Chapter 1326: Chapter 1324: A Major Life Event
Yang Chen was all set to learn from Gao Zhenggen, but was taken aback when he heard Gao Zhenggen speak.
Gao Zhenggen continued, "You married a daughter of the Ye family, so you’ll enjoy wealth and honor for life. Why bother learning to cook? Right? Don’t make trouble for yourself! Even if you learn, you won’t need it, and it’d be a waste to let the skill go to waste!"
Yang Chen frowned, "Old Gao, I don’t think any profession is higher or lower. Be it a chef or any other field, everyone is equal, making a living through their skills."
Gao Zhenggen paused in his chess play and looked at Master Ye.
Master Ye just smiled faintly without saying anything.
Gao Zhenggen stood up and looked at Yang Chen.
This allowed Yang Chen to see Gao Zhenggen’s face clearly.
The elder in front of him seemed to be in his eighties or nineties, his face full of wrinkles, hair silver, his eyes somewhat cloudy but still full of spirit.
"So tell me, after marrying a girl from the Ye family, can you become a chef? Do you think being a chef or pursuing an official career is better?" Gao Zhenggen asked.
Yang Chen replied, "Both are about making life better, I think there’s no difference."
"Oh?" Gao Zhenggen’s eyes lit up.
Yang Chen said, "Whether pursuing an official career or being a chef, everyone’s goal is the same. Becoming an official is about benefiting the people, prospering the nation, enriching the people, and making life better for everyone. A chef’s purpose is to create what people pursue in beauty. If people did not aspire for a better life, why would they pursue good food? Without such aspirations, primitive humans wouldn’t have taken the path of evolution."
"Well said!" Gao Zhenggen clapped, "Nicely spoken!"
Yang Chen smiled. Though he wasn’t a politician good at speaking, he was used to teaching, so talking came effortlessly.
"Do you want to learn from me?" asked Gao Zhenggen.
Yang Chen nodded, "I hear your cooking skills are exceptional, even known as a Golden Knife Chef. I would like to learn from you, to pick up a few things."
Gao Zhenggen looked at Yang Chen, "I won’t give you any special treatment just because you’re the Ye family’s son-in-law. If you want to learn from me, you have to show me something impressive; otherwise, this old man who’s half in the ground doesn’t have time to teach you."
Yang Chen replied seriously, "Please instruct me as you will!"
"Follow me." Gao Zhenggen turned and headed inside.
Yang Chen followed.
Master Ye and Ye Xin cheerfully followed along.
At the kitchen counter, Master Ye pointed to a radish on the table, "Slice this for me."
"Alright!" Yang Chen immediately stepped up, picked up the knife next to him, pressed down on the radish, and began to slice.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
The sound of the knife against the cutting board was quick and even.
Gao Zhenggen’s eyes lit up.
Yang Chen’s slicing was so fast that all one could see was a flash of the knife, and the radish seemed unchanged afterward.
Though a regular person might not notice, Gao Zhenggen saw it clearly.
The speed was remarkable, and the slices were so thin that the radish seemed untouched.
"All done!" Yang Chen lifted the knife and placed it aside, addressing Gao Zhenggen.
The radish still sat in the middle of the board, as if it hadn’t been touched.
Gao Zhenggen stepped closer, gently nudged the radish from behind.
Instantly, the radish tilted over, revealing the cuts.
Gao Zhenggen picked up a slice, held it up to the light, thin and translucent.
He picked up another slice; they were all evenly thick and neat.
Gao Zhenggen was surprised; he hadn’t expected Yang Chen to have such knife skills.
"Have you learned to cook before?" Gao Zhenggen asked.
"No."
"What was your profession?"
"Guard."
"Professional Guard?"
"Yes!"
"Have you been to the hall?"
"Once."
"Did you eat there?"
"Yes."
"Ha! Then you might have eaten my cooking."
"No, by the time I went, you had retired."
"Right." Gao Zhenggen said with a sigh.
"Nice knife skills, how did you practice?" Gao Zhenggen asked Yang Chen.
How could a professional guard slice like this? Was he a part of the cooking team?
Yang Chen explained, "Special guard, proficient with cold weapons, practice makes perfect."
Yang Chen said it lightly, but it left Gao Zhenggen surprised.
The phrase "practice makes perfect" revealed a lot.
For chefs practicing knife skills, it’s about practice making perfect. But Yang Chen could do it so seamlessly and effortlessly in slicing radishes, which showed how familiar he was with knives!
"Seems like marrying a daughter from the Ye family wasn’t pure luck; you’ve got real skills!" Gao Zhenggen smiled.
Yang Chen glanced at Ye Xin, whose cheeks were slightly red, "I won’t deny it, facts are facts."
Gao Zhenggen burst into laughter, "You kid!"
Yang Chen grinned, looking at Ye Xin.
Ye Xin mouthed, "Shameless!"
Too narcissistic.
Anyway, Yang Chen’s performance pleased Gao Zhenggen greatly.
"Alright, whatever you want to learn, I’ll teach you!" Gao Zhenggen waved his hand.
Ye Xin was happy for Yang Chen, giving him a tug.
Yang Chen thanked Gao Zhenggen, "Thanks, Old Gao!"
Ye Xin also excitedly said, "Grandpa Gao! You must teach him well; he cooks so well already, and learning from you, I’ll be in for a treat!"
"Oh? He’s been cooking often? Talented; what does he usually cook?" Gao Zhenggen asked.
Yang Chen humbly said, "Just some home-style dishes, I haven’t learned much about domestic cooking, but I did spend some time abroad and learned some foreign cuisine, which I’m quite good at."
Gao Zhenggen nodded, "Times are different now, blending and learning the essence is trendy, it’s good."
He smacked his lips, "Well... I’m full today. Tomorrow, let me try your cooking, then I’ll decide how to teach you."
"Alright! Thank you, Old Gao!" Yang Chen was delighted.
Gao Zhenggen was pleased as well but waved them off, "Go on, go on! You young ones, hurry back and rest. I’ll play chess with your grandpa."
Ye Xin blushed and pinched Yang Chen on the waist.
Yang Chen grinned, smiling at the two, and left with Ye Xin.
As they left the yard, Yang Chen whispered, "See how considerate Old Gao is? He knows we have important things to do tonight, so he didn’t hold us up."
Ye Xin blushingly glared at Yang Chen, "You rascal, saying those things, who has important things to do with you!"
Ye Xin, looking shy in her charming manner, made Yang Chen’s heart race, and he couldn’t help but hold Ye Xin closer, "Life’s important events aren’t for you to say no to!"
