head was filled with radical ideas, and he had very deep knowledge in biology.
As for those human experiments in Futian Mansion back then, they were all Takamoto Oe’s doing.
Takamoto Oe’s room wasn’t like Futian Xiongchun’s. There was nothing hard in here; everything was soft, and there wasn’t even a bed!
Even so, Takamoto Oe would still occasionally let out a hysterical roar, smashing his head against the wall. He had even torn through the padded wall, exposing the sponge inside.
Yang Chen frowned and asked, "Has Takamoto Oe always been like this?"
Yang Cao shook his head. "He is indeed very radical, but at first he wasn’t this crazy. In fact, not long ago he even requested to continue experimenting. After we refused him, he started becoming like this."
Yang Chen raised an eyebrow. "So you’re saying he’s still a research fanatic, with only experiments in his eyes?"
Yang Cao shook his head. "Besides being a research fanatic, he’s also a crazed racist!"
Yang Chen let out a cold laugh. "Then there’s no real reason to keep him. Have we squeezed anything out of him?"
"A lot!" Yang Cao handed the documents to Yang Chen.
Yang Chen took the documents and flipped through them.
Takamoto Oe was a researcher transferred from Beihai Country. He had always been obsessed with research and didn’t know much about other classified intelligence, so there wasn’t too much valuable intel. However, there was a lot of material related to his research, as well as Beihai Country’s purpose in obtaining the parasites.
"Takamoto Oe said he knew the thing spread out from Flame Country, but the Northern Federation has already started studying it and has demonstrated the terrifying capabilities of the parasite to their upper echelons. That attracted the attention of Beihai Country’s leaders, which is why they were willing to do anything to get the parasite. In his view, future wars are wars of technology; whether electronic tech or biotech, both are means of competition. He said that in future battlefields there may be steel cannons, or there may be manufactured super soldiers. The only certain thing is that the country that controls powerful technology will control the future. They can’t afford to fall behind in this area, so that’s why they’re doing this," Yang Cao said.
Yang Chen snorted coldly, clearly displeased with Takamoto Oe’s words.
He pondered for a while, then said to Yang Cao, "Set up an independent lab for him. Monitor his every move and squeeze out his last bit of potential!"
"Yes!" Yang Cao nodded.
"Take me to see your experimental results," Yang Chen said, handing the documents back to Yang Cao. He didn’t even want to look at Takamoto Oe again.
"This way!" Yang Cao led the way in front.
Up three floors.
The test hall.
This was where Yang Cao conducted his experiments; most of the work was done here.
Under Yang Cao’s lead, they entered the test hall.
In the test hall, the most eye-catching thing was several large nutrient pods, inside which stood "monsters" covered in tubes. These were the ones Yang Chen had captured from Futian Mansion.
Seeing them, Yang Chen asked, "How are they doing?"
He knew these people were citizens of Flame Country who had been captured by their own people, and he felt a pang of compassion.
Yang Cao sighed and said, "There’s nothing we can do. They’ve been completely parasitized and have no subjective consciousness anymore. Right now we’re suppressing them with drugs. Once released, they’ll undergo狂乱 mutation; more or less... they’ll all turn into monsters like this!"
Yang Cao pointed at the two beside them.
Yang Chen knew one of them was a mutated monster; he had even fought it before.
The other looked like some kind of werewolf-like creature, something he hadn’t seen yet—clearly a recent mutation.
Yang Cao explained, "This is our first test subject. Through guided mutation, it transformed into a werewolf form and has some of a werewolf’s traits. It has no consciousness, kills crazily, and is very hard to subdue... In terms of combat power... it should at least be equivalent to a special operations team like the Dawn Squad! But its adaptability and combat experience are very poor; it relies on brute strength and can’t withstand heavy weapons. A single incendiary bomb can wipe it out completely!"
Yang Chen slowly nodded, frowning as he pondered.
