Chapter 39: 39. The Veiled Colosseum: Floor 1

The silver swallowed Nathan whole.

For a long, confusing moment, there was nothing—no ground, no sky, no up or down. Just the cold veil touching his skin and the Tower’s magic humming in his bones. Then his feet landed on cracked marble floor, and the world came back into focus.

The first floor of the Veiled Colosseum was a ruined arena. Fallen columns lay scattered across the ground. Old warrior statues stood on broken pedestals, their faces worn smooth by age or magic... or both. The marble floor was cracked, its patterns hidden by silver mist that moved as if it had a will of its own. The veil wasn’t just something he saw... it pressed on his mind, a dull buzz that made it hard to judge distance and made every echo feel like danger.

His interface flickered.

[Ding! Floor 1: The Shattered Arena.]

[Objective: Reach the exit portal before the opposing party.]

His party appeared around him one after another. Garrett stumbled forward two steps and steadied himself on Red’s crimson wool. The Mad-Sheep blinked its four black eyes one at a time, its horns glowing faintly in the silver light. Dillon landed lightly, hand already on his katana, his Cloud Serpent tightening its coil around his shoulders. Elise appeared last, standing perfectly still. Her Frost Golem loomed like a pale giant in the mist, and the cold it gave off made the veil curl away in thin wisps.

Nathan felt Mirko and Kuro—still in bunny form—perch on his shoulders. They waited.

"Stay close," Nathan ordered. His voice sounded odd in the veil, muffled, then too sharp. "The veil tricks your senses. Trust my directions, not your eyes. We’ve practiced for this."

"Practiced, yes," Dillon muttered, drawing his katana. "But we’ve never faced this. This mist feels like it’s reading my mind."

"Then think boring thoughts."

"My thoughts are never boring."

"Try."

---

Floor 1’s monsters emerged from the mist like living nightmares.

Veil Wisps were made of the same silver haze that filled the arena. Their bodies flickered between solid and vapor. When they attacked, they formed human-like torsos with long claws. When they pulled back, they dissolved into the fog, impossible to spot.

Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] at Level 5 cut through the haze clearly. He tracked eight targets at once, their movements, their timing, the mana pulses before each strike. The information flooded his mind, sharp and clean.

"Left flank, three. Garrett, hold. Dillon, two o’clock. They’re phasing behind you. Elise, the big one in the middle."

The party moved like a well-oiled machine.

Garrett braced his mace as Red’s wool hardened into armor. The Mad-Sheep stood between the wisps and its master. Dillon’s [Quick Draw] flashed—his katana sliced a wisp mid-form. Elise’s Frost Golem smashed the mist, each blow scattering wisps into vapor that took seconds to reform.

Mirko shifted to humanoid form in a green flash, [Impenetrable Fortress] flaring as she blocked two wisps at once. Her blade cut through the fog with deadly precision.

Kuro stayed in bunny form on Nathan’s shoulder. Her [Weak Point Sense] fed him vulnerabilities through their link, showing exactly where to strike.

[Mana Arrow]. A wisp shattered. [Mana Arrow]. Another dissolved. [Focus Shot]—half-charged—pierced three wisps lined up together.

The first wave dissolved into mist.

[Ding! First Wave Cleared!]

[Opposing Party: Entered Floor 1. Current Progress: 12%.]

"They’re ahead," Garrett said, breathing hard. Silver droplets from the wisps dotted Red’s wool and quickly evaporated.

"Then we catch up." Nathan moved forward. "Stay on a tight Formation and Stay within sight."

---

The arena seemed endless, its edges lost in silver fog. Nathan navigated with [Hunter’s Insight], the exit portal shone like a beacon at the far end. The veil thickened and thinned in wave-like patterns.

Halfway across, the mist parted like a curtain.

Nathan saw them.

Derek’s party moved along the eastern edge, about sixty meters away. Derek led, his B-Rank Salamander radiating heat that pushed back the veil. Tyler flanked left with his E-Rank Rock Hound. Reid hung back with his D-Rank Sky Fairy hovering nearby.

At the rear, Marcus Kade moved with calm confidence. His massive greatsword hung loosely in one hand. Veil Wisps dissolved around him like flies he barely noticed.

Their eyes met across the distance.

Derek stopped. His expression shifted from surprise to confusion, then to something like horror as he spotted Mirko. Tall, green-haired, Voluptuous and curvy with her sword drawn, pink eyes blazing through the fog.

"What the hell?!" His voice cut through the arena. "Who... No, What IS that?!"

Tyler and Reid followed his gaze.

Tyler’s jaw dropped. His Rock Hound growled, but he wasn’t paying attention. His eyes were fixed on Mirko’s curves, tracing the ornate bodysuit with an expression of awe. "Is that... is that the bunny? The little green bunny? That’s... she’s—"

"She’s huge," Reid finished, transfixed on her bossoms. His Sky Fairy chimed in annoyance, ignored. "That’s not a bunny. What IS that?"

"Dark magic!" Derek shouted. "It has to be! An F-Rank can’t get a humanoid! You’re using forbidden magic, Cross! The TCA will hear about this—my family will—"

"I... Am a Knight, actually," Mirko called back. "No dark magic here. Just pure grit and talent." She tilted her head, ears twitching. "Something you wouldn’t recognize."

Derek’s face twisted. His Salamander hissed, flames flaring. For a moment, he looked ready to attack.

Marcus Kade cut through the tension. "Huh. A humanoid bunny Knight. That’s new." He rested his greatsword on his shoulder, his face showing faint interest. "You’re full of surprises, Cross. No wonder the kid’s upset."

"I’m not upset!" Derek snapped. "This is... cheating!"

"Cheating means breaking rules." Kade’s flat gaze turned to Derek. "The Tower hasn’t flagged him, The TCA hasn’t penalized him. Whatever he’s doing, it’s legal. Be mad later. Right now, clear the floor."

Derek’s fists clenched. Tyler and Reid stole more glances at Mirko, making Nathan’s jaw tighten.

Then the veil closed between them as they moved.

"They’re heading for the exit," Nathan said, voice cold. "Move. Now."

---

The final chamber was wide and circular, the veil thin enough to see through. The exit portal... a vertical pool of silver light... pulsed at the center. Both parties emerged from opposite sides at the same time.

The last Veil Wisps dissolved between them.

Derek’s party stood closer to the portal. Derek was at its edge, his Salamander’s heat rippling the silver light. Tyler and Reid flanked him, their earlier shock turning to resentment and jealousy. "It should’ve been me!" They both simultaneously thought as they stole glances at mirko.

Marcus Kade stood apart, greatsword ready, face unreadable.

Mirko stayed in humanoid form beside Nathan. Kuro sat silent on his shoulder, tracking every move.

Derek stared at Mirko like she was a threat. "This isn’t over, Cross. At Floor 10—"

"You’ll what?" Nathan asked. "Throw more money at it?"

Derek flushed. Tyler and Reid looked away—but their eyes kept drifting back to Mirko with a mix of fear, greed and fascination.

Marcus Kade chuckled. "When I took this contract, I figured it’d be boring. F-Grade summoner, bunny pet, quick win." He glanced at Mirko. "Didn’t expect the bunny to turn into an amazonian warrior. You’re making this very interesting for me."

"Glad to entertain."

"Hm." Kade’s eyes shifted to Kuro on Nathan’s shoulder—small, black, still. Her white markings caught the silver light. He studied her a moment too long. "Two bunnies. One’s a Knight. What does the other do?"

Nathan didn’t answer.

Kade smirked. "Keep your secrets then." He turned to the portal. "Floor 10, Cross. That’s where it counts. Don’t disappoint me."

He stepped through. Derek’s party followed—Tyler and Reid glancing back at Mirko, Derek refusing to look. Then they were gone.

The exit portal waited.

Garrett exhaled. "That was tense."

"She’s got fans," Dillon said, nodding toward the portal. "Did you see those two? Couldn’t stop staring. I think the rock-dog guy was drooling."

"The warrior and mage are irrelevant," Mirko said stiffly. "Their opinions don’t matter."

"Still. Nice to be appreciated."

"Dillon." Elise’s voice could have frozen the room.

"I’m just saying." Dillon grinned. "Did you see Derek’s face? ’Dark magic!’ Like we’re in a story. I thought his Salamander would choke."

Elise didn’t smile, but she didn’t stop him either. "They’re rattled," she told Nathan. "They didn’t know about Mirko. That’s an advantage. They’ll waste energy trying to figure out what else we’re hiding."

"They should be," Nathan said quietly. He glanced at Kuro. She hadn’t moved or spoken, just watched.

’The Berserker noticed me,’ Kuro sent through the link. ’He studied me too long.’

’He’s observant. That could be trouble.’

’Or opportunity. He dismissed me as a curiosity. That’s a mistake.’

Nathan almost smiled. "We’re still in this," he said aloud. "Floor 10 is the real fight. Everything before is just the lead-up—Kade said it himself." He looked at his party: Garrett, steady and loyal. Dillon, grinning despite the tension. Elise, calm as winter. Mirko, proud and fierce. Kuro, silent and sure.

"Then let’s show them our approach is better," Elise said.

Nathan nodded. He stepped through the portal. His party followed.

The silver light swallowed them.
