Chapter 80: That should be me...
Chloe paid a visit to the mall that Thursday since she was free. As usual, everyone began to act like they were very busy immediately they saw her. They knew their female boss was a cold and heartless person and wouldn’t waste time to fire them if they messed up.
"I think the boss is in a bad mood. You better not get into trouble." A male staff whispered to a female staff.
"Even when she is not in a bad mood she is scary, I wonder what is going to happen when she is in a bad mood." The lady whispered back to him.
"If you are both going to keep talking instead of working then get out!" Chloe said angrily from behind them.
They both jumped in shock, having not expected to see her there before running off.
Chloe went around the mall checking to make sure all was in order. Almost all of the shoppers didn’t know she owned the mall so she continued to breeze by as she observed everywhere.
Her face formed a frown when she saw a familiar figure stacking some drinks in a rack..
She looked at him in confusion.
He was wearing the staff tee shirt but this was the first time she was seeing him there.
As if he knew someone was watching, Jeremy turned his head to look at her and froze when he saw her standing there.
"Chloe?" He called out in surprise as he stood up from where he had been squatting.
Some staff who were around looked at them in shock. The new part-time employee just called the boss by her name? How did he know her? They wondered as they tried to be discreet as they watched.
"You came to shop?" He asked as he looked around her. There was no cart nor basket in her hand.
"What are you doing?" She asked in her usual flat tone before thinking it was best to be polite to him. He had helped her back in school when David tried to harass herself and Mia plus she had promised to stop by the school infirmary to see him but she hadn’t.
"Oh.. I work here. Part-time." He said to her with a smile.
Chloe nodded. She didn’t know what else to say to him and was about leaving when he called after her...
"I could be your shopping assistant. I know where everything is." He offered. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
He didn’t want to miss the opportunity to be close to her. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and he wasn’t sure he would be able to bump into her again.
She turned around to look at him in amusement.
"When did you start working here?"
"Two days ago." He answered immediately.
It was no wonder he didn’t know who she was. She thought to herself.
"Thanks, but I can shop myself." She turned to leave but paused and turned to look at him again... freewёbnoνel.com
"And thanks again for the other day..."
She could see Jeremy’s cheeks and ears redden as a smile creeped up his face.
’He likes me’ She thought and shook her head pitifully at him.
"Can I get your number?" He asked as he extended his phone to her.
Once again, the staffs around gasped.
"My number?" She asked in surprise.
He was the only young man who had been bold enough to ask for her number and the most surprising thing, it didn’t seem like he was from a wealthy family.
She looked at him wearily before taking the phone from him. She inputted her number and handed it back to him as he smiled.
"That’s it. But do not expect much." She said before walking away.
Jeremy looked at his phone in surprise. He finally had Chloe’s number? He smiled brightly and high-fived the air and when he turned to continue what he had been doing, he saw a lot of eyes staring at him and jumped in shock.
"Did you.... just ask for her number?" A young staff who looked to be around his age asked in obvious surprise.
"Yes.. why?"
"Do you know her?" A lady asked.
"Yes. She’s my classmate." He answered with a nod.
"Your classmate?" The five people asked him at the same time before looking him up and down.
"How come you attend the same school with her?" They were sure her school fees would be bloody expensive for ordinary people to afford..
Jeremy could guess where their confusion lied and nodded. "I’m there on a scholarship."
"You don’t look like the very smart type to have a scholarship in the kind of school the boss attends."
Jeremy chuckled but his laughed stopped abruptly when his brain registered what the young man had just said.
"Boss?" He asked him in confusion.
"Yes Boss... " They all nodded.
"Boss where?" He asked again in confusion.
"She own this place."
"No wonder he was openly flirting with her. He didn’t even know who she was."
"I was surprised she didn’t fire him at the spot"
"Tsk tsk.."
Jeremy stared in bewilderment as he listened to all of them talk.
***************
Leo would have been amused that Mia was embarrassed to look at him after the awkward moment, but he still kept a serious face. He didn’t know whether she was mad at him since she wasn’t saying anything..
"Mia?" He called her again.
This time, she turned to look at him. Her lips were pursed together and her eyes looked sad.
"Thank you... for last night." She said.
She didn’t know how her night would have been like if he hadn’t showed up. She didn’t know why he had been there at that time or what he had been doing there but she didn’t ask. She was grateful.
Leo sighed in relief. Her reaction was better than he expected.
He was really curious to ask her what had happened the previous night. Who those people where, why she followed them, why she cried like that... but he didn’t know whether it was right to ask her so he asked something else instead...
"Would you like to have anything?"
She was parched. Water. She needed water.
"Can I get a bottle of water?" She asked meekly.
"Give me a minute." He stood up and Mia turned her head to the side to avoid looking at him just in case his ’younger brother’ was still around.
Leo found her reaction amusing and looked down. Well, after everything, it had obviously relaxed. He quickly left the room and Mia sighed before she picked up her phone. She had left it in the room while hurrying out the previous night. When the screen lit up, two things surprised her. Firstly, it was already 10 O’clock. Secondly, she saw 34 missed calls and 5 messages.
She checked her call log, the last person to call was James. There were two missed calls from him, three from Mira, one from Jeremy, one from Mr B and twenty seven from Leo.
She exclaimed in her head before clicking on the messages.
There was a message from Jeremy asking if they could both meet up later today. Another one was from Mira asking why she wasn’t taking her calls.
Then there was one from James asking whether she was sleeping then he wished her a good night and said he would call her today. The other two were from Leo the previous night asking why she wasn’t answering her phone and begging her to answer.
She felt touched by it. It was surprising how someone she just met cared about her a lot.
Leo returned with the water and poured her some on a glass.
Mia gulped it down and asked him for more. She kept asking for more water till the bottle was empty and Leo looked at the bottle of water in surprise.
"How do you feel now?" He asked while still standing. He didn’t think it was right to sit on her bed now.
She shrugged her shoulders without answering and closed her eyes as thoughts began to wander in her head.
Leo looked at her sadly.
She looked weak. Really weak.
"What would you like to eat?" He asked her but she remained quiet.
"Mia?"
"I am not hungry" She said in a very low and weak voice.
Who would be hungry at this point?
"Mia you have to eat.. else you’ll be sick" He said to her in a pleading voice.
She was still quiet and after a few seconds past, she asked...
"Who do you love the most in this world?"
He hadn’t expected that question so he was a bit surprised.
He was quiet for about a minute before he answered...
"That should be me.. Leo King." He said.
Mia’s eyes shot open immediately and she turned her head to look at him.
She had expected him to say his mother or father or someone else’s name but just like her, he had mentioned his name first.
Leo wondered why she was staring at him like that. "Something wrong?" He asked her curiously.
"Why?" She asked him back. When she noticed the confused look on his face, she clarified herself.. "Why do you love yourself the most?"
He almost chuckled at her question before saying.
"Was I supposed to love someone else more than I love myself? What if the person doesn’t love me back? So who would love me for me?" He asked.
