Chapter 466: Chapter 271: The Impossible Mission of Certain Death (Part 2)
Of course, no one was asking Fang Zhen to take this risk, and he had no intention of doing so.
He wanted to help the Whig Society defend Lanxi City, but his primary goal was to complete his mission and achieve its objectives, not to play the hero.
While being in the limelight could be addictive, risking his life for it would be foolish.
The Whig Society was locked in an irreconcilable, life-or-death struggle with the Eternal Night Council. Fang Zhen wasn’t a member, and he had no obligation to shoulder that responsibility.
And of course, no one asked him to.
The members of the Whig Society understood this as well. If a sacrifice had to be made, one of their own would step forward, not Fang Zhen.
Fang Zhen, however, was considering another problem.
He had brought a drone relay station with him this time. ’I wonder if the relay could solve this problem.’
As Fang Zhen pondered, the members of the Whig Society remained silent.
After a long, heavy silence, a voice suddenly rang out. "I’ll go."
The voice was familiar to Fang Zhen. The moment it was heard, everyone’s eyes shot toward the speaker.
Fang Zhen looked over and was slightly surprised by who he saw.
It was Pat.
Pat seemed a bit uncomfortable under everyone’s gaze. He let out a goofy laugh and said,
"Don’t look at me like that. I know it’s a pretty simple task, just seeing if anyone is building a dam up there. If I see one, I’ll set off a signal flare. If not, then that’s that. It’s not complicated. Don’t worry about me being dumb, I can handle it."
"Pat, you idiot! We’re not talking about whether you can handle it!" Karen couldn’t help but exclaim.
Pat chuckled again. "Yeah, I know. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, and you all are always looking out for me. To be honest, sometimes I really can’t stand smart people like you, Karen."
"But, well... God made me this way for a reason, right? As long as I’m happy, that’s what matters."
"Right now, if Lanxi City really gets flooded like you all say, I don’t know what will happen next."
"But my friends are already dead... Old Terry, who was so good at cooking fish... Andy, who went fishing and hunting with me... and Quisen, my drinking buddy."
"If Lanxi City falls, everyone I know will die anyway. Since there’s no difference between dying sooner or later, why worry so much about it?"
"So just let me go. I’m just a fool, after all."
After a pause, Pat scratched his head and looked at Karen. "Karen, sometimes I really can’t stand you, but you’re only mean with your words. Deep down, you’re not a bad person."
Then he turned his head toward Laura. For some reason, his face suddenly flushed red. "Laura," he said, "there’s something I’ve never told you. You have big breasts and wide hips... you must be good at bearing children. Even when you’re older, you could probably have a lot of kids. It’s a shame..."
Pat’s face grew redder as he spoke, and he couldn’t go on. He quickly turned away, not daring to look at Laura.
Laura had a strange expression on her face after hearing his words, but as she looked at Pat, her eyes began to well up with tears.
It wasn’t just her. Even the ever-arrogant Karen’s eyes glistened with emotion, though he fought hard to keep the tears from falling.
"You idiot," Karen said softly.
But his tone no longer held its usual scorn and disdain. Instead, it was filled with the tragic sorrow of a comrade about to embark on a suicide mission.
Pat said nothing. He just grinned, revealing a set of white teeth in a brilliant smile. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
Alexander stared at Pat for a long time before finally letting out a heavy sigh.
"Pat, I never expected you would be the one to step forward at a time like this. I underestimated you. Your spirit is the true spirit of the Whig Society," Alexander said.
West was also deeply moved. He said nothing, simply walking to Pat’s side and clapping him on the shoulder.
A somber, heroic mood settled over the others. They watched Pat with a mixture of regret, admiration, and respect.
Pat laughed heartily. "I’m not dead yet! Don’t be like that. I’m actually pretty happy right now. This is probably the most respected I’ve ever been in my entire life."
Karen pressed his lips together, forcing back the tears in his eyes. He said nothing, walking up to Pat and thumping him on the chest twice before turning away, as if to hide his tears.
Watching from the side, Fang Zhen gained a newfound respect for Pat.
Just as a somber and heroic atmosphere settled over the city wall, Fang Zhen suddenly spoke up. "Actually, we can find out if those contaminated soldiers and the Eternal Night Council members are preparing a water attack upstream without anyone having to die."
"What?" At Fang Zhen’s words, the atmosphere shifted in an instant. All eyes immediately fixed on him.
Karen, who only moments ago had been overcome with tragic sorrow, whipped his head around.
He had somehow already wiped his eyes; they were just a little red now, with no tears to be seen.
Karen’s reaction was incredibly fast. He said, "That’s impossible, isn’t it? To scout it out, you have to leave the city. You’d have to face hundreds, if not thousands, of those things, and we can’t spare that many soldiers or Curse Sealers."
