Chapter 16: 16. Outstanding Performance
It was finally over.
One by one, surviving students vanished from the Tutorial Realm in flashes of extraction light, reappearing back inside the massive examination arena amidst roaring spectators, flashing cameras, and blinding stadium lights.
Nathan materialized near the center seating zone with aching muscles as a medical staff member shoved a healing potion into his hand before immediately rushing toward another injured participant.
He uncorked the bottle and drank deeply, warmth spread through his battered body almost instantly. The broken, bruised agony that had dominated his senses since the Berserk Ape fight began dulling into something more manageable.
Then Nathan noticed the silence, Or rather... The very specific silence directed toward him.
His brows rose slightly as everywhere he looked, students were staring. Some whispered, Some looked outright offended while Others simply looked confused.
Because somehow... Against all expectations... against all logic... the academy’s infamous "Bunny Summoner" had defeated the Boss Monster Berserk Ape.
Nathan sighed inwardly. ’Great, Attention that I don’t need right now’
Then a familiar voice suddenly exploded across the arena.
"BUNNY KING!!"
Nathan barely had time to glance sideways before Derek stormed toward him with Reid and Tyler following several steps behind like obedient bodyguards or lapdogs.
Derek reached him in seconds and grabbed Nathan by the collar, yanking him upward from his seated position.
"How did you do it, you cheat!?"
The movement tugged painfully against Nathan’s still-healing injuries.
He winced slightly but otherwise remained perfectly calm.
"Hah."
A small smirk tugged across his face. "Some people just have more to offer than their parents’ money, Derek"
Derek’s expression twisted immediately.
Nathan watched the emotional damage register in real time. Then Without another word, Derek shoved him backward.
Nathan dropped roughly back onto the bench.
"I... I don’t know how you did it" Derek snapped while pointing accusingly at him, "but I swear I’m getting my parents to investigate this! And when they find out what you did, you’ll be sorry, you cheating bastard!"
Nathan simply leaned back. "Sure."
Derek puffed angrily then turned sharply and marched away while Reid and Tyler hurried after him.
Nathan watched them go.
Honestly... the guy almost felt cartoonishly dedicated to being an antagonist.
Across another section of the arena, Elise observed the interaction quietly beside her party members.
Dillon stood beside her with folded arms, watching Nathan with obvious curiosity.
"Huh..." He raised an eyebrow.
"So that’s the famous Bunny King from your academy."
His gaze lingered thoughtfully on Nathan.
"He honestly doesn’t look like much. I really wonder how he pulled it off."
"I’m telling you, Dillon, he definitely cheated!" the female Priest beside him said immediately.
Desire was her name, She practically sounded relieved by the explanation that she herself just gave.
"No way an F-Grade aptitude student clears the Berserk Ape legitimately."
"Whatever..." Elise replied flatly.
Her eyes remained on Nathan as she had originally considered walking over to question him herself. But... that wasn’t really her.
Besides... There was something bothering her, but Before the thought could develop further, Headmaster Wilhelm’s amplified voice thundered across the arena.
"STUDENTS!"
The entire stadium snapped toward him instantly.
High above the arena floated the Headmaster atop his massive translucent jellyfish summon, the creature pulsing softly beneath him like a living aurora.
"CONGRATULATIONS!"
Cheers exploded from the students.
Wilhelm grinned broadly.
"From this moment onward... all of you who exceeded five hundred points..."
He paused dramatically.
"...ARE OFFICIALLY REGISTERED CLIMBERS!"
The arena erupted.
Students shouted, Some cried, Others hugged teammates or raised weapons triumphantly into the air. ƒreewebɳovel.com
Wilhelm allowed the celebration to continue briefly before raising a hand.
"I look forward to hearing stories of your future tower explorations. Trust me..." he said with a knowing smile. "I already know your climbs will be more enriching than mine ever was."
A ripple of laughter spread through students and faculty alike, as though everyone understood some long-running insider joke Nathan wasn’t privy to.
The Headmaster continued.
"You have spent years within the academy preparing for this moment. Just as there was a leaderboard inside the Tutorial Realm..."
A massive ranking display materialized above the arena.
"...there exists a generational ranking system within Babel itself. And beyond that..."
His smile sharpened slightly.
"...a ranking that encompasses all active Climbers."
Murmurs spread through the students.
"Always aim for the Top 100 if you desire greater opportunities... greater recognition... and better rewards from Babel."
Then Wilhelm’s expression shifted.
"And finally..." freewёbnoνel.com
The arena quieted.
"For the student..." He paused deliberately.
"...or rather..." a grin crossed his face.
"STUDENT... who successfully defeated the Boss Monster Berserk Ape."
Nathan felt every pair of eyes in the stadium turn toward him.
"Step forward."
Nathan sighed quietly.
Then stood as the crowd instinctively parted around him as he walked toward the center.
Camera drones rotated immediately, broadcast lenses locked onto him, Giant display screens across the arena lit up with his face.
Nathan suppressed a grimace.
Fortunately... Nobody knew how he had defeated the Berserk Ape. The outside world could only track points and ranking movement.
No one had witnessed Mirko’s evolution.
No one knew about the Bunny Girl System.
Good, He’d like to keep it that way.
"You," Wilhelm announced proudly as he descended slightly from atop his giant jellyfish summon, "are, by every measurable standard, the most outstanding student of this examination batch based on your achievement."
His voice echoed across the arena.
"Master Nathan Cross."
The crowd reacted immediately.
Cheers, Shock, Whispers, Disbelief.
Nathan resisted the urge to awkwardly wave.
"Your reward," Wilhelm continued, "will be an A-Grade item of your choosing."
Nathan’s eyes widened slightly.
A-grade? Okay.
That was actually insane.
"You will report to the Grandmaster of Smithing within the Tower Climbing Association(TCA) before your official climb deployment."
Wilhelm smiled warmly.
"And once again... congratulations, Master Nathan."
He turned toward the crowd.
"And to all of you..."
His voice boomed.
"GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FIRST CLIMB!"
The arena exploded.
Cheers thundered.
Fireworks burst overhead in brilliant colors while spectators roared from every direction.
Nathan stood amidst it all feeling oddly detached.
In his past life... He had known internet fame. Streaming fame. Fitness fame. Attention. But this... This felt different. More dangerous. Much more dangerous.
---
Later that evening... home felt wonderfully ordinary.
Lucy sat cross-legged on the floor happily squeezing Mirko who was currently back in her harmless bunny form and against Lucy’s chest while giggling uncontrollably.
Nathan had already learned something important.
Mirko could freely alternate between bunny form and humanoid beastgirl form after evolution.
It seemed it would be Useful.
Also... absolutely not information he intended to casually reveal to Lucy tonight.
One existential crisis at a time.
"She’s sooo fluffy!" Lucy declared happily.
’Master...’
Mirko’s mental voice echoed dryly inside Nathan’s mind.
’Your sister is trying to crush me within her chest!’
Nathan snorted quietly. ’You survived a raid boss, you can survive affection’
Mirko grumbled mentally.
Nathan leaned back at the table and focused on the glowing status panel hovering before him.
The Boss Monster fight had rewarded an absurd amount of experience.
Enough to completely blast through multiple levels, and because he had crossed the first 10 levels threshold he was awarded a new Archer class skill.
His eyes skimmed across the updated information.
