Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Sweater
"What are you thinking, I am not a human trafficker." Chen Ze rolled his eyes, he was not so insanely depraved.
"Then what does the noble lord need us to do..." Before getting a clear answer, Andrew wasn’t about to dive into this delicious-smelling porridge.
Even in the Holy City of the Church of Light – the City of Holy Glory – there existed darkness unimaginable to common folk.
"Don’t trust the big shots, those high and mighty nobles; they might seem caring on the surface but often vent their lust by purchasing slaves in secret." This was a piece of advice from an elder brother who had escaped from the clutches of a wealthy noble.
Andrew took these words to heart, and also remembered the fact that some nobles had a particular fondness for young girls.
The question Andrew asked posed a bit of a dilemma for Chen Ze; he couldn’t find anything that the Nafi siblings could do.
Washing dishes, cleaning tables, he already had Betty for that, and Chen Ze didn’t want to take on two more wait staff – that would be too troublesome and useless.
But in an ordinary restaurant, there were not many things to do, and many of them were beyond the capability of the Nafi siblings.
Watching Chen Ze hesitating, the suspicion in Andrew’s eyes grew even more intense.
"Alright, I’ll just be honest with you." Chen Ze spread his hands in resignation, as he truly had no other excuses left.
"This is a restaurant, for now, you can owe me, and pay for the meal next time." Chen Ze shrugged.
"A restaurant..." Andrew looked around, indeed, although this place was strange, it did resemble a restaurant.
"We’re sorry, we..." Andrew shook his head; he didn’t plan on staying any longer. Someone who kept a succubus surely couldn’t be a good person.
After all, in the City of Holy Glory, Andrew had heard plenty of stories about demons killing people, and among those dark tales, many uncles were particularly keen on telling stories about the evil succubi. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Although Andrew felt that those uncles had a rather lecherous air about them whenever they talked about succubi.
"Gurgle..." Before he could finish speaking, Elena’s stomach made a particularly loud growling noise.
Andrew turned at the sound and saw his sister, although shyly hanging her head, was still constantly glancing at the large pot in front of her.
When had they last eaten their fill? Andrew didn’t remember, but he did recall that even when he gave his share of food to his sister, the three days’ rations for the siblings were only enough for one ordinary person’s breakfast.
"Thank you, noble lord..." Under the cruel reality, Andrew lowered his head.
Even if Chen Ze truly harbored bad intentions, Andrew had no other option. There was nothing to eat if they returned home; in the City of Holy Glory under a heavy snowfall, two more frozen street urchins wouldn’t be missed.
Chen Ze nodded, too lazy to correct the siblings’ form of address. Noble lord it shall be, which was still better than being referred to as Betty’s master.
Watching Chen Ze enter the kitchen again, Elena couldn’t wait to lift the lid off the pot and scooped several spoonfuls of steaming hot porridge.
"Brother, eat up!" Elena handed the first bowl to Andrew and then scooped up another one for herself.
The warm porridge was consumed, flowing into their stomachs, warming the bodies and souls of the Nafi siblings.
It had a bit of saltiness along with some sweetness, but it was delicious, and there were even fresh green vegetables and fresh meat!
Elena felt like she was in the Kingdom of God – this thick porridge was so much tastier than the relief porridge distributed by the Church of Light, and it was more porridge-like.
The Church’s serving was just water, plus there were fresh green vegetables in this bowl, which were a luxury in the City of Holy Glory at this time.
Not to mention the meat. Elena nibbled on the cubed meat, which with a single bite could have been swallowed, but she chewed on it deliberately for more than a dozen times, until there was nothing left to chew.
Elena ate to her heart’s content.
Andrew, however, wasn’t concerned about that; his attention was on the saltiness of the porridge—the taste of salt.
So pure, without the bitterness of the salt stone they licked, Andrew felt he had regained his strength.
Indeed, lacking salt could lead to real trouble. Andrew and his band of little vagabonds also received a small salt stone from the Church of Light, their ration for the year.
"He really must be a nobleman..." Andrew shook his head, confirming the thought in his mind.
After all, such pure salt, surely the pale yellow kind found only on a nobleman’s dining table.
A little bottle could cost a Gold Coin, luxury goods!
Andrew became somewhat worried; he didn’t know how much salt had been used in the pot of porridge, and wondered if it really came to repayment in the future, whether he and his sister could afford to pay it back at all.
In fact, Chen Ze had no intention of making them pay for the meal. He had already gone up to the second floor, having just heard the siblings mention how cold it was.
Since it wasn’t possible to let them stay over the winter, giving them some warm clothing was the least Chen Ze could do for now.
When Chen Ze came down with two sweaters in hand, the Nafi siblings had already scraped the pot of porridge clean, and he even saw Elena happily licking the pot with a contented expression.
"How miserable their lives must be..." Chen Ze could hardly bear to look.
If Chen Ze knew that Andrew had specifically let his sister lick the pot, he would not have known what to think.
"Noble lord!" Andrew saw Chen Ze and hurriedly stood up to greet him.
Chen Ze tossed the two sweaters over to them and then asked, "Have you eaten your fill?"
"I have!" Elena lifted her head, looking blissful, with a grain of rice still on her lips.
"Put on the clothes and go back home. You can come again tomorrow," Chen Ze scratched his head. After all, it was just a pot of porridge, which meant nothing to him.
"This..." Andrew’s eyes were red.
Chen Ze patted his shoulder. "Since you could see the door to my restaurant and come in, it means you’re fated to be here."
"Just work hard to earn money and find an opportunity to pay me back."
That was the last thing Andrew heard.
"Brother, it’s really not so cold anymore!" Elena was overjoyed, touching the sweater hidden beneath her tattered clothes; it was very warm. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
Andrew shook his head; he couldn’t remember how he had left or how he had put on the sweater following Chen Ze’s direction.
Looking back at the door that had vanished into thin air, Andrew touched the sweater on his body that shielded him from the cold and clenched his fists.
"Sister, we can survive this winter. Next spring, I plan to try to become a Paladin at the Church. We owe a big debt!" Andrew ruffled his sister’s hair, resolute.
What’s the trial for a Paladin? I’m not afraid of death, so what’s there to fear?
Andrew was full of resolve.
A faint trace of energy quietly circulated in his body, and yet Andrew remained unaware.
