Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Dark Forest Law
As soon as those words were spoken, the car shuddered for a second.
Jiang Che also asked in puzzlement, "Why?"
Though he’d only been out for a few days, during these few days, every bit of news he’d received blamed every atrocity on the evil spirits, saying all the deeds were done by them.
"I don’t know. Mom actually wanted to come too, but yesterday all the dungeon Lords were summoned by the main Lords to discuss this matter." Tuantuan didn’t treat Jiang Che as an outsider, sharing everything she knew.
Xiong Jie slammed the brakes, pulling the car over to the roadside.
"You mean the change in the arrival time wasn’t your doing?" A bold idea flashed in his heart, but he didn’t dare to think further.
"Of course not. Why would we do something like that?" Tuantuan replied with utter sincerity.
"The Human Realm isn’t really somewhere we can survive. Killing humans doesn’t help us grow. Sure, those emotions of fear help a bit, but that’s not our main growth route."
"And when there aren’t any humans in the dungeons, we still need to evolve, right?" Tuantuan spread her hands.
"Then why do you descend on the dungeons, drag humans in, and massacre them?" Xiong Jie gripped the steering wheel, voicing the question that haunted him most.
He really was greedy for life and afraid of death, which is why he’d always tried to lie low and survive.
If it was possible, he wouldn’t have risked his life just to chase the initial Tier Two Peak experience.
If not for his fear of death, he wouldn’t have chosen to serve the evil spirits as his Lords.
"It’s not us!" Tuantuan huffed, swinging her little fists. "Human life is on such a low level. Doing these things, what’s the point?"
"No, none of this makes sense!" Xiong Jie felt his brain short-circuit; all the information was at war inside his head.
From the moment the horror descended, every piece of information he’d gotten said the evil spirits invaded the Human Realm, dragged people into the dungeons, killing at will; they reveled in murder, while humans could only struggle to survive.
But now, an evil spirit actually told him they’d never done any of that?
"What’s wrong about it?" Jiang Che was a bit confused. He, like most people, was rather numb to it all. Honestly, the happiest thing since the dungeons appeared was finally reuniting with his family.
"These evil spirits love treating humanity like ants—killing them at will. And now they’re saying they never wanted to do that?"
"If human life is at a lower level, then what Tuantuan said is normal, isn’t it? Who’d want an anthill in their house, swarming with ants? Squashing them is normal, right?"
Xiong Jie paused; Jiang Che’s words struck his mind like a thunderclap on a sunny day.
He suddenly realized that the perspective the live streams and all the big platforms had been pumping into people was crumbling before his eyes.
He believed humanity’s survival strategy had always been the Dark Forest Law: when you find another higher lifeform, your only move is to hide, never let yourself be discovered.
But if...if you had a way to hold your own against the other side, then what?
Xiong Jie already had an answer forming in his heart.
Invasion!
If humanity found a way to overcome the evil spirits, they’d invade with all their might: escape the dungeons to level up, then slay, and slaying would grant them skills.
And would the other side willingly let ants dig holes in their territory, steal their stuff, and eventually turn on them and kill them?
No, never.
Xiong Jie took a deep breath.
Now he couldn’t be sure—between humans and evil spirits, who would be the final victors?
In fact, he realized he couldn’t take Tuantuan’s words at face value.
What if this was all part of some evil spirit plan to exterminate humanity?
"Cheng." Xiong Jie didn’t start the engine. He just looked at Jiang Che, then at the Tuantuan next to him.
"What if, in this whole fight, the evil spirits were actually the weak side?" He voiced the suspicion in his heart.
"Hmph! No way! I’d beat those people to a pulp!" Tuantuan swung her fists, showing off her threat.
Xiong Jie had always thought that by siding with the evil spirits, he could scrape by and become a survivor in the end.
But now, he realized he might already be on the losing side.
It wasn’t that he looked down on the evil spirits’ power, it was just that he knew humans, when under this kind of pressure, could bounce back unbelievably hard.
The harder you press, the fiercer the rebound.
Especially when everyone was convinced it was the evil spirits who had destroyed their homes, killed their loved ones, ruined it all.
The moment humans seized power, would be the moment the evil spirits went extinct.
"What if one day, humans really do have the power to wipe out all evil spirits?" Xiong Jie was lost. He’d thought sticking with the strong would let him survive to the end.
"Then—then I’ll build a society where humans and evil spirits can live in harmony!" Jiang Che clenched his fist, swearing with conviction!
"If I can, I want everyone to be well, together." Jiang Che took Tuantuan’s hand.
Xiong Jie started the engine again, headlights cutting through the gloom toward the city.
The full moon hung overhead, and in a villa, a security guard gazed up at the giant moon above.
"So quiet. Looks like no evil spirits dare mess with us this time."
"I wonder if those two out there are okay. But honestly, I haven’t sensed any energy flares outside."
"This is hands down the calmest horror descent I’ve been through. Honestly, I wish a couple evil spirits would show up so I could get in some practice."
Everyone in the villa was chatting and joking; only Feihu was holed up in his room, sunk in endless terror.
Compared to the wilds, the city was far rowdier.
Shouts and howls echoed everywhere, one car crash after another on the roads, the windows smeared red with blood.
Jiang Che was briefly stunned. He’d wanted to take Tuantuan into the city for some street food, but this was what greeted him instead.
Xiong Jie hesitated, "Maybe I should just take you to the amusement park. There shouldn’t be anyone there—everyone’s hiding out."
With enough warning, everyone had moved to defend the safest places; there were almost no people at the rides anymore.
Xiong Jie glanced at the Tuantuan beside Jiang Che. He felt like Tuantuan’s face had softened a lot—compared to their first meeting, now she was more like a pure, innocent human child.
"You three! What are you doing on the street! Get inside! The strong ones will be here soon!" A voice called from a window above them, probably talking to Jiang Che and the others.
Jiang Che looked up. It was a middle-aged woman, anxiously leaning from her window, yelling down while warily scanning the area.
"We’ll go right away! We’re leaving!" Xiong Jie tugged Jiang Che toward the car.
But Jiang Che saw a dark shadow lunge at the woman who’d spoken to them.
"Earth Escape!" Jiang Che yelled in shock, and the building the woman was in started sinking rapidly!
