Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Luck Has Triumphed Over All Capital
Do you like Daddy too?
Hearing Tuantuan’s question, Ding Ning sat on a rock, resting her chin in both hands.
She quietly watched the boy digging a grave ahead. He first moved Ya’s severed limbs and body to a hidden spot, then started looking for a patch of earth and began shoveling the dirt.
He worked very seriously, glancing at Tuantuan and Ding Ning from time to time.
As Jiang Che dug, his gaze occasionally landed on Ya’s ’corpse’.
"Thank you," Jiang Che looked at her breathless body.
"I never thought, when I lent you my clothes back then, you’d return so much goodwill."
"It’s just a pity this is one of those Dungeons or whatever, I don’t even know how to get back. Otherwise, I’d take you with me." Jiang Che talked quietly to Ya as he dug.
Ever since that little nurse told him families could be found in dungeons, he’d heard nothing further about the hospital after entering this place.
He’d thought about going back, like taking his family to see where he lived, but he didn’t even know how he got here.
That thought always vanished in a heartbeat. Being with his family was more reassuring than anything else.
Go back...?
Honestly, he was afraid inside; if going back meant being separated from his family again, he didn’t want to go.
Ya actually wasn’t dead yet, there was still a sliver of breath keeping her alive. Her streaming room still existed—which meant her life hadn’t completely faded.
Ya’s body couldn’t move, her eyes barely open, unable either to open them or to close them all the way.
She just quietly watched the two evil spirits directing Jiang Che to dig a grave for her burial.
In Jiang Che’s eyes, Ya’s face was ashen, blood soaking her whole body, her unclosed eyes leaving him with some guilt in his heart.
There were now very few viewers left in Ya’s streaming room,
Her fate was pretty much sealed—no one wanted to linger here any longer.
After all, people watched to learn skills, key points, survival tactics in the dungeons—not to witness someone’s death.
What’s more, her and Jiang Che’s camera feeds overlapped a lot now,
It was more convenient just to watch Jiang Che.
[I feel like there’s not much to learn from Jiang Che anymore, but I just can’t leave.]
[What do you mean no skills? Playing it safe isn’t a skill?]
[Honestly, I DID learn a lot from Jiang Che, but I just don’t dare try it myself.]
[If Jiang Che weren’t in Dungeon 9, would this luck have gotten him out alive?]
[I still liked that survivor trio before, now that was real skill.]
[That final move to fix the team conflict was awesome. That woman deserved her spot on the team.]
...
"I’ve never felt this way before," Ding Ning answered Tuantuan’s question.
She didn’t know if it was ’like’—she just thought this human was really special.
"Madam... Mom, there are plenty of survivors, can’t you... let him go..." Tuantuan crouched next to Ding Ning, whispering.
Ding Ning fell silent for a long time. "You know, each Dungeon is anchored by a Lord, and you all... basically count as my subjects."
Fear could fuel the growth of evil spirits, but after human flesh and blood faded into the Dungeon, it became the foundation holding up the Dungeon’s strength.
Letting one or two people go didn’t affect a Dungeon much, but as these top Lords, just a little difference in human flesh and blood could show a difference between them.
Tuantuan glanced over at Jiang Che, then resolutely turned back to look at Ding Ning.
"Mo... Mom, when the Hunting Ground arrives, I’ll fight for you." Tuantuan pressed her right hand to her brow—this was the evil spirits’ highest loyalty ritual, revealing their most vulnerable point to the Lord they swear fealty to.
There were many Dungeons, each a domain watched over by multiple Lords.
Every Lord had countless evil spirits of varying strength. Whenever the Hunting Ground descended, not all evil spirits were willing to go to the Human Realm.
After all, the Human Realm was ripe for the taking, but it was also easy to be besieged there.
Humans entering Dungeons did so through delimited zones—only those in the designated area could be forced in.
Anyone outside, during Dungeon closure, could only watch.
The Hunting Ground was different—even though it was also a one-way trip, humans could actively choose whether to enter a specific Hunting Ground.
Those who’d gained skills or had special Dungeon items would now form teams to cooperate.
The Hunting Ground—
Evil spirits hunting humans, humans hunting evil spirits.
For both sides, when the Hunt descended, a successful run meant great rewards.
Ding Ning said nothing; she only watched Jiang Che quietly.
Jiang Che dug the grave very deep. Maybe he thought the heat here was stifling, or maybe he wanted to bury Ya deeper so she wouldn’t suffer so much after death.
"Hey, look what I’ve dug up!" Suddenly Jiang Che found a light shining at his feet. An icy blue radiance suddenly shot out and projected itself onto a door.
He climbed out of the waist-deep pit, staring at the door shimmering with that icy, frigid glow.
"What is this thing? Tuantuan, you guys, don’t come over yet." Jiang Che watched the thing warily in front of him.
Its appearance was too strange. When that light landed on the ruined doorway in front of him, even the environment around seemed to become crystal clear.
Tuantuan looked in surprise at the icy blue light. When the radiance morphed across the ruined gate, she lowered her head and couldn’t help wiping her eyes. "Thank you."
She knew—this was the Dungeon’s exit.
At the same time, the Crystal Ball in Ding Ning’s hand disappeared.
The exit for Dungeon 9 had never been fixed anywhere, but always existed in Ding Ning’s hand as the Crystal Ball.
Once touched, you could leave.
"What are you talking about? Didn’t he dig this up himself?" Ding Ning didn’t acknowledge Tuantuan’s gratitude.
As Jiang Che unearthed that light, every survivor still hanging on in Dungeon 9 heard a voice in their minds at the same instant.
[Dungeon 9’s exit has opened. Survivors, please head there to escape.]
This notification also appeared in the live stream.
Everyone stared in shock at Jiang Che, seeing him reach out experimentally to touch the Light Gate before him.
[WTF? Seriously, dumb luck saves the dumbest? Dungeon 9, absolute despair! The exit just gets dug up like this?]
[The two evil spirits haven’t even reacted yet. As long as Jiang Che touches it, he can leave—the others coming behind might not be so lucky.]
[Unreal. Why don’t I have luck like this?]
[Today, luck beats all the odds.]
...
Everyone watched Jiang Che’s hand nervously as his tentative right hand reached for the icy blue radiance.
Faster!
