Chapter 54: Chapter 54: This Tastes Great, That Tastes Great Too

Ding Ning spoke earnestly to the Blood Slaughter Couple, expressing her gratitude, because she knew very well that Jiang Che wasn’t actually Blood Slaughter’s son.

Maybe, just like her, they too were drawn by the feeling Jiang Che brought with him, by a twist of fate.

Supernatural spirits aren’t devoid of emotion; they just can’t perceive emotional interactions among their own kind.

But they can sense human emotions.

Ever since the strange apparition descended, all the humans they encountered—just a single glance, and the fear bubbling up in their hearts was impossible to hide.

All species—even between humans—cannot coexist where there is fear.

It’s like how humans fear murderers and despise those animals that bare their teeth and claws at them.

Between humans and evil spirits, there’s an irreconcilable contradiction: ordinary humans fear evil spirits, but after learning that killing an evil spirit lets you acquire its skill, beneath their fear lies uncontrollable greed and a murderous intent fiercer than any evil spirit.

At first, when they sensed this idea, the evil spirits found it unbelievable.

Those ant-like humans who would tremble in terror from just a look—could they really harbor murderous intent stronger than their fear?

Even if an evil spirit was willing to offer a skill, humans wouldn’t trust them; accepting such a skill could mean being controlled.

Eventually, both humans and evil spirits came to understand that neither side could ever be reconciled, that coexistence was impossible forever.

So when Blood Slaughter realized there was no trace of impurity in Jiang Che’s feelings toward them, it was hard not to become addicted to this unfamiliar emotion.

If fear is just a meal, something to eat or not eat, then this kind of happiness—never before experienced—is like an unbreakable addiction.

Blood Slaughter admitted that, at first, when he had Jiang Che eat that meat mash soup, he truly had intentions of tormenting him.

But that feeling vanished completely after Jiang Che ate it all with contentment.

This human really doesn’t have a single ill intention.

"No need to thank us."

"He calls me Father. It’s our duty to care for our son." Blood Slaughter waved his hand. His kindness to Jiang Che wasn’t because Jiang Che had made the Lord his wife.

The group sat down around the dining table.

"Let’s eat first."

At the rectangular table, Jiang Che and Ding Ning sat on one side, Tuantuan took a side seat, and the Blood Slaughter Couple sat across from Jiang Che and Ding Ning.

"I didn’t know what you liked, so I prepared a bit of everything." He pointed at the food on the table—even though it was all instant food, the spread was rich and varied.

Looking at the dishes, Blood Slaughter and the others had a hint of anticipation in their eyes.

This was their first time eating human food.

They’d never tried human food before; their former diet of blood was less efficient for growth than consuming fear, but it was too wasteful to give up entirely.

Jiang Che stared at the food in front of him—he couldn’t say what he liked.

Truthfully, the food was unfamiliar not just to the evil spirits, but even to Jiang Che himself.

In the mental hospital, year after year, he’d eaten the same monotonous meals.

The foods now on the table were things he’d never seen; he couldn’t even name them.

Sensing Jiang Che’s confusion, Blood Slaughter’s first reaction was that the fatty had lied to him, though he knew that guy wouldn’t dare.

As everyone started eating, Jiang Che picked up his chopsticks and took a piece of food.

He opened his mouth and bit down—the exquisite flavor exploded in his mouth.

Surprise, delight, and a sense of happiness spread from his tongue to his brain, igniting inside his mind. It was the ultimate joy brought by his taste buds.

"This is so good! I’ve never eaten anything this delicious before."

Jiang Che picked up a bite for each person; the dish closest to him tasted so amazing, he couldn’t bear to take a second bite himself.

But when serving food to Ding Ning and the others, he felt no hesitation.

After distributing his own dish among the group, Jiang Che calmly moved on to taste other dishes.

With another bite, Jiang Che’s eyes sparkled.

So delicious!

He sat there stunned. "This one’s good too." As he said this, he reached over to serve Blood Slaughter and the others.

"Why not try some of the others?" Blood Slaughter laughed. Before, they’d never trusted the emotions on a human’s face; humans could disguise too well.

They only believed what they themselves could sense.

But with Jiang Che, inner feelings matched outward expressions.

Jiang Che looked at the other untouched dishes in front of him, his fingers trembling as he tried a bite of each.

His bowl unwittingly piled up like a small mountain, but Jiang Che kept his head down, eating steadily—each bite came quickly, barely chewed, and his body trembled as he ate.

"Wait, why are you crying?" Blood Slaughter saw the mix of sadness and happiness in Jiang Che’s emotions and became worried.

Could it really be that damned fat guy tricked him?

Wasn’t he happy when he first started eating?

Jiang Che’s mouth was stuffed full of food; he chewed hard, struggling to swallow it all.

This was definitely the most delicious meal he’d ever had—even with all the flavors mixed together, it was still enchanting.

"No, it’s just so tasty." Jiang Che swallowed everything in his throat and couldn’t help wiping tears from the corners of his eyes.

Blood Slaughter’s first instinct was disbelief.

When Jiang Che first came to the house, he’d said the food was good, but eating the meat mush didn’t bring him the happiness or excitement he now showed upon tasting these delicacies.

Now, he’s crying with sadness and claiming it’s good.

What a liar this human is.

But Tuantuan could genuinely feel Jiang Che’s heart; he truly thought this food was delicious.

The tears were simply from overwhelming joy.

The Blood Slaughter Couple tried a few bites, not quite believing it—before, they only ate blood, and now all human food tasted more or less the same to them.

Tuantuan also tried some—she couldn’t detect any flavor either.

Ding Ning sampled a bit, and aside from differences in texture, she couldn’t tell any difference in taste.

Seeing Blood Slaughter and the others unmoved by the food, Ding Ning mentally prepared herself.

Evil spirits were indifferent to human food.

She perceived Jiang Che’s restraint with the delicious food, helping him serve the dishes he couldn’t bear to eat by himself.

But Jiang Che didn’t eat much; seeing the food dwindle, he refused to take another bite, insisting he was full.

His thinking was simple: good food must be shared with family.

Ding Ning stared at the dishes before her; she felt nothing for them.

But she could sense Jiang Che’s emotions, and through Tuantuan, could almost read his thoughts.

"I’ve never tasted anything so good."

"I’ve never seen this before."

"So delicious..."

...

Her heart ached; she’d just found out that Jiang Che was treated as an outcast even among humans.

Jiang Che surely didn’t know that the delicious food he’d never tasted was nothing but the ordinary fare those humans brought into the Dungeon.

Instant food can’t beat freshly cooked meals, and the instant options brought to the Dungeon were simply the best available under the circumstances.

"I’ll cook for you, even more delicious food, okay?" For the first time, Ding Ning felt the urge to cook.

Jiang Che nodded vigorously, "Okay!"

At this point, they had no idea what kind of taste catastrophe it would be for a human to eat food cooked by a flavorless evil spirit.
