Chapter 378: 378. Where she belongs
Once inside Secretary Kim’s house, the apartment was pitch black. I switched on the torch I’d brought and handed it to her. I made her hold the light steady while I set to work replacing the shattered bulb.
I used her coffee table as a makeshift ladder. While I worked, I stole a glance down at her. She looked small, clutching my flashlight with a terrified expression as she provided my illumination. From my vantage point, I couldn’t help but notice the plunging neckline of her loose top and it was clear as day she wasn’t wearing a bra. Goddess, she was a hottie. For a woman who spent her days acting like a high-and-dry ice queen at the office, she looked remarkably fragile when the lights went out.
Not wanting to come off as a creep, I averted my eyes. Staring would be amateur. I fixed the bulb in silence, hopped down, and dusted off my hands.
"Try the switch, Ma’am."
She nodded, keeping the torch trained on the wall as she clicked the switch. The room flooded with warm light. For a fleeting second, a small, relieved smile played on her lips. It was almost cute until it was instantly replaced by her trademark arrogance.
"Now, clean up these shards!" she barked, gesturing at the floor. "I don’t want to be stabbed by glass. I’m far too delicate for that."
I didn’t let my annoyance show. I simply cleaned the floor without a word, my expression a mask of subservience. When I finished, I stood before her. She was already back on the sofa, dismissively scrolling through her phone.
"Ma’am," I said, pitching my voice to sound slightly desperate. "Could I... have your number?"
She froze. Then, she looked at me as if I were a cockroach that had just learned to speak. "Excuse me?"
"Your number. Just in case—"
Smack!
With a sharp flick of her wrist, she slapped the device away. It flew across the room, hitting the wall with a sickening thud. "Are you delusional? Do you actually think a bottom-feeder like you is in the same stratosphere as me?"
I looked at my phone on the floor, then back at her. "I was only thinking of the maintenance—"
"Listen to me, boy," she hissed, standing up to tower over me in her heels. "Only real men get my contact. Men who can spend your entire annual salary on a single bottle of wine. You? You’re just the help, a measly busboy. Now get out before I have you fired for harassment."
’Ah, women and money,’ I thought. ’An unbreakable bond.’
I remained silent, letting her vent a thousand reasons why my request was an insult to her very existence. I walked over and retrieved my phone. It wasn’t even scratched—the legendary durability of a Samsung never disappointed.
Once she finished her tirade, I let out a quiet sigh. "I understand," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "I just thought since the wiring in this building is... unpredictable... you might need a direct line. But if you’re confident in the dark, I’ll leave."
She hesitated. Her fear of the darkness clearly outweighed her pride. "Fine! Give me the damn number."
I watched her thumbs fly across the screen. She didn’t even hide it: she saved my name as [Trash].
"There. Now vanish," she sneered.
I walked out to the sound of her clicking her tongue in irritation.
I hadn’t been out the door for two minutes when I snapped my fingers. Inside the apartment, the new light bulb imploded. A faint scream echoed through the corridor. I quickened my pace, stifling the devilish laughter bubbling in my throat so the other tenants wouldn’t hear. freёwebnovel.com
When I reached the stairwell, the punks who had been smoking there earlier were gone. As I started down, my foot hit something slick. The stairs had been oiled.
Instead of tumbling, I executed a flawless backflip and landed perfectly on the ground below. I spotted the boys hiding behind some decorative hedges, looking absolutely stunned, their cigarettes falling from their mouths in shock. I ignored them completely, heading for my room. Behind me, I heard them scrambling back to their apartments, terrified by my moves.
"Idiots," I muttered.
Before I could even reach for my doorknob, my phone vibrated. I let it ring for a few beats before answering.
"Hello?"
"You! You useless brat!" Kim’s voice was hysterical. "The bulb exploded! It almost hit me! Get back here this instant!"
"What was that, Kim?" I asked casually.
"That’s Secretary Kim to you! Are you deaf? If you aren’t back here in three minutes, I’ll make sure you’re begging for scraps on the street!"
I held back a laugh. This was the moment I’d been waiting for: the perfect intersection of magic and technology.
I activated my Mnemomancy skill. Over the digital connection, I began to sift through her memory threads without her even realizing it. Her secrets, her hidden thoughts, her private shames—it all flowed into my mind like sweet nectar. Using Mnemomancy over a phone call was effortless, faster and smoother than physical contact.
Once I had what I needed, I spoke nonchalantly. "What was that? Come again!"
I could hear her groaning in anger. "I said get your useless ass back here and fix this, or I’m filing a report that you’re incompetent!"
"Filing a report to whom?" I asked, my voice low and haunting. "The CEO you’ve been sucking off in hopes of a promotion to Division Manager? I wonder what Manager Karen would say if she knew you were stabbing her in the back? Or better yet, the CEO’s wife. I hear she likes to skin people alive."
The screaming stopped instantly. I could hear her ragged, terrified breathing.
"How... how do you know that?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Who are you?"
Then she clicked her tongue just as quickly. "You little shit... get over here! You’re going to explain exactly where you heard those lies!"
"Oh, the tables have turned, now." I said, a dark satisfaction curling in my chest. "If you want to keep those secrets buried, you don’t demand things from me anymore. You ask. Politely. You come to me. Not the other way around."
"What?! How dare you—"
I hung up before she could shout or speak any more. I stepped into my room and sat on the bed, watching the phone light up again immediately. This time, I didn’t pick up.
Let her sit in the dark for a while. It’s where she belongs.
