Chapter 128: Chapter Twenty: Death Approaches

"Dear Mr. Modkaiser, I hereby extend an invitation to you, please be sure to attend your death party this evening." In the grand manor, Count Modkaiser was perusing the letter that had mysteriously appeared on his desk that morning.

"Mage Narian, what do you make of this?" Count Modkaiser handed the letter to the Mage by his side.

"Very ordinary paper, no magic fluctuations, the sender is a little girl?" Narian frowned as he looked over the letter in his hands.

It was clear that this was a threatening letter, or rather, a death notice. However, to dare send a threatening letter within the territory of a ruling Count, one had to admit that this "little girl" had quite the audacity.

"Hah, these vile creatures somehow sneaked into my study and didn’t take a thing, just left this letter," Count Modkaiser said with seething anger.

This was his own domain! His own castle! And yet, a letter of threat had been delivered by some shadowy figure?

How exactly did this contemptible person manage it?

"Rest assured, my lord Count, the Mage Association can ensure your safety," Narian patted his chest confidently.

"Count Modkaiser, the Church will also arrange a squad of knights to guard you," the Bishop said with a smile as he walked in.

"Praise be to the God of Light, I am grateful for your blessing," Count Modkaiser quickly stood up. Although he did not believe in the God of Light himself, he still had to maintain appearances in front of the Bishop.

Looking at the formidable squad of knights and the strength of the 7th-tier Knight Commander, Count Modkaiser felt much better. Plus, with an 8th-tier Mage, he believed he would be safe no matter what.

"Master," the Butler stood behind Count Modkaiser.

"Did you get it out of her?" Count Modkaiser toyed with the Magic Amulet in his hands, an item he had exchanged for 20,000 Gold Coins from the Mage Association.

"I’m sorry, Master, the maid said she knows nothing," the Butler shook his head; he had just used a hammer to shatter all of the maid’s fingers.

"Hmph!" Count Modkaiser snorted coldly.

"She is the only one responsible for cleaning my study. How could she know nothing?" Count Modkaiser walked to his desk, playing with his pet Thundercloud Bird.

"I recall that wretched girl has parents and siblings, does she not?" Count Modkaiser fed his precious pet with interest.

"Indeed, Master," the Butler nodded.

"Bring those peasants here, and in front of that wretch, kill them one by one. Leave it to Francis, and tell him my garden is short on fertilizer lately." The Butler silently exited the study.

Left to Francis? It seemed that by the next day, that family would be turned into countless pieces of flesh.

The Butler sighed inwardly; he could tell that the maid had not lied, but the Count needed an outlet for his rage.

As night fell, darkness enveloped the world, also shrouding the pleading wails of agony.

"Don’t worry, my lord Count, we will certainly capture that audacious assassin," Knight Commander Jack patted his chest confidently.

"Thank you, Knight Commander Jack, this is the donation I’ve made to the Church, please make sure to accept it," Count Modkaiser said with a smile, handing a bag of Gold Coins to Jack.

Suddenly, the castle that had been brightly lit plunged into endless darkness.

"What is this?" Count Modkaiser’s eyes widened as he tried to grasp the hand of the Knight Commander in front of him.

Although it was somewhat undignified, Count Modkaiser felt that his own life was more important.

However, Count Modkaiser grasped at nothing; silence surrounded him, with no sound at all, nor the sounds of battle.

Count Modkaiser touched the ring on his hand in terror, and its glowing light was released.

As light shone back in the banquet hall, Count Modkaiser looked around in horror—the banquet hall, which had been bustling just moments ago, was now empty except for himself, and everywhere was blood, but there were no bodies to be seen.

Count Modkaiser swallowed hard and stood up with effort. In his bedroom, there was a gemstone that could transport him to the front steps of the Mage Association.

The silent darkness of the night was broken when a sharp object scraping against the wall sound emanated from outside the banquet hall, eventually stopping at the entrance.

Count Modkaiser fled swiftly, understanding that it certainly couldn’t be Knight Commander Jack outside; the killer had arrived.

"Ding-dong~ I know you can hear me~" A knocking sound came from the door, childishly innocent, as if it were a little girl speaking.

Count Modkaiser pushed against the door in front of him, but it wouldn’t budge, locked tight.

"Open up, I just want to play with you~" The knocking grew more urgent.

Count Modkaiser, trembling, fumbled with his keys, but time and again, failed to insert them, leaving scratch after scratch on the door lock.

The knocking suddenly ceased, and Count Modkaiser looked at the banquet hall door in surprise; it remained unopened.

This inexplicably brought him a sigh of relief.

"Thump thump." The knocking sound was now right beside him.

Count Modkaiser turned his head and saw on the window next to him, a terrifying face had appeared.

A little girl, hands pressed against the glass, staring intently at him. Even more eerie was the fact that her face was upside down, her mouth on top and her eyes below.

"I see you~" The little girl spread into a smile, then disappeared once more.

Count Modkaiser pushed the door open and sprinted up the stairs, convinced that what he saw wasn’t human; no one’s neck could twist like that!

"Ah!" Count Modkaiser grabbed his hand in pain as the finger wearing the Magic Ring was severed.

"I’m in the banquet hall now~ I’m coming to find you~" The girl’s adorable voice now seemed like that of a death-summoning devil.

Count Modkaiser, teeth clenched, holding his wound, hurried toward his bedroom. He didn’t dare to speak, fearing the devil might hear him.

The usual staircase seemed endlessly long, and Count Modkaiser could even hear the little girl humming a strange tune.

Count Modkaiser reached the second floor; he rushed toward his bedroom, but the bedroom door was locked. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

"I’m at the staircase now~ I can see your blood~" The little girl’s voice rang out, followed by the sound of steps ascending the stairs.

Count Modkaiser trembled; the bedroom was locked, and looking around the darkness, he remembered a large suit of knight’s armor nearby, with enough space behind it to hide.

Count Modkaiser squeezed himself into the tight gap.

"I’m on the second floor now~" The little girl walked slowly over, humming her song.

"Could you be in this room~" The girl pushed a door open.

"But you’re not here~ I wonder if you might be in the bedroom~" The bedroom door was opened.

"Not here either~ Then you must be in this room~" Another door was pushed open by the girl.

"I’m coming down to find you now~" The girl’s voice descending the stairs echoed through the hallway.

Then there was silence. Count Modkaiser hid for a long time before he slowly crawled out and walked towards the bedroom.

"It’s safe now..." Count Modkaiser thought to himself.

As he pushed the door open, Count Modkaiser saw the upside-down faced little girl looking at him with a sinister expression.

"Finally found you~ darling~ Losing means paying the price~"
